Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →On a Tokyo-to-London flight approaching 16 hours, T3 reviewer Mike Lowe found Sonos Ace Ultra comfortable for long stretches, with effective adaptive noise cancelling and a useful wired connection to the seatback entertainment system. Those are one traveler’s impressions, not laboratory results: the review did not measure noise reduction, battery endurance or sound response under controlled conditions.
How the Sonos Ace Ultra handled a long flight
Lowe says he logged about 70 hours of air travel during the month of his review, including the Tokyo-to-London journey. He praised the headphones’ comfort over extended wear and reported a weight of 322 g. That weight is cited by T3; it is not shown in the Sonos product details referenced here.

The most specific noise-cancelling observation came after a nap. When Lowe put his glasses back on, changing the fit around the earcups, he heard the aircraft background diminish within seconds as Adaptive ANC adjusted. He described noise cancelling as a major strength, but this was a single in-flight observation, not a quantified test or a controlled comparison with rival headphones.
Battery life with ANC on
Sonos rates Ace Ultra for up to 35 hours of playback with ANC on at moderate volume. The company notes that actual battery life varies with use, settings and environmental conditions, so the maximum is not a promise of 35 hours for every traveler. Lowe tracked the remaining charge in the app during his extensive travel and found the estimate useful; the review does not provide an independent measured runtime.
#1 Best Overall
- HEADPHONES | Featuring Dolby Atmos.
- SPATIAL AUDIO | Enjoy an industry-leading Dolby Atmos experience with dynamic head tracking.
- LOSSLESS AUDIO | Stream lossless audio over Bluetooth or via USB-C.
- ACTIVE NOISE CANCELLATION | World-class ANC neutralizes external sounds for maximum immersion.
- ALL-DAY COMFORT | Bespoke fit with plush memory foam, soft vegan leather, and a design that suits all head shapes, hairstyles, and accessories.
Sonos also says a three-minute charge from 0% can provide up to three hours of playback. Treat that as a manufacturer specification, not a result independently verified by the flight review. The official product details list a USB-C-to-USB-C cable in the box.
Connecting to airplane seatback entertainment
The included USB-C-to-3.5-mm cable worked when Lowe plugged the headphones directly into a British Airways seatback entertainment system. His AirFly Pro adapter was uncharged and then did not work as expected, so the supplied cable proved the simpler option on that flight. The review establishes compatibility with the seatback system he used, not every airline’s hardware.
Rank #2
- INCREDIBLE SOUND: Custom acoustic platform delivers rich, balanced audio for music, calls and everyday listening.
- LOSSLESS AUDIO SUPPORT: USB-C lossless audio and sound profiles optimize music quality across devices and environments. Additional option to use the 3.5 mm cable for a standard analog experience.
- ACTIVE NOISE CANCELLING (ANC): block distractions at work, on flights or during your daily commute. Or use Transparency mode to let the sounds of your environment mix in with your music.
- SEAMLESS WIRELESS CONNECTIVITY: One-touch pairing with Apple & Android for easy switching across devices.
- SPATIAL AUDIO IMMERSION: Personalized dynamic head tracking, 360-degree sound for movies, music and immersive everyday listening.
Sonos lists both a USB-C-to-3.5-mm cable and a USB-C-to-USB-C cable as included accessories. A suitable 3.5-mm cable is therefore not a necessary extra purchase for the use described in the review.

Sound, fit and the case
Lowe’s sound assessment was positive: he praised detail and a prominent bass presentation, as well as the available EQ customization. These are subjective listening impressions. Sonos specifies a 40 mm driver, Adaptive EQ and a custom eight-band equalizer; none of those specifications independently establishes how the headphones will sound to every listener.
Rank #3
- NOISE CANCELLING HEADPHONES: Effortlessly combines noise cancellation technology with passive features so you can shut off the outside world, quiet distractions, and take music beyond the beat

- 2 LISTENING MODES: These wireless Bluetooth headphones feature Quiet and Aware Modes that let you toggle between full noise cancelling or full awareness of your surroundings for seamless sound control
- HIGH-FIDELITY AUDIO/EQ CONTROL: Supercharge your favorite tracks with high-fidelity audio and Adjustable EQ that puts you in control of the bass, mid-range, and treble for unmatched bold sound
- ALL DAY BATTERY LIFE: Bose QuietComfort wireless headphones provide up to 24 hours of battery on a single charge, plus a 15-minute charge via USB-C gives you up to 2.5 hours of additional play time
The travel case holds the folded headphones and has pockets for cables. Lowe’s main practical complaint was the zipper: he found it fiddly, liable to catch fabric, and said the case material marked up. That is a reported handling concern rather than evidence of long-term durability.

Is it a sensible choice for frequent flying?
The review offers a useful case for Ace Ultra as a premium travel headphone if long-wear comfort, adaptive noise cancelling and the option to plug into seatback audio matter to you. Its strongest flight-specific example is the ANC response after the fit changed around glasses; its wired example shows that the included cable worked on one British Airways system. Neither establishes how it will perform in every cabin or for every listener.
At $449 in the US at launch, the decision also depends on personal fit and sound preference. The available review does not provide a methodical head-to-head test against other premium travel headphones, so it cannot support a tested claim that Ace Ultra is better than competing models. When comparing options, consider cabin noise cancelling, comfort over many hours (including with glasses), ANC-on battery life, seatback connectivity, case handling, sound and EQ preferences, and your local price.
Headphone Linking is optional for travel
Sonos Headphone Linking is a home-system feature in Early Access. It requires a compatible Sonos speaker, Wi-Fi and setup through the Sonos app. It is separate from ordinary Bluetooth or wired listening, so it is not a prerequisite for using Ace Ultra on a flight.
