If your Pixel usually ends the day with charge to spare, Google’s Limit to 80% option may help you worry less about long-term battery wear. It caps routine charging at 80%, so you trade some charge for the day for a setting Google says prioritizes battery health. It does not promise longer daily runtime, and Google does not quantify how much lifespan it adds.
How do I limit my Pixel to 80%?
On eligible phones, open Settings > Battery > Battery health > Charging optimization. Turn on Use charging optimization, then select Limit to 80%. Menu names can vary slightly by software version.

Google says the option is available on Pixel 6a and later. It is a built-in setting; you do not need a special charger or accessory to use it. Google describes the feature this way: “To help extend the lifespan of your Pixel’s battery, you can limit charging of your phone to 80%.” Google Pixel Phone Help
What changes when the 80% limit is on?
Your Pixel ordinarily stops routine charging at 80%, leaving less charge available than a full charge. Google presents the limit as a way to prioritize long-term battery health, not as a way to make the phone last longer between charges. The official guidance does not give a percentage estimate for extra battery lifespan or a guarantee of all-day battery life.
#1 Best Overall
- Attention-grabbing design meets the latest evolution of the Google Pixel Camera on the new Google Pixel 11 Pro; Gemini Intelligence helps manage details so you can live in the moment[1]; and the phone is available in two sizes
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan: Works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers[2]
- Stay informed without looking at your screen: When your phone is face down, Pixel HiLight gently alerts you with subtle glowing lights when your favorite contacts are calling or you’re talking with Gemini; exclusive to Google Pixel 11 Pro phones
- Magic Capture catches the moment as you live it: With just one tap, Pixel 11 Pro captures video and photos, and automatically edits, crops, and unblurs a curated collection, ready to share – and you get the memory of how it felt to be in the moment
- Two new cameras for more brilliant photos: A larger telephoto sensor captures 30% more light for clear, beautiful photos and videos, even in the dark[3]; Pixel’s longest zoom ever helps you capture details from impressive distances[4]
This setting is most practical if you usually finish the day with charge left. If you regularly need every bit of daily runtime, charging to 80% may be an inconvenient trade-off.
Should I use Adaptive Charging or Limit to 80%?
| Setting | Charge available | How it manages charging | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Limit to 80% | Routine charging is capped at 80%. | Uses a fixed charge limit. | You usually finish the day with charge left and want to prioritize long-term battery health. |
| Adaptive Charging | Charges to 100% near the predicted time you unplug. | Learns your charging habits and delays reaching 100% until shortly before you are expected to unplug. | You want a full charge for the day while reducing the time the phone stays fully charged. |
Adaptive Charging needs about 14 days to learn your habits, according to Google Pixel Phone Help. A changed routine, such as travel, may keep it from activating. On Pixel 4, it relies on overnight charging and an active alarm; Pixel 4a and later, including Fold, use learned charging habits.

Why does my Pixel sometimes charge to 100% with the 80% limit on?
Google says the phone needs to fully charge every tenth cycle so it can keep battery-capacity readings accurate. Even with Limit to 80% enabled, leave the phone plugged in for at least 30 minutes after the display reaches 100% on that cycle. This is part of Google’s operating guidance, not a sign that the limit is meant to deliver a full charge every day.
When should I switch the limit off?
If you expect a longer day or will be away from a charger, turn off the 80% limit when you need more charge. Google says the phone can then charge to 100%. You can turn the option back on when your usual routine makes the lower daily charge workable.
