For my bedtime routine, dedicated sleep earbuds have three practical advantages over my AirPods: they put less pressure on my ears when I lie on my side, offer sound masking aimed at nighttime noise, and are designed around an overnight listening session. Those are personal-use observations, not proof that every sleep earbud beats every AirPods model. Fit and features vary, and the AirPods generation and sleep-earbud model matter.
1. They put less pressure on my ears when I sleep on my side
When I settle onto my side, a standard earbud can press between my ear and pillow. A sleep-first design is meant to reduce that problem. Ozlo describes its Sleepbuds 2 as low profile and intended for side sleeping, a design claim rather than a promise that they will feel comfortable in every ear.

In my routine, the difference is how the earbuds feel once I’m lying down—not how they perform at a desk or on a walk. Ear shape, the pillow, how the earbud fits, and how much you move during the night can all change the result. If you try a pair, check for pressure after lying in your usual position for a while; a product labeled for side sleeping can still be uncomfortable for you.

2. Their sound approach is built around masking nighttime noise
Dedicated sleep earbuds may focus on masking sounds rather than reproducing the same mix of calls, podcasts, and music I expect from general-purpose earbuds. Bose described its 2020 Sleepbuds II as using noise-masking audio to cover disruptive sounds, rather than active noise cancellation. Steve Romine, then identified by Bose as head of its Health Division, said: “Bose Sleepbuds II use advancements in our proprietary noise masking technology because covering sound — not cancelling it — is a better solution for sleeping.” That is Bose’s explanation of its own product, not evidence that masking is better for everyone or that it eliminates every sound.
#1 Best Overall
- SIDE-SLEEPER FIT THAT STAYS PUT ALL NIGHT. Just 1.6g and flush to your ear, so you can roll over without soreness or pop-out. Four soft ear tip sizes for a secure, personal fit.
- MASKS SNORING, TRAFFIC, AND CITY NOISE. A steady sound shield holds all night long, tuned for the low rumble of partner snoring. Consistent sound keeps the noises that usually wake you from reaching you.
- 14-HOUR BATTERY LASTS THE WHOLE NIGHT. No waking up to a dead bud at 3am. A private in-ear alarm wakes only you, at a volume you set, without disturbing your partner.
- 50+ SLEEP SOUNDS, OR STREAM YOUR OWN. White noise, nature, and calm tones for sleep or meditation, plus music and podcasts over Bluetooth. A sleep timer fades audio as you drift off, then switches to masking.
- PURPOSE-BUILT FOR SLEEP, NOT ADAPTED FROM DAYTIME EARBUDS. The Smart Case measures bedroom noise, light, and temperature overnight, and the Ozlo app (iOS + Android) turns it into sleep insights that sharpen with use.
That distinction matters if the problem is recurring background noise, such as sound from outside. Masking adds a chosen sound to make other noise less noticeable; active noise cancellation uses a different approach. A sleep-earbud feature set should not be assumed to match Bose’s older Sleepbuds II: that is a historical model, and its design details do not establish what Ozlo Sleepbuds 2 or a particular AirPods generation can do.
3. The design and runtime suit an overnight routine
My third advantage is convenience at bedtime: I want a device intended to stay in place and play sleep-oriented audio through the night, rather than earbuds I mainly use for general listening. Ozlo’s official Sleepbuds 2 page states up to 14 hours of battery life. That is Ozlo’s maximum-use specification, not an independent test or a guarantee of how long a particular person’s earbuds will last; the page does not establish my actual overnight runtime.

Sleep-focused features can also mean fewer general-purpose functions. Bose said its Sleepbuds II were not designed for calls or streaming music. That limitation applies to Bose’s historical product description; it should not be carried over to another model without checking its current specifications. If you need calls, your own music library, or a broader set of everyday features, compare the specific models rather than choosing by category name alone.
What to check before wearing earbuds overnight
Sleeping with earbuds is not automatically harmful, but volume, fit, cleanliness, and awareness of your surroundings matter. Cleveland Clinic audiologist Valerie Pavlovich Ruff, AuD, said, “A lot of people use earbuds to help them relax or block out noise. It can be OK, but it depends on how you’re using them.” Cleveland Clinic’s guidance notes possible concerns including hearing damage from prolonged loud listening, earwax buildup, moisture and infection risk, pressure discomfort, and difficulty hearing important sounds.

- Long-Lasting Battery with LED Display: Euno 7 Sleep Earphones provide up to 6–8 hours of playback on a single charge, with additional power from the charging case for extended use. These headphones for sleeping support overnight listening and everyday convenience. USB-C fast charging helps reduce downtime, while the LED display on the case clearly shows the remaining battery level of both the earbuds and charging case.
- Keep the volume low and limit listening time where possible.
- Clean the earbuds regularly, following the manufacturer’s care instructions.
- Consider whether you need to hear an alarm, a child, or an emergency during the night.
- If wearing earbuds causes pain, hearing changes, or signs of infection, stop using them and seek medical advice.
If you mainly want sleep sounds and do not want anything in your ears, an external speaker is another option Cleveland Clinic identifies. These devices may help make background noise less noticeable, but they should not be treated as a proven treatment for insomnia, tinnitus, or another medical condition.

My comparison is about bedtime comfort and routine, not a controlled test between a specified AirPods generation and a specified sleep-earbud model. For a useful personal comparison, focus on the problem you want to solve: pressure while side sleeping, the way nighttime noise is handled, or a listening setup designed for an overnight session. Check the exact model’s current features and specifications, then judge comfort and usability in your own sleeping position.
