That can reveal useful overnight trends, but it is noisy during exercise and cannot reliably tell you that you are overheating. A dedicated exercise sensor such as the CORE body temperature sensor measures heat transfer at the torso to estimate core temperature, making it more relevant for live heat training—but also more expensive and cumbersome.
What a wrist temperature band is actually measuring
The phrase “body temperature” makes a wearable sound like a thermometer. In most wristbands and rings, the sensor is reading the temperature at the skin-device interface. That value changes with local blood flow, sweat, wind, ambient temperature, contact pressure and how tightly the band is worn.

Oura says its devices measure average temperature from the skin, which is not the same as basal or core body temperature. Google likewise explains that skin temperature varies more than core temperature because the body deliberately warms and cools the skin to regulate heat. Hume Health says wrist skin temperature can vary by 4–8 °C as environmental and physiological conditions change.
That distinction matters most during a workout. A breeze or evaporation can cool your wrist while your internal temperature continues to rise. Conversely, a hot sleeve, tight strap or warm indoor room can raise the local reading without a matching change in core temperature.

Why workout readings can look convincing—and still mislead
Skin temperature is highly local
The device sees one small patch of skin, not the temperature of blood circulating through your core. Wrist circulation also changes with intensity, stress and hand position. A loose band can lose consistent contact; an overly tight one can alter pressure and circulation.
The first minutes may be especially unreliable
Huawei warns that the first 10 minutes after putting on a band can be affected by thermal equilibrium between the device and your wrist. The sensor and your skin are still settling toward a common temperature, so an early spike or dip should not be treated as a physiological event.

Manufacturers include broad limitations
Garmin describes skin-temperature features on some devices as an average change measured during a selected sleep window, rather than a continuous core-temperature reading. Garmin also notes that wearable measurements have inherent limitations. Sleep is favored because the body, device fit and surrounding environment are generally steadier than during a run or ride.

What the data is good for
- Personal baselines: Repeated overnight measurements can show that your usual skin-temperature pattern has shifted.
- Trend context: A change that persists across comparable nights may be worth considering alongside sleep, illness symptoms, training load and resting heart rate.
- Post-workout review: A graph can help you notice patterns across similar sessions, provided you do not mistake it for a core-temperature measurement.
It is weak evidence for an immediate heat-strain decision. Use heart rate, pace, perceived exertion, weather, hydration strategy and symptoms together. Confusion, unusual weakness, loss of coordination, vomiting or other signs of heat illness require stopping exercise and seeking medical help; a consumer band should never be used to rule out an emergency.

How a dedicated exercise sensor differs
CORE is designed for live exercise data rather than overnight wellness trends. Its thermal-energy-transfer sensor detects heat moving into or out of the body and uses that signal to estimate core temperature. CORE says pairing with a heart-rate monitor improves conversion of measured heat flux into a core-temperature estimate.
Placement is central to the design. CORE recommends the chest or torso for best accuracy; an arm strap can be less accurate. The company says athletes can use the live estimate to pace, cool during races and hold a heat-training zone. Underwater accuracy is not guaranteed because Bluetooth or ANT+ connections may be weak or unavailable.

CORE specifications and practical costs
CORE/greenteg’s 2026 technical specification lists a mean absolute deviation of 0.21 °C and a weight of 12 grams. CORE’s guidance lists an accurate core-temperature range of 36 °C to 42 °C. CORE 1 is listed for five days of continuous monitoring.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThose figures describe a dedicated sensor under stated conditions, not a promise that every workout will produce laboratory-grade results. You also need to account for the chest or torso mount, a strap or clip, charging, a compatible phone or watch app and a heart-rate monitor if you want the stated precision benefit. The total setup is much less effortless than wearing a normal band.

What wearing one was like in practice
The wrist band: effortless but ambiguous
The appeal is obvious: put it on and receive a temperature graph without changing your routine. The drawback is interpretation. During hard efforts, the number can move for reasons unrelated to core heat, and the display can create false confidence that you have a direct thermometer reading.
CORE: more actionable, more demanding
A torso-mounted sensor provides a measurement target that better matches heat-training decisions. However, placement, pairing and keeping the sensor attached become part of every session. An independent Wareable review found CORE useful for heat training but noted practical snags, including discovering the sensor off the bike after a ride when clips were not used.
Who should buy which type?
- Choose a wrist or ring wearable if you mainly want overnight trends, a personal baseline and general training context, and you accept that the reading is skin temperature.
- Consider CORE if you follow a structured heat-acclimation plan, race in hot conditions or need live information to adjust pace and cooling. Be prepared for torso placement, accessory management and a more involved device ecosystem.
- Skip temperature features entirely if you expect a single number to diagnose overheating. No consumer wearable replaces symptoms, sensible pacing or medical advice.
How to use a temperature reading without overtrusting it
- Wear the device consistently and follow its fit instructions.
- Ignore the first several minutes after putting on a band while the sensor and skin reach thermal equilibrium.
- For a wrist device, prioritize comparable overnight measurements over isolated workout spikes.
- During exercise, compare any temperature signal with heart rate, pace, perceived exertion, weather and symptoms.
- For a dedicated sensor, use the recommended chest or torso position, pair the heart-rate monitor when supported and verify that the connection remains active.
- Stop and seek help for heat-illness symptoms rather than waiting for a wearable alert.
Verdict
I would not buy a wrist temperature band specifically to know whether I am overheating. It measures a useful but highly local skin signal, and workout conditions make that signal easy to misread. I can see the value for overnight baselines and long-term pattern spotting.
A dedicated sensor such as CORE addresses the more demanding question—how hot the body is becoming during exercise—while adding cost, mounting and connectivity work. For serious heat training, that trade-off may be justified. For casual workouts, the simpler and safer approach is to treat wrist temperature as context, not a command to keep going.
