The headline describes one owner’s repair, but it doesn’t identify the graphics card, the symptom, or what the teardown revealed. That means it cannot establish that a particular GPU has a widespread factory defect—or that thermal paste, a fan, or another part was responsible. If your own card is overheating or otherwise failing, check its warranty and contact the right service provider before opening it.
What this repair story can—and cannot—establish
An eight-month-old, $750 graphics card is the author’s description of a specific purchase and repair. Without the card model, board partner, symptoms, or teardown findings, there is no basis to identify the fault or say other owners are likely to encounter it. No prevalence figure establishes that the supposed defect is common.

A graphics-card heatsink can be removed as part of a thermal-paste replacement, as shown in iFixit’s general thermal-paste replacement guide. That procedure is not evidence that paste caused the fault in this particular card, and it is not a model-specific teardown guide.

If the card may still be under warranty, check the product-specific terms and contact the correct seller, board partner, or manufacturer before disassembly. That gives the service provider a chance to assess the reported problem and avoids adding accidental damage to the original fault. NVIDIA specifically advises that fan and heatsink replacement is not easy and recommends manufacturer repair or replacement for a card that remains under warranty (NVIDIA fan-replacement guidance).

If you are considering a repair yourself, first identify the exact card model and find instructions for that model. A general thermal-paste guide cannot tell you which fasteners, connectors, or thermal materials your card uses. Removing a heatsink or fan can also cause physical damage, so weigh that risk against the time without the card and the possibility that a service center can diagnose or repair the assembly.
Who handles an NVIDIA graphics-card warranty claim?
It depends on which card you own. NVIDIA says graphics cards made by its board partners are warranted by the partner; Founders Edition cards are covered directly by NVIDIA. Check the card’s documentation and the NVIDIA product warranty FAQ to confirm the appropriate route.

NVIDIA’s US warranty page describes three years of coverage for the NVIDIA-branded graphics cards listed there, for manufacturing defects or hardware component failures, with repair or replacement as the remedy for a covered defective product. The page was last updated July 19, 2016, so confirm current terms for your specific product and region rather than applying that period to every NVIDIA-based card. NVIDIA directs owners of its listed products who believe they have a defect to customer support: Graphics Card Warranty Information.

Does opening the card automatically void its warranty?
Do not assume a single rule applies to every manufacturer, product, and region. The available guidance does not establish that merely opening every graphics card automatically voids every warranty. But damage caused during a repair can affect how a claim is assessed.

For example, MSI’s December 26, 2024 guidance lists a cracked PCB, impact damage to PCB components, a broken fan blade, and a deformed backplate as examples of customer-induced damage. MSI says its service center makes the actual assessment; this is MSI’s policy guidance, not a universal warranty rule (MSI’s graphics-card damage guidance).

What to do before deciding on a repair
- Identify the exact card. Record the model and board partner, not just the GPU chip name. Warranty responsibility and repair instructions can depend on the card itself.
- Check the warranty and purchase route. Read the terms for that product and region, then contact the seller, board partner, or manufacturer responsible for service before opening the card.
- Describe the symptom, not an assumed cause. Report what happens and when. Overheating alone does not prove that thermal paste is defective.
- Ask about authorized service. Find out whether the provider will inspect, repair, or replace the card and what to do next. Keep the response and proof of purchase.
- Only consider self-repair with model-specific instructions. If the warranty route is unsuitable and you accept the risk, use a guide for the exact card. General guides establish the broad repair type, not the correct fasteners or materials for an unidentified model.
