PokéDev is a Pokémon-themed extension for VS Code and Cursor that ties an editor companion’s progression to work such as batched saves, coding time, Git commits and successful builds or tests. Its creator, Enrique Uribe, describes the idea simply: “Your partner should level up from the work you already do — not from fake clicks.” Read Uribe’s original article.
What PokéDev puts inside the editor
PokéDev is a fan-made editor extension with two ways to present its Pokémon-inspired world: a 2D overworld to explore or a classic floor-pet view. Alongside the partner, it offers a PokéGear and Explorer, plus screens for activity, badges, party, bag and challenges.

A GitHub Trainer Card and optional DEV Community badges extend the theme beyond the editor. The project also includes Shopify-aware development actions intended to award experience when a relevant action succeeds.
How editor work becomes progression
The design centers on events that can reflect actual development rather than a button pressed solely to earn points. Uribe describes progression from batched file saves, coding time, Git commits and verified build or test outcomes. Shopify theme and app actions are also described as earning XP on verified success.

Those are the creator’s stated mechanics, not evidence that every event is detected perfectly or that progression measures the quality or value of work. The project description does not provide a controlled test of its tracking accuracy or any productivity results.
How it treats coding with an AI agent
PokéDev offers three idle-clock modes: auto, manual and agentic. They are intended to distinguish ordinary typing from a developer supervising an agent, so time spent overseeing delegated work can be treated differently from time away from the editor.

This is an attempt to make the clock fairer when coding is not continuous typing; it should not be read as a perfect system for recognizing agent runs or verifying all work completed by an agent.

Uribe describes PokéDev as local-first and says it reads public GitHub and DEV Community data, with no OAuth and no telemetry. DEV badges can use a public username without OAuth. These are the creator’s claims; no independent code audit was conducted for the account of the project.

The stated implementation uses TypeScript, the VS Code Extension API and webviews, webpack, local extension storage, and HTTP reads of public GitHub and DEV data. Local storage and public-data reads describe the design as presented; they are not a substitute for reviewing the code or checking the extension’s current behavior.
How to try the version described in September 2026
In his September 17, 2026 article, Uribe said version 6.2.0 was actively developed but not yet listed on the VS Marketplace or Open VSX. The installation route he gave was to clone the repository, install dependencies, compile, and launch the extension in a debug editor:

- From the project directory, run
npm install. - Run
npm run compile. - Press
F5in the project to launch the extension in a development host.
Uribe also described packaging a local .vsix as an alternative. The marketplace status and version above are a dated snapshot, not a guarantee of present availability.
