Which route works depends on what you want to keep: instant access and playlists, or more deliberate discovery and a closer connection to the people making the music.

What changes when you stop using Spotify?
The biggest change may not be the music you can access; it may be how you encounter it. A streaming service makes it easy to move from one track to the next and receive algorithmic suggestions. Leaving can mean choosing another service with similar conveniences, or relying more on people, radio, shops, purchases, and a personal music library.

Adkins wrote that recommendations from people made listening feel more connected to those people. The experiment was a personal report, not a controlled comparison, and Adkins said the Spotify algorithm had not been “cleansed” by the end of the month. That experience is a useful prompt, not a promise that everyone will enjoy the same change. If you value automated playlists above all, a different streaming service may be the least disruptive option. If recommendations feel repetitive or listening has become background noise, adding human-curated discovery or buying selected releases may be worth trying.
What should you use after Spotify?
Another subscription service
Apple Music, Qobuz, Tidal, and Deezer are alternatives mentioned in the coverage reviewed for this topic. That is not a current, region-specific service comparison: price, catalog, device support, discovery tools, and available audio formats can vary by country and change over time. Check each service’s current offer where you live, and look up a few favorite artists before switching.

A move to another subscription can preserve on-demand listening and curated playlists, but it will not necessarily preserve your playlists, saved library, recommendations, or listening history in exactly the same form. Treat migration tools and trial periods as service-specific, and confirm what happens to saved music and account data before cancelling.
Radio, friends, and record shops
For discovery led by people rather than an algorithm, try a local or community radio station, ask a friend for a short list of albums, or ask a record-shop worker for a recommendation based on something you already like. These routes are less tailored to your listening history, but they can introduce context and conversation alongside the music.

In Adkins’s Guardian account, record-shop operator and underground-radio operator Justin Moon described the kind of engaged listening he hoped customers would find: “It’s not this kind of passive wash-over-you rubbish that you make your two-minute noodles to and forget all about 10 seconds later,” he said. That is Moon’s view, not an objective finding about streaming or the way all listeners use it.
Buy music directly
Bandcamp appears in the Guardian reporting as both a place to discover music and a venue for artists to sell releases. Buying an album or track is a way to support a particular release directly, but it does not establish that every artist earns more from every sale than from streams on every service. The available coverage does not support a reliable, comparable ranking of artist payments, so avoid choosing a platform based on unsourced per-stream figures.

Listen to local files or physical records
A personal library of downloaded files or CDs can make listening less dependent on an active subscription, while vinyl offers a physical format and a different listening ritual. Adkins’s month-long experiment included iPods and vinyl; it does not establish that a particular current player is necessary or that this approach is right for every listener. Consider the practicalities: where your files come from, how you organize and back them up, and whether the equipment you already own can play them.

Service features, prices, and availability change, and the personal reviews of Apple Music and Qobuz cited in coverage are not apples-to-apples tests. Use current service pages for the details that affect your decision rather than treating a writer’s preference as a universal recommendation.
What can the DIY boycott movement tell you?
Guardian reporting on a 2025 DIY boycott movement describes artists and listeners discussing whether to step away from Spotify, alongside artists selling music through Bandcamp. Those accounts offer context about people’s motivations and criticisms; they do not settle the economics of streaming for all artists or prove that one alternative pays best. If artist support is your main reason for leaving, focus on actions you can verify—such as buying a release from an artist you want to support—rather than relying on a platform-wide payout claim.
Try a low-risk listening experiment
- Decide what you want to change. Pick one reason—such as repetitive recommendations, subscription cost, or wanting to support specific artists—so you can judge the experiment against a real goal.
- Keep your options open. Before cancelling, check the account and cancellation terms, note playlists or albums you would miss, and confirm whether your preferred alternative has the artists and devices you need.
- Replace one listening habit at a time. For a week, try a friend’s album recommendation, a radio show, or a release you choose to buy. If convenience matters most, compare another service instead.
- Review how it felt. Ask whether you discovered music you liked, whether listening fit your routine, and whether the cost and access trade-offs were acceptable. Extend the change, adjust it, or return to your previous setup based on that experience.
A month-long experiment like Adkins’s can show what one listener found meaningful, but it cannot predict your own result. A short, reversible trial makes it easier to learn which parts of streaming you want to leave behind—and which conveniences you still value.
