Streaming quality depends on the host PC, client device, network route, codec support and settings. There is no controlled head-to-head test here establishing a universal winner, so treat this as a first-person result—not a promise that everyone will see the same improvement.
What changed when I switched to Steam Remote Play
Steam Remote Play sends video and audio from a gaming PC to another supported device and returns the player’s input to the host. Steam Link is the client app available on many of those devices. That arrangement made it a straightforward fit for my Steam games and devices, and the image quality in my setup finally met my expectations.

The outcome is specific to my setup. A stream’s appearance and responsiveness depend on the host’s ability to encode, the client’s ability to decode, the network between them, and the resolution, frame rate and bitrate selected. A different combination can produce a different result.

How Steam Remote Play, Moonlight and Parsec differ
| Option | Host and client model | Compatibility and notable conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Steam Remote Play / Steam Link | A gaming PC encodes the game stream; a remote device receives it and sends input back. | Steam Link is listed for iPhone/iPad, Apple TV, Android, Fire TV, Raspberry Pi, Windows, Linux, macOS and Meta Quest. Valve says Remote Play Together requires only the host to own and install the game. VR has separate requirements, and Remote Play Together is not supported for VR. Valve’s Steam Remote Play page and Steamworks documentation list details. |
| Moonlight with Sunshine | Moonlight is the client; Sunshine can act as its host. | HDR10 is conditional: the Windows host needs a GPU capable of HEVC Main 10 encoding and an HDR-capable display or EDID emulator; the client needs HEVC Main 10 decoding and HDR output. The Moonlight project documents known HDR issues. See the Moonlight setup guide. |
| Parsec | Parsec describes its software as proprietary desktop-capture and game streaming. | Its compatibility article lists hosting on Windows and macOS, and joining on Windows, Linux, macOS, Android and Chromium browsers; iOS/iPad is unsupported. See Parsec’s compatibility information. |
These descriptions establish different support and setup paths, not a performance ranking. Choose by the exact host and client devices you have, the games you want to stream, and the features you need.

Which settings can improve Steam Remote Play quality?
Start with the network and host
Valve says, “We recommend using a wired network for the best streaming experience.” Wiring the host to the router can reduce dependence on Wi-Fi, but it cannot fix weak host encoding, limited client decoding or a poor internet route. Valve recommends at least a quad-core CPU for the game host and a client GPU with hardware-accelerated H.264 decoding; these are vendor recommendations, not independently measured thresholds. See Steam Support’s Remote Play troubleshooting guidance.
Adjust stream quality to match the devices
Steam’s Remote Play settings let you tune speed versus quality, bandwidth limits and maximum capture resolution. If the picture stutters or degrades, test a lower game resolution; Valve also suggests disabling vertical sync as a troubleshooting step. Try hardware encoding on the host or hardware decoding on the client according to the symptom, then use Steam’s performance overlay to check which encoder and decoder are active. The relevant controls and suggestions are documented in Steam Support’s guide.

Check congestion before changing equipment
Valve notes that router QoS or bandwidth-priority settings may help by prioritizing the host or client. That is a possible tuning step, not a reason to buy a new router by default. First test the current setup, try wiring the host to the router you already have, and avoid competing network traffic when possible. Details are in Valve’s support guidance.

What Parsec’s own gaming targets say—and do not say
Parsec’s gaming settings guidance, updated September 29, 2026, recommends a 1920×1080 host resolution, 60+ FPS and a 25+ Mbps bandwidth limit. For gaming where latency matters more than color fidelity, it recommends HEVC on and constant FPS and 4:4:4 color off on the client. It says the color-oriented options may be enabled when hardware and network conditions can sustain them or color accuracy matters more. These are Parsec’s recommendations, not comparative test results. See Parsec’s gaming settings guide.

Parsec’s connectivity guidance, updated July 8, 2026, recommends 30 Mbps upload at the host and 30 Mbps download at the client for its 1080p60 profile, client ping below 15 ms to a same-city server, Ethernet at the host, and avoiding background uploads or downloads. These are vendor targets for that profile, not universal minimums or guaranteed outcomes. See Parsec’s networking guidelines.

- You want to stream Steam games to one of the devices listed for Steam Link.
- You prefer a Steam-centered setup and do not need a feature that depends on Moonlight/Sunshine or Parsec.
- Your host, client and network can support the resolution and responsiveness you want.
Moonlight/Sunshine may suit a setup where its host-client arrangement and conditional HDR support meet your needs. Parsec may suit a device combination it supports and settings tuned to its own recommendations. Check current official compatibility and setup pages before committing: platform support and technical requirements can change.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
What to check if a Steam stream still has problems
- Confirm the devices: Check Steam Link availability and host/client capabilities against Valve’s Remote Play page and Steam Support’s troubleshooting page.
- Reduce variables: Wire the host if practical, pause heavy network activity, and test a lower game resolution before changing multiple settings at once.
- Inspect encoding and decoding: Use the performance overlay, then test hardware encoding on the host or hardware decoding on the client if the observed symptom points there.
- Investigate firewall or discovery issues: Steam lists UDP ports 27031 and 27036 and TCP ports 27036 and 27037 for streaming, and notes a same-subnet discovery requirement in some connection cases. Check Steam Support’s networking guidance before changing firewall rules.
Is Steam Remote Play better for your setup?
It was better for mine, but the available official guidance does not establish that Steam Remote Play always beats Moonlight/Sunshine or Parsec on image quality or latency. There are no independent, controlled comparative measurements here. Match the tool to your devices, network and priorities, then tune the stream and judge the result on your own setup.
