If a recruiter asks you to pay upfront for a job, equipment, training, or a promised placement, treat it as a serious scam warning and stop before sending money. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says honest employers do not ask candidates to pay to get a job. This guide explains how fake recruiter offers can look convincing, how to verify a role independently, and what to do if you have already paid or shared sensitive information.
Why a recruiter asking me to pay is a warning sign
A recruiter may describe a charge as a processing fee, required training, equipment, certification, a starter kit, or resume reformatting. The label does not change the key question: are you being asked to pay for the job or the promise of employment? The FTC’s advice is direct: “Don’t pay for a job or the promise of employment.” Federal Trade Commission, Job Scams

In an FTC example, a supposed employer sends an invoice for a computer and tells the candidate to pay through a payment app, promising reimbursement later. The promised reimbursement does not arrive. A promise to repay you is not a reason to take the risk. Federal Trade Commission, August 2023

How a fake recruiter offer can unfold
Some scams begin with an unexpected message on a job site or social platform, or with an email or text. The sender claims to represent a familiar company, compliments your qualifications, and shares a polished job brief. There may be an online interview and an offer letter before the request for money appears. FTC examples show that scammers can impersonate known companies and use realistic-looking materials. A logo or professional document is not proof that the opening is real. Federal Trade Commission, August 2023 Federal Trade Commission, December 2023
A related approach says your resume is in the wrong format and sends you to a paid reformatting service. The FTC identifies this as a way of asking someone to pay for a job. Federal Trade Commission, May 2022

Not every scheme starts by asking for cash. A supposed employer may ask for a Social Security number, driver’s-license number, or bank details under the cover of onboarding or direct deposit—sometimes before discussing the job properly. Such information can be used for identity theft. Verify the employer and reach a genuine hiring stage before sharing it. Federal Trade Commission, July 2025
Warning signs I should not ignore
- Money is required before you can start. The stated purpose might be equipment, training, certification, a processing fee, or resume work. An employer’s promise of a job should not depend on paying the recruiter or a vendor they direct you to. Federal Trade Commission, Job Scams
- They promise reimbursement. In the FTC’s equipment-invoice example, the reimbursement is part of the pitch, not a safeguard. Federal Trade Commission, August 2023
- The contact channel does not match the company. A personal email account that is not affiliated with the employer is a reason to be cautious. Do not treat a company name in a profile or email signature as verification. Federal Trade Commission, Job Scams
- The process skips meaningful hiring steps. Be wary if the interview happens only by text or chat, or if sensitive information is requested before a real interview and hiring stage. Federal Trade Commission, July 2025
- The offer is unusually attractive or urgent. A salary far outside industry norms or pressure to decide immediately can be a warning sign. Slow the process down and verify the facts. Federal Trade Commission, Job Scams
- They demand a hard-to-recover payment. Gift cards, cryptocurrency, payment apps, and wire transfers are among the methods scammers may request. Federal Trade Commission, December 2023
- They send you a check and ask you to send money back. A check may later prove fraudulent, while money you forwarded can be difficult to recover. Do not deposit a check and forward part of its supposed proceeds. Federal Trade Commission, Job Scams
These clues are not a perfect detection test. The FTC says there is no sure-fire way to spot every job scam, so verify the specific opening even if some parts of the process seem normal. Federal Trade Commission, Job Scams

How to verify a job offer before paying or replying
- Stop the payment conversation. Do not pay for the promise of a job, and do not deposit a check and forward money to the recruiter. Federal Trade Commission, Job Scams
- Find the employer’s official site yourself. Search its careers page for the role. If you need to contact the company, use contact information you find on its official site—not a number or link supplied by the recruiter. Federal Trade Commission, August 2023
- Check the recruiter and company independently. Search their names alongside words such as “scam,” “review,” or “complaint.” No complaints found does not prove the offer is genuine. Federal Trade Commission, May 2022
- Hold back sensitive information. Do not send identity or financial details until you have verified the role and reached a real hiring step. Federal Trade Commission, July 2025
- Take time to decide. Discuss the offer with someone you trust rather than letting pressure or excitement rush you into paying or sharing information. Federal Trade Commission, December 2023

What to do if I already paid or shared information
If you sent money
Contact the company or service you used to send the money as soon as possible. Tell it the payment was connected to fraud, report the transaction, and ask whether it can be reversed. Do this whether you paid by card, payment app, wire transfer, gift card, cash reload card, or cryptocurrency; recovery is not guaranteed. Report the scam to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. If you shared personal or financial details
Take the exposure seriously: the FTC warns that scammers may use personal information to steal someone’s identity. The appropriate next steps depend on what you disclosed and how it may be used; do not assume that one action can undo the exposure. Federal Trade Commission, August 2023
Scope of this guidance
This is practical consumer guidance based on U.S. Federal Trade Commission materials, not a complete legal account for every country or jurisdiction. Placement practices and rules can vary elsewhere. In the United States, the key distinction is between paying for the promise of a job and choosing a separate paid career service; the latter should not be presented as a guaranteed path to employment.
