Gmail’s search operators can bring old messages, attachment-heavy conversations, and large emails into view—even when they’re easy to miss in a routine inbox scan. Try these three searches as a review queue, then inspect the matches before deleting anything.
Three Gmail searches to find overlooked messages
Enter an operator in Gmail’s search box. The examples below use Google-documented operators; you can change their values to fit what you want to review. Gmail allows operators to be combined. Google’s search operator reference lists supported syntax.

1. Find older mail with older_than:
Search older_than:3y to surface mail older than three years. Adjust the number and unit for your review window: Gmail supports d for days, m for months, and y for years. For example, older_than:18m sets an 18-month window.
2. Find older mail that has attachments
Use older_than:2y has:attachment to focus on messages older than two years that include attachments. Open any attachment you may need before deleting its conversation; a search match alone does not tell you whether the file is still valuable.

3. Find large messages with larger:
Search larger:10M to find messages larger than 10 megabytes. Narrow the results by combining it with an age or sender criterion—for example, larger:10M older_than:2y or larger:10M from:[email protected]. This can help focus a review, but it does not guarantee a particular storage reduction if you delete matches.
Refine a search by date or sender
For a specific date window, use after:YYYY/MM/DD before:YYYY/MM/DD, replacing the date patterns with the boundaries you want. Add from: followed by a sender’s address or name to focus on mail from that sender. These can be combined with other operators, such as after:2022/01/01 before:2023/01/01 has:attachment. Check that the results match your intended window before acting.
Review results before deleting
Treat search results as a queue to inspect, not a verdict that every match is disposable. Check the conversation, sender, and any attachment you might need. On Gmail for computer, you can select messages in a category and follow the on-screen prompt to select all conversations matching that category before deleting. Google’s computer deletion instructions explain the process.
Deletion is not the same as permanent removal: Google says, “When you delete a message in Gmail, it’s moved to Trash.” Permanent deletion is a separate action from Trash. For Android, Google’s instructions describe selecting up to 50 messages initially with Select all, then selecting more in another batch; bulk selection therefore is not identical across platforms.
