It will not hit a savings figure you can predict in advance. The result depends on the footage, the encoder, and the quality setting, so the only reliable answer comes from a short test on your own files.
The first-person result in the headline is not backed by measurements in this article. The steps below show how to run the same check on your library and decide whether a drive is still needed.

What HandBrake changes when it encodes a video
HandBrake transcodes a video. It decodes the source and writes a new file using the codec, resolution, frame rate, and audio settings you choose. Presets bundle those choices for a use case. HandBrake’s official presets documentation calls the default Fast 1080p30 preset a starting point for broad compatibility, stating: “The default Fast 1080p30 preset is a good choice if you’re just getting started.”
A preset is not a universal compress button. Some presets cap the maximum resolution or frame rate, and some change how audio is handled. A smaller file may simply have fewer pixels or frames per second than the original, so check what the chosen preset alters before you encode anything.

How much space HandBrake will save
There is no fixed compression ratio. HandBrake’s documentation recommends constant quality for ordinary use. In that mode the encoder aims for a steady visual quality, so file size follows the content rather than a target. Two sources of the same length can produce very different output sizes. Grainy footage, fast motion, and fine detail usually need more data to preserve, so they shrink less. Footage that is already efficiently encoded may leave less room to shrink.
For this reason, a rule of thumb based only on duration, such as a set number of gigabytes per hour, is not reliable. Measure a representative sample from your own library.

Run a test encode before touching the library
- Record each file’s current size, resolution, and frame rate, along with the device or screen where you will watch it. Your operating system’s file properties or a media information tool can show resolution and frame rate.
- Open one source file in HandBrake. In the presets list, choose a preset close to your playback target. If you know the device, choose the matching device preset. If you do not, start with Fast 1080p30.
- Check what the preset changes: output resolution, frame rate, and audio tracks. If the output dimensions are lower than the source, decide whether that is acceptable for how you watch the video.
- Leave the video quality set to constant quality and use the preset’s default value for the first encode.
- Cut a short clip of one to three minutes that includes the hardest material: motion, fine detail, dark scenes, and grain. Encode only that clip.
- Compare the output with the source. If it is too large, or if quality looks worse than you need, adjust the quality value in small steps of one or two points and encode the clip again.
- When the clip is right, encode the full file and compare its size with the original. Only extrapolate to the whole library after you have tested several representative files, not just one.
Quality values by encoder
HandBrake’s “Adjusting quality” guidance lists starting ranges for each encoder. With x264, x265, and SVT-AV1, a lower value means higher quality and usually a larger file. Some other encoders use a reversed scale. Values are not comparable across encoders, so do not apply one number to every encoder. These ranges come from HandBrake’s current documentation, which changes between releases. Check the guidance for the version you have installed.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

When you have a strict file-size target
If a file must fit a specific size, Average Bitrate is the alternative to constant quality. It aims for an average data rate, which makes the output size more predictable. The cost is that quality varies between simple and complex scenes. Use it only when the size limit matters more than consistent quality.
Check the result before deleting anything
- Play the output on the device you intend to use, not only on the computer where you encoded it.
- Look at motion, faces, on-screen text, and dark or grainy areas, at the distance where you usually watch.
- Check audio sync, and confirm that every audio track you need survived.
- Confirm that the output duration matches the source.
- Keep the original files until you have played back every output you need.
Hardware encoding and speed
Hardware encoders can be much faster when your computer and graphics drivers support them. Availability varies by hardware and driver version, so check which encoders HandBrake offers on your machine instead of assuming a speedup. Speed, quality, and file size trade off in general: slower encoder settings usually spend more effort for the same quality, so faster encoding is not free.

Resolution limits and cropping
Resolution limits and cropping can reduce the frame size and remove black bars. Reducing a 4K video to 1080p is a visible change for the viewer, not just a smaller file. Auto-crop is a best guess. Preview the crop, and adjust it manually if it cuts into picture content.

Decide whether you still need a drive
After the test, estimate the library’s total size once it is encoded. If the result fits your current storage with room to spare, you may be able to skip the purchase for now.

If it still does not fit, a drive is a reasonable purchase. Treat it as added capacity, not as the only copy of anything irreplaceable. CISA’s data backup guidance describes the 3-2-1 approach: three copies of your data, on two types of media, with one copy offsite. The Library of Congress’s personal archiving guidance for video recommends keeping multiple copies of important videos in separate locations and checking them periodically to confirm they can still be read.
Quick Recap
- If the encoded library fits your working space, use the saved space and keep your originals until playback is verified.
- If it does not fit, size new storage for the encoded library plus expected growth.
- If the footage is irreplaceable, buy storage for a backup copy in a separate location, not only for extra space.
