The idea was to complete focus sessions, deposit minutes into a balance, then spend those minutes to unlock selected entertainment apps. Building it exposed a harder problem than the metaphor suggested: a time bank is only useful if its rules are clear—and the app can enforce them predictably.
The problem I wanted to solve was my own ability to undo a rule
In my experience, a conventional app limit could be easy to evade because I was both the person setting the restriction and the person who could remove it. I tried using Opal, but by the second week I had forgotten to start a focus session or had removed a limit when it became inconvenient. That is not a general criticism of Opal; it made me notice a weakness in my own approach to screen-time management.

As Ravelo’s builder, I wanted a system in which access to selected apps was not simply unrestricted until I remembered to turn a blocker on. The initial mechanism was straightforward: complete a focus session, earn minutes, and spend them to open chosen apps. The bank language came later. Balances, deposits, purchases, and transactions offered a familiar way to explain what would otherwise be an abstract rule.
My aim was to make distraction feel less like an automatic default and more like a choice with a visible cost. That is the product idea, not evidence that it reduces screen time or improves wellbeing.

Beta feedback forced the rules to become more specific
The first model sounded simple, but testers surfaced edge cases that changed how the system worked. These were reports from Ravelo’s early beta, not proof of what every user prefers.
Purchased minutes and idle apps
In the initial approach, purchased time could keep running after someone stopped actively using an app. That raised a basic fairness question: should a balance be charged for the time an app is open, or only for the moments the person is using it?

Smaller purchases
The early purchase intervals were 15 or 20 minutes. Testers asked for smaller windows, including five minutes, because a large minimum could make a quick check feel too costly. That request later collided with a technical constraint in the scheduling system I was using.
When a focus session earns its reward
An earlier version credited partial focus sessions. I changed the rule so that a planned session had to be completed before its full reward was credited. That made the commitment legible: the reward followed completion, rather than accruing automatically for any amount of time spent in a session.

The central choice: charge for app use or for an access window?
I tested two different meanings of a purchase. In a usage-based model, buying 20 minutes would reduce the balance only while a selected app was actively being used. In a time-window model, a purchase opened access for a period on the clock, with the window able to be paused.

According to my beta feedback, testers preferred usage-based spending because it charged for active use. It was the more intuitively fair model when someone left an app idle. But that promise depended on receiving a precise threshold callback from Apple’s DeviceActivity framework. In my testing, I could not rely on the selected app being blocked at the exact instant the purchased usage ran out.

I therefore moved to time-based windows. I gave up the cleaner charge-for-active-use idea in favor of a rule I believed the implementation could enforce more predictably. As I put it, “I would rather ship a slightly less elegant promise that Ravelo can keep than a perfect idea it can only enforce most of the time.” That is my product judgment, not a guarantee about Apple’s frameworks or a claim that the time-window model is fairer in every situation.

What Apple’s Screen Time frameworks meant for this design
Ravelo used Apple’s FamilyControls, DeviceActivity, and ManagedSettings frameworks for app selection, activity monitoring, and restrictions. In my implementation, DeviceActivity callbacks were not hard real-time, so I treated them as unsuitable for promising an exact stop at a usage threshold. That observation describes my testing and design choices; it should not be read as a blanket statement about how Apple guarantees every callback across apps or framework versions.

The scheduling system I used expected an interval of at least 15 minutes, while testers had asked for five-minute purchases. I represented a five-minute window inside a 15-minute framework interval by treating the first ten minutes as elapsed. This was an implementation workaround, not an Apple-endorsed general technique or evidence that all apps face the same limit.
What Ravelo is now, and what the story does not establish
The current Ravelo site describes an iPhone focus app in which selected distracting apps are blocked by default; productive app use and focus sessions earn Time Currency, which can be spent to unlock selected entertainment. The site advertises a free download and paid Pro features. That is the vendor’s current product description, separate from the earlier build decisions recounted here. A current regional App Store listing identifies Ravelo as an iPhone app; a listing does not establish how well it works.
Ravelo’s privacy policy, dated July 27, 2026, says core Screen Time selections and raw FamilyControls tokens are handled on-device. It also says account-based features can involve server-side syncing of selected activity history and settings, and that core blocking can be used without an account. Those are the company’s disclosures, not an independent security audit.

The available account does not show that the app causes lower screen time, better wellbeing, or lasting behavior change. The useful result of the experiment is narrower: turning minutes into a balance makes the access rule visible, but deciding exactly when to charge—and making the lock trustworthy—takes more than a clever metaphor.
