ShareX treats a screenshot as the first step, not the finished job. Each capture can feed a configurable chain of actions: open it in an editor, annotate or blur parts of it, copy the image or its file path, save it, extract text with OCR, or upload it to a destination you choose. It also offers scrolling capture and screen recording. ShareX is free, open-source software for Windows. It is the stronger choice when you repeat the same capture-and-handoff routine, and Windows’ built-in Snipping Tool is the simpler choice when you only need a quick snip.
What happens after the capture
ShareX separates taking the picture from deciding what happens next. The official site lists these capture choices: full screen, active window, monitor, selected region, last region, scrolling capture, screen recording, GIF recording, and auto capture.

After a capture, the available tasks include opening an editor, copying the image or file path, saving, running OCR, scanning QR codes, and uploading. Which tasks run, and in what order, depends on the settings you choose. A capture is not automatically uploaded or edited. The workflow is what you configure, and that is where ShareX differs from a tool that simply ends at a saved file.
Annotating and cleaning up images
The official site documents these editing tools: arrows, text, numbered steps, highlighting, blur, pixelation, crop, cut-out, and image effects. Three routines show where they help:

Scrolling capture for long pages
Scrolling capture solves a problem that a normal viewport screenshot cannot. ShareX’s official scrolling-capture guide describes this sequence:
- Open the Capture menu and choose Scrolling capture.
- Select the region you want to scroll through.
- Let ShareX scroll the content and combine the successive images into one.
- Check the status indicator, which distinguishes successful, partly successful, and failed stitching.

- Static sidebars or footers that stay in place while the main content moves.
- Animated content that changes between frames.
- Hover effects that appear when the cursor passes over an element.
The documented mitigations are to select a tighter region that excludes the static or animated elements, and to move the cursor away from hover-sensitive content before the capture starts. Expect the result to vary by site and window. Long articles of plain text usually stitch cleanly; dashboards with fixed panels often need a second attempt with a narrower region.

Screen recording and GIF capture
Screen recording and GIF recording appear alongside the screenshot modes on the official site, so a single tool covers both still images and short clips. The sources used for this article do not describe frame rates, output formats, or audio options, so check ShareX’s settings for the current choices before you rely on a recording for a specific format.

Text extraction with OCR
OCR is listed as one of ShareX’s capture actions, and the official FAQ says it can extract text from images. In practice, this is useful when an error message, a configuration line, or a quoted paragraph exists only as pixels in a screenshot and you need to paste it elsewhere. OCR accuracy depends on the font, contrast, and image quality, and the sources used here do not measure it.
Uploading is optional
ShareX can upload captures to destinations you configure. The official FAQ says an account is needed only for services that require authentication. Local capture, editing, and saving work without one. If you want a link to share, configure an upload task; if you only want a file on disk, leave uploads out of the chain.

How it compares with Snipping Tool
Microsoft’s current support documentation describes Snipping Tool’s image snips (freeform, rectangle, window, and full-screen), video snips, a pen and highlighter, shapes, crop, text extraction, and quick redaction of email addresses and phone numbers. Microsoft states that text recognition runs locally on the device. Perfect Screenshot and Color Picker are limited to Copilot+ PCs. Feature availability depends on your Windows version, so confirm it against Microsoft’s page for your system.

The practical difference is depth of workflow. ShareX documents more capture modes, a full set of annotation tools, and a configurable chain of actions after each capture. Snipping Tool is more integrated and needs less setup, and it now covers video and OCR as well.
