I Replaced Some Cloud Automations With Local n8n Workflows—and Took More Control of My Smart Home

n8n can run workflows that read Home Assistant states and call Home Assistant services, making it possible to move some smart-home logic onto a system you control. That is not the same as removing every cloud dependency: individual device integrations and Home Assistant features may still use vendor or Home Assistant Cloud services. In my setup, the useful change was putting eligible automation logic in a local n8n workflow while being explicit about what remained online.

What changed when I moved automation logic to n8n

I used n8n as the workflow layer between Home Assistant events or entity states and the actions I wanted Home Assistant to take. The distinction matters: the devices and integrations still determine how signals reach Home Assistant, while n8n can decide what to do with information Home Assistant exposes.

n8n provides a built-in Home Assistant node. Its documented operations include reading entity states and calling services, as well as handling events, logs, configuration, templates, and camera proxies. That gives a workflow access to Home Assistant’s control surface without requiring every decision to live in a vendor’s cloud automation service. The node’s capabilities are documented at n8n’s Home Assistant node documentation.

My practical boundary was therefore not “everything is local.” It was “the automation logic I moved runs on my own n8n instance, and Home Assistant remains the system that represents and controls the smart-home entities.” Whether a particular action stays local depends on the device, integration, and remote services involved.

How the local workflow fits together

  1. Home Assistant provides the entities and actions. Confirm that the devices and integrations you want to use appear in Home Assistant and that the relevant service can be called there.
  2. n8n reads or receives the information needed for a decision. Use the Home Assistant node to read entity states or handle supported events. n8n also supports webhook-triggered workflows, but a webhook’s network exposure needs deliberate configuration.
  3. The workflow applies the decision. Add the conditions and sequencing that belong to your use case, then use the Home Assistant node to call the required service.
  4. Check each boundary. Determine whether the device integration, workflow trigger, or remote-control path calls an external service. A locally hosted workflow does not make an upstream cloud integration local.

n8n is available as both self-hosted software and a cloud service, so “n8n workflow” alone does not tell you where execution occurs. The deployment options are described in n8n’s overview. For a workflow intended to execute within the home network, the n8n instance itself must be deployed there and its connections configured accordingly.

What “local” does—and does not—mean

Question What a local n8n deployment changes What it does not establish by itself
Where does the workflow execute? A self-hosted n8n instance can execute on infrastructure you operate. That the workflow is local if you use n8n Cloud, or that every connected service is local.
What data leaves the home? You control the n8n host and can choose what the workflow sends to connected services. That no data leaves the home network. Device integrations, notifications, remote access, and cloud features may transmit data.
What happens during an internet outage? Local components may still communicate over the home network. That this specific setup or every automation will continue to work. The result depends on devices, integrations, hosting, and any internet-dependent service in the path.
Who manages security? You operate the self-hosted n8n environment and choose its network and storage configuration. Automatic security, updates, or privacy simply because the software is self-hosted.

Home Assistant supports local operation, but its documentation also describes cloud-connected features. Home Assistant Cloud includes remote access and services such as Alexa and Google Assistant integrations, speech services, backups, and webhooks; when users are at home, they can reach Home Assistant on the local network. See Home Assistant Cloud documentation for the feature and access details. Those options can coexist with local automations, so check the path for each feature rather than treating the whole installation as either wholly local or wholly cloud-based.

Webhook access needs a security decision

Home Assistant restricts webhooks to the local network by default. A webhook does not require authentication beyond knowing its ID, so that ID must be treated as a secret. If a workflow only needs to be triggered from inside the home, preserve the local-only boundary; enabling direct internet access broadens who may be able to reach the endpoint. Home Assistant explains the behavior in its automation trigger and webhook documentation.

Self-hosting also shifts operational responsibility to you. n8n’s guidance covers TLS through a reverse proxy, encryption at rest, security audits, and risks associated with community nodes. These are part of running the system, not optional proof that a local installation is automatically safe. Review n8n’s self-hosting security guidance alongside its hosting documentation.

If Home Assistant and n8n communicate through MQTT

MQTT is another integration path for discovery and availability. Home Assistant can create entities or device automations when it receives discovery messages. Retained messages can make discovery information available after a restart, while birth and will messages can help communicate broker availability. The trade-off is that stale retained discovery messages may leave ghost entities after a device or configuration is removed.

  • Use retained discovery messages intentionally; remove outdated retained data when retiring devices or changing discovery configuration.
  • Plan for restarts and availability messages so Home Assistant can distinguish a connected device from an unavailable one.
  • Check the actual broker, device, and integration behavior; MQTT support does not alone prove that every part of a device’s operation is local.

Home Assistant documents discovery, retained messages, and availability in its MQTT integration documentation. The n8n integration overview also discusses Home Assistant and MQTT, but it is vendor documentation, not an independent security audit: n8n’s Home Assistant and MQTT integration page.

When this approach makes sense

A local n8n workflow is a good fit when you want to orchestrate Home Assistant entities with more flexible logic and are willing to operate the workflow host. Before moving an existing automation, trace its trigger, decision, and action: identify which pieces Home Assistant exposes locally and which depend on a manufacturer account, external API, cloud assistant, or remote-access service.

  • Choose self-hosted n8n if local execution and control of the host are priorities, and you are prepared to secure, update, and maintain it.
  • Choose n8n Cloud if hosted workflow execution suits your needs; do not describe that deployment as a local workflow merely because Home Assistant is in your house.
  • Keep cloud-dependent features where needed if an integration or service you rely on requires them. Local automation and cloud features are not mutually exclusive.
  • Test each automation’s failure path under the conditions that matter to your household, such as a disconnected internet link, an unavailable broker, or a restarted host. The platform documentation alone cannot establish how a particular household behaves in those cases.

The value for me was control over where selected workflow logic runs and a clearer view of what each automation depends on—not a blanket claim that every smart-home device or feature stopped using the cloud.
