“I Shouldn’t Say This in Public”: United CEO’s Flighty Idea Raises Passenger-Privacy Questions

United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby did say, publicly, that he told his team to “just go buy Flighty.” The comment came in a January 15, 2026 interview about United’s technology strategy. It is evidence of an acquisition idea or internal direction—not evidence that United has bought Flighty, signed a deal, or obtained its users’ data.

The privacy question is still legitimate. Flighty says it does not sell personal information, but its privacy policy also allows information to be transferred in a sale, merger, acquisition, or partnership. That creates a potential change in data stewardship if ownership ever changes.

What Scott Kirby actually said

In a Stratechery interview published January 15, 2026, analyst Ben Thompson raised Flighty and its founder, Ryan Jones, while discussing United’s efforts to improve travel information and customer-facing technology.

Kirby said United had spoken with Flighty and that he had told his team to “just go buy Flighty.” He also said United would continue operating the product under the Flighty name. His explanation focused on bringing in capable people and a different product culture, not simply copying Flighty’s features into United’s existing app.

That distinction matters. A chief executive expressing a preference in an interview is not the same as an announced offer, signed purchase agreement, regulatory approval, or completed acquisition.

Is United buying Flighty?

Not according to the authoritative material cited here. The interview documents Kirby’s interest, but it does not establish that United made an offer or completed a transaction. There is also no evidence in the cited primary material that Flighty users’ information has been transferred to United.

Descriptions of a possible purchase in secondary coverage should therefore be read as reporting on a proposal or possibility, not confirmation of a deal. Until United or Flighty announces otherwise, “United wants to buy Flighty” is the accurate formulation.

What Flighty does—and why an airline might want it

Flighty is an independent flight-tracking app that presents real-time flight details, delay alerts, gate changes and cancellation information across airlines. Flighty’s press page describes the service and says it has millions of users.

Customer-facing product capability

United has been presenting technology, operational data, weather information and artificial intelligence as strategic parts of its customer experience. Flighty’s notification and disruption-focused interface could complement that strategy, although no specific integration has been announced.

Talent and product culture

Kirby emphasized “smart people” outside United’s headquarters who could challenge internal assumptions. That makes his comment resemble a talent-and-product acquisition as much as a conventional software purchase.

A competitive, multi-airline tool

Keeping Flighty under its existing name would preserve a separate product rather than immediately turning it into another United-branded feature. That could give United access to product expertise and a recognized service while leaving Flighty’s public identity intact—at least in the scenario Kirby described.

What information does Flighty collect?

Flighty’s privacy policy, updated February 25, 2026, says personally identifiable information is not required for ordinary use. It also describes data that may be stored when users enable particular features or provide information.

Feature or source What the policy says may be handled
TripIt synchronization A synchronization token; Flighty says it does not see the user’s TripIt email address or password.
Email An email address if a user supplies one, including for service or marketing messages.
Name or photo Information supplied to synchronize devices or display a profile.
Location Airport-location information when enabled; Flighty says non-airport location data is forgotten immediately.
Calendar import Calendar events that appear flight-related may be sent to Flighty’s server to identify matching flights.
Flighty Friends iCloud identifiers supplied through Apple to synchronize flights.
Notifications and technical data Random login or push tokens and basic technical information such as IP addresses.
Analytics Anonymous analytics used to improve the service.

The practical implication is that users do not all expose the same information. Someone who never enables calendar, location, TripIt or Friends features may provide less identifiable data than a user who connects several services and adds an email or profile.

Does Flighty sell or share user data?

Flighty’s stated position is privacy-focused. Its policy says it does not sell personal information, does not use Facebook or Google tracking SDKs in the app, and does not share information except when needed to provide functionality or comply with legal requirements. It also describes rights to request access to or deletion of personal information.

Flighty’s help page uses even broader plain-language wording: it says Flighty does not store or share personal information about users, devices or flights and never sells data. That summary should be read alongside the full policy, which explains feature-specific retention, technical identifiers, legal disclosures and corporate transactions.

“Does not sell data” and “cannot transfer data in a corporate transaction” are different promises. The second question is the one raised by Kirby’s comment.

What the acquisition clause means for privacy

Flighty’s policy says the company may sell, buy, merge or partner with other businesses, and that user information may be among the assets transferred in such an event. If United ever acquired Flighty, that clause would be the starting point for analyzing data stewardship.

It would not automatically give United unrestricted access to every user’s complete travel history. The result would depend on several facts that are not established:

  • Whether the transaction covered Flighty’s user databases, technology, staff, brand, or only some of those assets.
  • How Flighty and United systems were technically separated.
  • What privacy laws, contracts and data-minimization commitments applied.
  • Whether the policy changed and whether users received notice or a consent choice.
  • Whether United could combine Flighty information with booking, loyalty or customer-service records.

In other words, an acquisition could change who controls the information without proving that the information would be used for any particular commercial purpose.

Could United use Flighty data to change prices?

That is a hypothetical concern, not an established plan. A future owner might ask whether flight-tracking or itinerary signals could be combined with loyalty, booking or marketing systems to infer travel intent, identify frequent routes or target customers. But the cited sources do not show that United planned to use Flighty data for personalized fares, competitor intelligence, route decisions or partnership negotiations.

Any such use would have to be evaluated against the transaction documents, revised privacy terms, technical controls and applicable law. It should not be presented as something United is currently doing.

What could change for Flighty users?

Possible benefits

  • More engineering resources and investment in alerts or disruption guidance.
  • Improved access to airline operational data.
  • A larger team able to maintain the app and develop new features.
  • The possibility that Flighty remains a distinct product rather than disappearing into a legacy airline app.

These are plausible outcomes, not promises made to users.

Possible risks

  • Loss of neutrality: An airline-owned app could be perceived as less independent when users track American, Delta, Southwest or international carriers.
  • Data combination: Users may worry about Flighty information being linked with United bookings, MileagePlus accounts or advertising systems.
  • Product changes: Branding, subscriptions, support for competing airlines, release priorities or marketing could change.
  • Trust erosion: Some users may leave even if the technical privacy controls remain unchanged.

None of those changes has been announced. They are the issues users would need answered if a transaction were proposed.

What users can do now

  1. Read the current Flighty privacy policy, especially the sections on optional features and corporate transactions.
  2. Disable location, calendar, TripIt or Flighty Friends integrations you do not need.
  3. Avoid supplying optional profile details such as an email, name or photo unless the feature is useful to you.
  4. Contact Flighty to request access to or deletion of personal information, as the policy allows.
  5. If United or Flighty announces a transaction or policy revision, review the new terms before reconnecting accounts or enabling integrations.

These steps reduce optional data sharing; they do not change the fact that the app may process technical or feature-related information needed to operate.

Why independence may matter more than ownership alone

The central concern is not only whether United would sell Flighty data. Flighty’s value to many travelers comes from being a neutral, multi-airline service. A change in ownership could alter incentives even if Flighty kept the same name, interface and privacy commitments.

Conversely, United could acquire Flighty’s technology or people without taking every user record. A licensing arrangement, partnership, acqui-hire or partial asset purchase would have different privacy consequences from a full acquisition. The structure matters more than the phrase “buy Flighty” by itself.

The bottom line on the controversy

Scott Kirby publicly floated buying Flighty and said he wanted United to learn from its people and product culture. The available evidence does not establish a completed or pending acquisition. Flighty says it does not sell personal information and does not require personally identifiable information for ordinary use, but its policy allows information to move in a sale, merger, acquisition or partnership. For now, the story is a warning about possible future data stewardship and app independence—not proof that United already controls Flighty users’ travel information or is using it to set fares.
