I spent a week with Logitech’s $249 gaming headset — now my ears hurt

The Logitech G Pro X3 Lightspeed is an excellent competitive-gaming headset with one serious comfort flaw: its default leatherette earcups can trap enough heat to make long sessions painful. At $249 in the United States, it delivers bright, precise positional audio, a 50-hour rated battery and broad device support, but it lacks several convenience features that cheaper or similarly priced rivals provide.

What the Logitech G Pro X3 Lightspeed is

Tom’s Guide reviewer Peter Wolinski tested the Logitech G Pro X3 Lightspeed in a review published October 15, 2026. The headset is aimed at competitive players and works with PC, macOS and PlayStation 5 through a 2.4 GHz USB-A receiver, Bluetooth 5.3 or a 3.5 mm wired connection. Logitech lists the United States price at $249.

Its headline strength is sound. Wolinski writes that it “sounds fantastic, with an expansive treble and strong imaging for competitive players.” The 50 mm graphene drivers produce detailed, bright audio, and the default tuning brings out cues such as reloads and footsteps in shooters. A 10-band equalizer lets you reduce or reshape that emphasis when the upper frequencies become too sharp.

Why the headset made his ears hurt

Leatherette pads retain heat

After a few hours, Wolinski found the default leatherette earcups “way too hot.” Heat buildup is the practical comfort issue to consider before buying: a headset that feels comfortable for a short match can become unpleasant during an evening-long session.

  • Be Heard Loud and Clear. The big 6 mm boom mic makes sure you’re heard by gaming partners and mutes when flipped up.
  • Use One Headset For Most Game Platforms. Your headphones work with your PC or Mac via USB DAC or 3.5 mm cable, mobile devices with 3.5 mm cable or with gaming consoles including PlayStationⓇ 5 and PlayStationⓇ 4 (USB wireless stereo sound only), Nintendo Switch (wireless stereo sound when docked)
  • Game for Hours in Comfort. Everything about these headphones is about comfort: The deluxe lightweight leatherette ear cups and headband are made to keep pressure off your ears. Ear cups rotate up to 90 degrees for convenience.

His experience was intensified by disclosed Eustachian Tube Dysfunction. He reported in-ear pain, sensitivity and worsening tinnitus after the earcups became hot. That is an individual experience, not evidence that the headset causes a medical condition in every wearer. Anyone with recurring ear pain or tinnitus should stop using the headset and seek medical advice rather than trying to push through discomfort.

The alternate fabric pads are not a complete fix

The box includes fabric pads. They changed the sound isolation and felt sticky to Wolinski in a warm room, so swapping pads involves a trade-off rather than a guaranteed solution. Fabric may feel less sealed, while leatherette generally blocks more outside sound but holds more heat.

How it sounds in games and music

The bright tuning is useful when you need to locate a sound quickly. Footsteps, weapon handling and other high-frequency details stand out, and the imaging helps separate sounds across the virtual space. That presentation can also become harsh or piercing, especially at high volume or in games with aggressive treble. The equalizer is therefore a meaningful control, not just a specification: lowering the upper bands can make the headset easier to tolerate without discarding its positional accuracy.

Build quality is another strong point. The construction is lightweight while still feeling sturdy, and the wireless range is impressive: Wolinski measured reliable use at up to 98 feet (30 meters) in his test context. Walls, interference and room layout can reduce that distance.

Battery, connections and missing controls

Logitech rates the battery at 50 hours. That is enough for several days of ordinary use, but Tom’s Guide describes it as mediocre beside similarly priced headsets rated for up to about 70 hours. Actual runtime varies with volume, connection mode and other settings.

Feature G Pro X3 Lightspeed What the review context indicates about alternatives
Battery rating 50 hours Some similarly priced models are rated up to about 70 hours; model-specific figures were not stated
Wireless range Up to 98 ft/30 m in Wolinski’s test Comparable range figures were not stated
Connections 2.4 GHz USB-A, Bluetooth 5.3, 3.5 mm wired Connection combinations vary by model
Simultaneous Bluetooth and 2.4 GHz No; connections must be switched manually Availability varies by model
Game/chat mix dial No Feature availability varies by model
Active noise cancellation No Some rivals include ANC; model-specific details were not stated

The most important omissions are simultaneous multipoint, a game/chat mix dial and active noise cancellation. Bluetooth and 2.4 GHz cannot remain connected at the same time, so moving between a phone and a console or computer requires manually switching connections. Players who balance team chat against game audio from a headset control will need to use software or platform controls instead.

Platform and everyday-use checklist

  • PC and macOS: connect the USB-A wireless receiver for the low-latency 2.4 GHz mode, or use Bluetooth or the 3.5 mm cable.
  • PlayStation 5: use the USB-A receiver for wireless play; Bluetooth support does not automatically mean direct PS5 Bluetooth pairing.
  • Competitive shooters: the bright default profile and imaging favor positional cues, with the 10-band EQ available for refinement.
  • Long, warm sessions: expect the leatherette pads to be the main comfort risk; the included fabric pads alter isolation and may feel sticky.
  • Phone and computer at once: do not expect simultaneous multipoint; switching is manual.

How it compares with Logitech’s less expensive G-series option

Logitech’s official G325 listing describes a different headset with 24-bit audio, a beamforming microphone, more than 24 hours of battery life, Bluetooth, a 212-gram design, breathable knit fabric and dual-layer memory-foam earcups. Those are manufacturer claims, not independent measurements, but they illustrate the buying decision: a lower-tier model may prioritize breathable materials and lower weight while the Pro X3 prioritizes competitive audio detail, wireless range and a larger EQ feature set.

Is the $249 price worth it?

Buy the Pro X3 Lightspeed if precise, bright competitive-game audio, sturdy lightweight construction, broad PC/macOS/PS5 connectivity and long wireless range matter more than maximum battery life or extra controls. The 10-band EQ gives you a practical way to soften its sharpest frequencies.

Choose another headset if you regularly play for several hours in a warm room, need active noise cancellation, require simultaneous Bluetooth and 2.4 GHz, or depend on a physical game/chat mixer. At this price, a 50-hour rating and heat-prone leatherette pads are meaningful compromises, not minor footnotes.

The clearest verdict is conditional: the G Pro X3 Lightspeed is a strong competitive headset whose sound and range justify serious consideration, but comfort should decide the purchase. If your ears are sensitive to heat—or you already manage tinnitus or related problems—try it with the fabric pads, keep sessions shorter and stop immediately if pain starts.
