It took the Thanksgiving planning, creative-writing and household-budget tasks, while Claude Haiku 5.5 produced better answers for running-shoe research and a chaotic family schedule. That is a useful snapshot of practical strengths, not proof that one model is universally better.
What the five-prompt test measured
Amanda Caswell of Tom’s Guide used identical prompts for both systems and judged how closely each answer followed the instructions and how much additional work it left for the user. The prompts covered meal planning, fiction, shopping research, family logistics and a working budget calculator. The article was published October 15, 2026.

The comparison was an editorial test by one author. It did not report blinded grading, repeated runs, a formal scoring rubric, latency measurements or independent replication, so the 3–2 result should be read as a specific result for these prompts rather than a controlled benchmark.
Round-by-round results
| Task | Winner | What separated the answers |
|---|---|---|
| Thanksgiving dinner | ChatGPT | Handled a 5 p.m. meal for 10 people, including a vegan guest, a nut allergy, picky children, one oven and a $175 ceiling. It made most side dishes vegan by default, supplied a budget breakdown and added a backup plan. The reviewer said this cut cooking complexity by 50% in the scenario. |
| Middle-grade fantasy opening | ChatGPT | Both produced a 250-word opening about a boy, a cave and a kind dragon. Claude offered atmospheric detail and a distinctive dragon personality; ChatGPT moved into immediate action and was judged closer to the requested middle-grade tone. |
| Running-shoe research | Claude Haiku 5.5 | For a decades-long runner with high arches running 35 miles per week and a $150 limit, Claude explained the case for neutral, high-cushion shoes and suggested Brooks Glycerin, Hoka Clifton and Saucony Ride. ChatGPT supplied useful real-world data and follow-up questions but recommended the firmer Brooks Ghost, which the reviewer considered a poorer fit for this scenario. |
| Chaotic family schedule | Claude Haiku 5.5 | The prompt combined a 4:25 school-bus arrival, 6:30 soccer, a post-office stop before 6 p.m., dinner by 6:30 and a 4 p.m. work deadline. Claude’s delegation and rescheduling advice was judged more personal and actionable. ChatGPT added buffers and a problem-handling table. |
| Household budget calculator | ChatGPT | Claude made a straightforward calculator with sample bills. ChatGPT delivered a more polished editable app with reset functionality and mobile/offline use, making customization easier. |
Where ChatGPT-6 was strongest
Following several constraints at once
The Thanksgiving prompt rewarded systematic handling of allergies, dietary preferences, children, equipment and money. ChatGPT’s decision to make most sides vegan by default reduced the number of separate dishes and simplified the cooking plan.

Producing a ready-to-use artifact
The budget round was the clearest practical win. Rather than stopping at calculations, ChatGPT created an editable tool with reset controls that could be used on a phone and offline. That distinction matters when the desired result is something to operate, not merely advice to read.
Starting directly in the requested voice
For the fantasy prompt, immediate action and a recognizable middle-grade tone mattered more to the evaluator than atmosphere alone. ChatGPT met those constraints more directly.

Where Claude Haiku 5.5 was stronger
Personalized practical judgment
Claude’s shoe answer connected high arches and a 35-mile weekly workload with neutral, highly cushioned options instead of treating every running shoe as interchangeable. Shoe recommendations still require individual fit and, when pain is involved, professional advice; the test measured answer quality, not clinical suitability.
Managing competing commitments
In the family-schedule prompt, Claude did more than place events on a timeline. It proposed who could handle which task and what to move when the deadline, school arrival and evening activities collided. That made the plan feel more usable for a real household.

What the models’ official positioning adds
Anthropic positions Haiku 5.5 as a fast, lower-cost model for high-volume, latency-sensitive classification, routing, extraction and subagent work. Its published platform limits list adaptive thinking, the fastest comparative latency in its lineup, a 1-million-token context window, a 128,000-token maximum output and a June 2026 knowledge cutoff.
Anthropic lists API pricing from $0.10 per million input tokens and $0.50 per million output tokens for prompts up to 100,000 tokens. Those are API figures, not a guarantee of consumer-chat pricing, and prices and availability can change.

Which should you use?
| Your priority | Better starting choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| One-off planning with many constraints | ChatGPT | It was more complete in the meal-planning scenario and supplied a contingency plan. |
| Creative writing with a tight brief | ChatGPT | It followed the requested opening style and audience more closely in the test. |
| A usable calculator or editable mini-app | ChatGPT | Its budget tool included editing, reset and mobile/offline use. |
| Personalized product research | Claude Haiku 5.5 | It better matched the runner’s arch and mileage requirements in this example. |
| Schedules with conflicts and delegation | Claude Haiku 5.5 | Its rescheduling and task-assignment suggestions were judged more actionable. |
| High-volume developer workflows | Claude Haiku 5.5 | Its stated context, output limits and API pricing target fast, repeated workloads. |
How to interpret the 3–2 verdict
For a general user choosing a single assistant for mixed everyday prompts, this test favors ChatGPT: it won three rounds and was the stronger option when the answer had to follow many instructions or become a usable artifact. Claude Haiku 5.5 remains a compelling choice when personalization, schedule triage or an efficient API workflow matters more than the overall score.
