I Stopped Believing “99% Cost Reduction” Claims—So I Benchmarked My Own Tool

A “99% cost reduction” figure is meaningful only when you know what was compared and what counted as a successful result. Benchmark the same representative tasks with the same quality bar, then compare the full cost and latency of completed work—not token prices alone. The title’s experiment should be read as workload-specific: no tool, baseline, task set, or measured result is identified here, so none can be inferred.

Why a token-price comparison can mislead

A posted price per million tokens is not the same thing as the cost of completing a task. OpenAI’s token-counting documentation notes that models can tokenize the same text differently and generate different amounts of output or reasoning; a lower token rate therefore does not necessarily mean a lower total bill. OpenAI’s explanation of token counting describes why model-to-model comparisons need actual usage, not just list prices.

Task cost can also include more than ordinary input and output. Depending on the provider and workflow, account for cached input, billed reasoning, tool calls, retries, and other applicable usage. OpenAI’s API observability guidance discusses usage monitoring and recommends comparing the cost of the same task at the quality and latency an application needs. A missing usage field should not automatically be treated as zero; state how usage was captured and what the provider’s reporting did not expose.

Set up a comparison that can answer the question

Choose representative tasks and a real baseline

Write down the task set and the baseline configuration before comparing alternatives. Use work that resembles the application’s actual workload rather than a single convenient prompt. Record which model or tool version and relevant settings produced each run. The benchmark needs to identify the baseline against which any percentage is calculated; without it, “99%” has no usable denominator.

Run equivalent work and retain the outputs

Submit the same tasks under each configuration, using the same inputs and evaluation criterion. Keep the outputs so you can assess whether each run met the same quality or success bar. If settings or prompts must differ for a configuration to work, document those differences rather than presenting the runs as identical.

Capture usage and apply the prices for the tested configuration

Record actual provider usage for each request, including input, output, cached usage, billed reasoning where applicable, tool calls, and retries. Use the prices that applied to the tested provider, model, and usage category, and state the pricing date. Interfaces and billing categories differ, so explain the accounting method and any usage it could not capture. OpenAI’s observability guidance and token documentation are useful references for interpreting usage.

Report cost beside quality and latency

For each configuration, report cost per completed task alongside task success or quality and latency. A run that costs less but misses the quality bar, takes too long, or requires retries may not be a cheaper completion. Anthropic’s cost and intelligence guidance discusses evaluating cost per completed task, while OpenAI’s production best practices cover the trade-offs among speed, cost, quality, and usage monitoring.

What a “99%” result must specify

A percentage reduction is calculated against a baseline: (baseline cost − alternative cost) ÷ baseline cost. For that figure to be interpretable, identify the baseline cost, the alternative, the task set and period, the usage categories included, and what counted as a completed result. State whether quality or latency changed. Do not extend a result beyond the workload actually measured.

A published example illustrates why scope matters. In its 2025 EMNLP paper, SQUAB: Evaluating LLM robustness to Ambiguous and Unanswerable Questions reports comparable F1 scores for automatically generated tests and human-curated tests in its described comparison. The paper reports inference costs of $4 for SQUAB and $1,105 for Ambrosia, describing savings of up to 99% in that setting. Those figures belong to that study’s systems, tests, evaluation, and cost calculation; they are not a typical saving or evidence about an unidentified tool or workflow.

A practical benchmark report

Use a compact table to make the comparison auditable. Fill it with the results actually measured; if a value was not captured, say so rather than substituting a guess.

What to report What the reader needs to know
Workload Task types, task count or sampling method, inputs, and measurement period.
Configurations Baseline and alternative model or tool versions, plus relevant prompts and settings.
Cost Cost per completed task and total cost; provider, applicable prices and pricing date; usage categories included and accounting limits.
Quality or success Shared evaluation criterion and results for each configuration.
Latency How response time was measured and results for equivalent tasks.
Reduction calculation Baseline and alternative costs, the calculation, and the precise scope to which the percentage applies.

That is the difference between a benchmark and a slogan: another reader can see what was measured, what was held constant, and whether the result is relevant to their own workload.
