There is no universal set of four soundbar settings to turn off. Controls differ by model, and features such as dialogue enhancement or night mode can be useful rather than detrimental. If commercials seem louder than a show, dialogue gets buried by action scenes, or you keep reaching for the volume control, try changing one relevant setting at a time and compare the same scene at the same volume.
Why there is no universal four-setting fix
Soundbars do not share one standard menu. Sony’s HT-S2000 guide covers Sound Field, Voice, and Night functions; JBL describes Smart Mode on a defined list of bars; and Samsung’s HW-Q990B manual lists several sound modes and audio controls. Their names and purposes are not interchangeable. Sony’s HT-S2000 guide, JBL’s Smart Mode support page, and the Samsung HW-Q990B manual reproduction describe model-specific behavior, not a recipe that applies to every soundbar.

So treat “turning settings off” as a controlled listening experiment, not an automatic upgrade. A processing feature can make some content sound less natural or less clear, but another feature may be the reason dialogue is easier to hear at low volume.
How to test a setting without guessing
- Identify your exact model. Check the label on the bar, its app, or the manual. Use only instructions that explicitly cover your model; button combinations are not universal.
- Choose one repeatable sample. Use the same scene or track, ideally one where you notice the issue.
- Change one setting only. Note its original state before switching it. Do not disable several processing options at once, or you will not know which change mattered.
- Match the volume and compare. A louder version can seem better even when the setting itself is not helping. Compare dialogue clarity, surround effects, and overall balance at the same listening level.
- Keep or undo the change. If the sound is worse, restore the original setting. Check again after powering off if you want to know whether the setting persists.
What the documented settings actually do
Sony HT-S2000: Sound Field, Voice, and Night
Sony says the HT-S2000’s settings can be adjusted using the app’s remote-control screen or the supplied remote. The remote cycles through Sound Field, Voice, and Night. Sound Field produces a surround effect; Voice enhances the dialogue range; and Night supports clear sound at lower volume. Those descriptions do not imply that turning all three off improves sound. Sony also says Night mode is automatically disabled when the speaker system is turned off, so check it again after a power cycle if you rely on it. These details apply to the HT-S2000, not other Sony soundbars. Sony HT-S2000 Help Guide.

JBL Smart Mode: check the supported-model list first
JBL says Smart Mode combines JBL surround sound with tailored EQ. Its support page notes that processing can be overwhelming for some multichannel content, potentially making dialogue feel less clear against surround effects. For the models listed on that page, JBL’s procedure is to hold MUTE for more than three seconds, then press Volume Up; the display reports “OFF SMART MODE” or “ON SMART MODE.” JBL says Smart Mode returns by default each time the bar turns on. Confirm your exact model appears on the support page before using that button sequence. JBL Smart Mode support.
Samsung HW-Q990B: modes and controls have different jobs
The HW-Q990B manual lists Standard, Surround, Game, and Adaptive sound modes, along with voice enhancement, night mode, EQ, speaker levels, and virtual-speaker on/off. It describes Standard as outputting the original sound, Surround as providing a wider sound field, and Adaptive as analyzing content and adjusting the sound field. Voice enhancement raises spoken-dialogue audibility; Night mode lowers volume while keeping dialogue clear. The manual also describes Auto EQ as using a microphone in the subwoofer to calibrate low frequencies. These are intended functions, not proof that disabling any one control is better for every listener. The cited source is a manual reproduction; consult Samsung’s official documentation for the current instructions for your unit. HW-Q990B manual reproduction.

If dialogue and action scenes have uneven volume
When dialogue is too quiet but action is extremely loud—or commercials are much louder than a program—the soundbar may not be the only place to look. TCL recommends checking the TV’s audio output connection and mode, volume-leveling or night-mode availability, surround or Dolby settings, sound modes, firmware, and audio processing on the source device. Compare more than one app or source: if the problem appears only in one, that can help narrow down where it originates. Feature availability varies by soundbar, so use the settings your own model provides rather than assuming it has every option. TCL volume-leveling troubleshooting.
