My first hands-on experience with Kingdom Hearts on Switch 2 left me with two reactions: I was hooked by its Disney-meets-Square Enix adventure, and overwhelmed by how much story the collection gathers together. There is an important timing detail: as of October 7, 2026, the full collection is announced for release tomorrow, October 8. The hands-on entry point available before launch was a free Kingdom Hearts III + Re Mind demo—not the complete collection.
What made Kingdom Hearts click—and what made it a lot to absorb
Kingdom Hearts brings Disney and Square Enix together in an action role-playing series built around Keyblade combat and journeys through Disney and Pixar worlds. Its official framing centers on friendship and protecting those worlds from darkness. That is an inviting premise; the scale of the story is the harder part for a first-time player to take in.

The Switch 2 collection is not one game with a simple beginning and ending. It combines three packages, and the material inside them is not all playable in the same way. Alongside games, there are HD cutscene compilations and a movie, so the collection presents a sizable amount of narrative through different formats.

Square Enix describes the first package as letting players “Explore six KINGDOM HEARTS titles starting with the very first adventure.” The wording helps orient newcomers, but it does not establish a complete official play-order recommendation for everything in the three packages. If you want to begin at the series’ earliest adventure, Nintendo describes 1.5+2.5 as starting with the very first one.

What you can try before the collection launches
Square Enix announced a free Switch 2 demo for KINGDOM HEARTS III + Re Mind, available starting June 10, 2026. It contains two sections: the opening through early Olympus, and a portion of Toy Box through its midpoint. Save data from the opening section can carry into the full game; Toy Box demo save data cannot.
That makes the demo a useful taste of the action and presentation, but not a substitute for trying the collection’s earlier entries or its full story sequence. The complete collection’s announced release date is October 8, 2026, according to Nintendo’s US listing and Square Enix. Availability can change, so check the current store listing before purchasing.

Digital or physical: the practical difference
Nintendo’s US listing describes a digital Switch 2 release. Square Enix also lists a physical edition, but says an internet connection is required to download additional data to play it. In other words, the physical format does not mean all required game data is on the card. The precise download size and retail availability were not established here; check the listing for current details.
If you own the older Switch Cloud Version
The Nintendo Switch Cloud Version was discontinued from sale on June 9, 2026, and is scheduled to remain playable until June 9, 2027 at 14:59 UTC. Square Enix says eligible owners can transfer Cloud Version save data to the Switch 2 digital versions and receive discounts on corresponding digital versions. The discount does not apply to the physical collection. Check Square Enix’s current terms to confirm eligibility and transfer details.

A sensible way in as a newcomer
The official product material points to the first adventure as a starting place, but does not provide a definitive full order for every game and story presentation. A low-pressure approach is to begin with the first adventure in 1.5+2.5, treat the cutscene compilations and movie as story material rather than additional games to master, and use the free KINGDOM HEARTS III + Re Mind demo if you mainly want to see how the third game feels on Switch 2.
That is practical orientation, not an official complete chronology. If following every thread matters to you, the bundle’s mix of games, compilations, and film means you should expect to move between play and watching rather than treating every included item as a conventional game.
