The Galaxy setting is Data saver. It limits much of the mobile data that apps use in the background, helping you stay under your carrier’s allowance and avoid overage charges. It does not reduce your plan’s base monthly price, and Samsung does not promise a standard dollar saving.
How to turn on Data saver on a Galaxy phone
On supported Galaxy models, the control is usually here:

- Open Settings.
- Tap Connections.
- Tap Data usage.
- Tap Data saver.
- Switch on Data saver.
Samsung describes the feature this way: “Data saver prevents some apps from sending or receiving data in the background.” The restriction mainly affects activity while you are not actively using an app; it is not a master switch that disconnects every app or service.

Data saver can delay background updates, notifications, cloud synchronization and other automatic tasks. Use the exception list if an app must have background access.

- Open Settings → Connections → Data usage → Data saver.
- Tap the exception option, labeled either Allowed to use data while Data saver is on or Apps that can always use data, depending on the Galaxy model and software version.
- Turn on access for critical apps, such as messaging, authentication, work or safety services.
Every exception weakens the data-saving effect, so allow only apps whose background operation matters. An app can still use Wi‑Fi normally; Data saver is aimed at mobile-data traffic.
Set a warning and a hard limit
Data saver works best with Android’s built-in billing controls. In Settings → Connections → Data usage, open Billing cycle and data warning and configure:

- Billing-cycle start day: Match the first day of your carrier’s monthly data period.
- Data warning: Choose a threshold below your allowance so you have time to change your usage.
- Mobile-data limit: Where supported and appropriate, set a ceiling that can disable mobile data when the limit is reached.
Phone measurements may differ slightly from the carrier’s meter. Treat the warning as an early alert and check your carrier account for the authoritative allowance and billing status. A hard limit is stronger protection against overage use, but it can interrupt maps, messages, updates or other services once the threshold is reached.

| Control | What it does | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Data saver | Restricts some apps’ background mobile-data activity. | Background synchronization and updates may be delayed. |
| Per-app background restriction | Targets selected apps rather than applying a broad system rule. | More precise, but you must identify the biggest data users yourself. |
| Data warning | Alerts you as usage approaches a threshold. | It warns but does not stop consumption. |
| Mobile-data limit | Can stop mobile data at a chosen ceiling. | Services that depend on cellular data may stop unexpectedly. |
| Always-allowed exceptions | Gives selected apps unrestricted or continuing data access while Data saver is active. | Those apps can continue consuming your allowance. |
Why the setting can reduce a bill—and why it might not
Data saver can reduce the background traffic that pushes a metered plan over its allowance. That may prevent an overage fee, a throttling event or the need to buy additional data. The effect is largest when background-heavy apps routinely consume a substantial part of a limited plan.

It cannot change the carrier’s recurring subscription price. If your plan has unlimited data, or if your normal use is already well below its allowance, the financial difference may be zero. Samsung publishes no universal dollar amount because savings depend on the plan, billing period, apps, network conditions and personal usage.
Check these settings before travelling
Domestic mobile-data controls and roaming controls are separate. Data saver does not eliminate roaming charges. Samsung warns that roaming can create additional costs, particularly when you use mobile data outside your home country.

Troubleshooting common side effects
Notifications arrive late
Check whether the affected app is allowed under Apps that can always use data. Also review the app’s own battery-optimization and background-activity settings.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.

An app stops syncing
Temporarily add it to the Data saver exception list, then observe whether its background traffic is necessary. Remove the exception if the sync works acceptably when you open the app manually.
The phone still uses too much data
Open Settings → Connections → Data usage → Mobile data usage to identify the largest consumers. Apply per-app background restrictions, reduce video quality and automatic downloads, and confirm that a hotspot or tethered device is not using the allowance.
The usage total does not match the carrier bill
Make sure the Galaxy billing-cycle start date matches the carrier’s cycle. The phone and carrier can measure usage differently, so use the carrier’s account as the final reference for charges.

Quick Recap
What to remember
- Data saver primarily targets background mobile-data use; it does not block every connection.
- Exceptions preserve background access for apps you consider essential.
- A correctly dated warning and an optional hard limit add protection against exceeding your allowance.
- Roaming is a separate risk and can generate charges even when Data saver is on.
- Any reduction in cost depends on your plan and usage; enabling the setting does not guarantee a lower bill.
