I Replaced Google Search With a Local LLM for a Week—and It Changed How I Find Answers

A week-long Android experiment with Gemma 4 E2B showed that a local language model is not a replacement for Google Search. It is a useful second tool: private and offline for text-based work, but unsuitable when answers must be current, local, navigable or independently verified.

What the experiment tested

Android Police author Rahul Naskar ran Gemma 4 E2B on an Android phone through Google’s Edge Gallery app. He used the on-device model as an alternative to Perplexity for questions that appeared not to require internet access. The report, published August 13, 2026, is a qualitative account rather than a controlled benchmark: it does not identify the handset, test sample size, error rate, battery drain or thermal behavior.

The practical question was simple: how much of everyday answer-finding can happen without sending prompts to a cloud service?

Where the local model worked well

Math and structured reasoning

Gemma handled high-school mathematics problems offline. That makes a local model useful for working through an exercise when you do not need a current fact or an external source. Its equation formatting was sometimes difficult to read, however, so a correct-looking answer still requires checking.

Ideal for gaming, video editing, and multitasking, it provides expansive and crisp multi-display support.

Image-based suggestions

After an image was uploaded, the model suggested balcony and wall colors. This is a good fit for an on-device assistant: the image can stay on the phone while the model generates ideas, rather than being sent to a remote service.

Summaries and extraction

The strongest everyday use cases were text-centered. The model summarized long passages, pulled specific details from a supplied text and brainstormed concepts. These tasks have a bounded source: the model can transform material you provide without needing to discover what happened today.

Where it failed as a search replacement

Historical facts were not reliably factual

Naskar encountered multiple hallucinations, including on historical questions. The model’s stated knowledge cutoff was January 2025, but a cutoff is not a guarantee that information before that date is accurate. A fluent answer is not evidence, and local execution removes the convenient links a search page normally exposes for checking claims.

Current information forced a switch back online

Follow-up questions that depended on fresh information required a web-connected service. Current events, changing prices or policies, local businesses, travel conditions and newly published material all cross the boundary where an offline model cannot retrieve evidence.

Simple questions received oversized answers

The model often over-answered short prompts. It also produced equation layouts that were hard to read. Those are usability problems rather than internet-access problems, but they matter when the goal is a quick answer.

Local LLM versus web-connected search

Need Local LLM on a phone Google or another web-connected search service
Freshness Limited to the model and its installed data; this experiment reported a January 2025 cutoff. Can retrieve current pages and recent developments.
Factual reliability Can hallucinate, including on historical questions; verify important claims. Offers source pages to inspect, though search results still require judgment.
Privacy Prompts and supplied files stay on the device during local processing. Queries are sent to an online service under that service’s policies.
Offline access Works without a connection after the model is available on the phone. Requires an internet connection.
Startup and continuity Restarting or switching back to the app took time to initialize; old chats were not seamless to resume. Web sessions and search history may be easier to continue, depending on the service and settings.
Answer style Useful for summaries, extraction and brainstorming, but can be verbose or format text poorly. Good for finding an exact page, quote, document or destination.
Best fit Private, text-centered work and ideation. Current facts, local information, navigation and verification.

A practical split workflow

  1. Start locally when the source is yours. Use an on-device model to summarize a document, extract dates from text, brainstorm names or ideas, solve practice problems and discuss an image you are comfortable storing on the phone.
  2. Switch online when time matters. Use web search for news, live schedules, current software behavior, local services, prices, regulations and anything that may have changed since the model’s data was prepared.
  3. Verify consequential answers. For health, legal, financial, safety or historical claims, open authoritative source material. Treat an offline model’s response as a draft or explanation, not as proof.
  4. Keep the privacy boundary deliberate. Local processing is valuable for sensitive prompts and files, but it does not make the answer automatically correct. Privacy and accuracy are separate decisions.

What running one on a phone actually involves

You need an Android smartphone capable of running an on-device LLM application, along with enough available memory and storage for the app and model. Compatibility depends on the phone, operating-system version and app; the experiment did not establish a universal handset requirement or performance level. Expect initialization time when launching or returning to the model, and do not assume that a previous conversation will resume as smoothly as a cloud chat.

The answer to “Can a local LLM replace Google Search?”

No—not for general search. Naskar’s conclusion was direct: “A local LLM can’t replace an AI model that browses the internet.” The useful change is choosing the right tool earlier. A local model can replace a cloud assistant for some private, offline transformations of text and images. It cannot discover today’s information, point you to an exact page or supply dependable verification without outside sources.

That boundary also explains why the week changed the way answers were found: instead of treating every question as a search query, the workflow first asks whether the task needs retrieval. If it does not, local processing can be faster from a privacy perspective and available without connectivity. If it does, web search remains the necessary step.

What other users report

A Hacker News discussion dated April 8, 2025 reflects a similar divide in user language: people find LLMs helpful for open-ended exploration, while preferring search for current, local and exact-source questions. Those comments are anecdotal and do not provide a performance statistic, but they describe the same practical boundary as the Android experiment.
