Kometa, the free, self-hosted tool formerly called Plex Meta Manager, can automate Plex collections, metadata, poster artwork and overlays. With a well-chosen configuration, it can give a Plex library a more curated, streaming-service-style look. But “overnight” describes a possible schedule, not a guaranteed finish time, and the visual result depends on the rules and artwork you choose.
What Kometa changes in a Plex library
Kometa applies rules you configure to your Plex libraries. It can create collections, customize titles and summaries, update artwork, and apply poster overlays. It also connects to sources such as TMDb and IMDb, and offers modular defaults that can help you get started. The project describes its aim as letting users “customize artwork, titles, summaries, and more to create a stunning library” (Kometa project).

That automation is not the same as an editor that knows what you like. Kometa follows configured collection builders and artwork rules; you decide which ones to use and whether their output suits your library. The Netflix comparison is therefore an aesthetic goal, not a measured product comparison.

Build collections around a browsing habit
Depending on the builders and data sources in your configuration, collections can group titles by themes such as genre, studio, actor, decade or trending lists. You can also configure collections associated with streaming services. Treat those as titles listed as available on a service only when the list source is current: availability changes, and a configured list is not a guarantee that a title remains on that service in your region.

Choose collections that solve a real discovery problem. A short list of useful rows—such as a genre you browse often or a studio collection—can be easier to scan than a large set of overlapping categories. Review the resulting collections in Plex and adjust the rules rather than assuming every default will fit.
Use consistent posters and overlays
Kometa can update artwork and apply overlays, such as visual labels placed on posters. Consistent artwork can make collections look more deliberate, while overlays can surface information at a glance. The result depends on the images and rules you select; the tool does not make every poster part of a single, guaranteed design.

How to set up Kometa and schedule a run
Kometa is not a one-click Plex setting. You install it locally or in Docker, prepare a configuration file, provide credentials or service URLs for the integrations you use, and select or create collection and overlay files. The project provides setup walkthroughs and configuration documentation (Kometa project and walkthroughs).

- Install Kometa: choose a supported local or Docker setup using the project’s walkthroughs.
- Prepare the configuration: identify your Plex libraries and add credentials or URLs for the integrations your chosen builders require.
- Choose what to build: enable a small set of collection and overlay files first, then review the rules and data sources behind them.
- Run and inspect: check the collections and posters in Plex before expanding the configuration.
- Set a schedule: configure the library run cadence in Kometa’s library settings; the documented default is
daily, and an example for a TV library isweekly(sunday)(Kometa library configuration).
A scheduled start is not a promised completion time. Kometa’s documentation describes scheduling, not a guaranteed runtime. How long a run takes depends on factors including library size, selected builders, poster work, network access and the machine running it. Plex’s own scheduled maintenance window is a separate server setting, not evidence that Kometa will finish during that window or overnight (Plex support documentation).

Understand overlay scope and protect your artwork
Overlays are configured at the library level, not for a hand-picked subset of titles. Kometa evaluates configured overlays across the library, removes overlays that no longer apply, generates images when needed and uploads them to Plex. If no asset directory supplies the source art, it backs up clean artwork before replacing it (Kometa overlay documentation).
- Start small: test with a limited configuration or smaller library so you can see what the rules change.
- Keep clean-art backups: retain Kometa’s backups or use an asset directory as the source of truth for poster art.
- Avoid unnecessary forced reapplication: each replacement image uploaded to Plex adds to its metadata, so repeatedly applying overlays can cause metadata bloat.
Kometa or Plex’s built-in collections?
Plex already provides smart collections, automatic movie collections and controls for custom collection posters and metadata. Its automatic movie collections depend on collection data from TMDb, which is limited to sequel collections available there rather than broader fictional “universes” (Plex collections support). Plex also fetches metadata and artwork automatically in most cases and lets you edit item artwork (Plex library editing support).

Plex’s tools are a sensible choice if you want a few collections or occasional poster edits without running another service. Kometa is a better fit if you want repeatable, configurable collection building and overlay rules—and are willing to set up and maintain them.

It can make a Plex library feel more organized and visually consistent if you choose useful collections and coherent artwork. Whether that looks better is personal: Netflix and Plex organize different catalogs, and there is no objective comparison established here. The practical advantage of Kometa is control over your own library’s presentation, not a promise that it will reproduce another service’s interface or taste.
