Yes. A home server can answer Wikipedia requests during a complete internet outage if you download a Kiwix ZIM archive beforehand and serve it on your local network. The server stores the archive, kiwix-serve provides a local HTTP site, and phones, laptops, tablets, and other devices browse it through an ordinary web browser without reaching Wikipedia or the wider internet.
What the offline setup actually does
Kiwix is the software layer that turns a compressed OpenZIM archive into a browsable website. While online, you obtain a dated Wikipedia ZIM file and copy it to a computer, Raspberry Pi, NAS, or attached drive. During an outage, clients connect to that machine’s private-LAN address instead of to a public Wikipedia address.

The arrangement is deliberately centralised: one computer stores the ZIM files and runs Kiwix Server, while everyone else uses a browser. That avoids maintaining a separate multi-gigabyte copy on every device.
How much storage Wikipedia needs in 2026
The current official Kiwix download index lists several English editions. Sizes are the archive downloads themselves; leave additional capacity for the operating system, temporary download files, and future releases.

- Includes 128GB Micro SD Card pre-loaded with 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS, USB MicroSD Card Reader

- CanaKit Low Noise Bearing System Fan
- Mega Heat Sink - Black Anodized
| Edition | Current listing | What it contains | Practical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| All maxi | 119G, dated 2026-08 | Broadest listed edition, including images | Closest to a full visual Wikipedia mirror; use more than 119 GB of free space |
| All mini | 13G, dated 2026-09 | Much smaller edition | Best when storage or download bandwidth is limited |
| All nopic | 49G, dated 2026-06 | Text-focused edition without pictures | Middle ground between coverage and storage |
“All Wikipedia” is therefore an edition choice, not one fixed size. Maxi offers the widest image-rich experience; mini reduces storage and transfer time; nopic removes pictures while remaining substantially larger than mini. The dates matter because the directory contains changing releases, not a permanently current file.
Build the server
DIY Raspberry Pi
Kiwix supports Raspberry Pi, and its server is lightweight enough for Raspberry Pi Zero-class systems and NAS appliances. For the 119G maxi archive, a Raspberry Pi 5 paired with a USB SSD is a sensible configuration. Raspberry Pi systems can boot from microSD and can also use USB, network, or PCIe-connected storage. A 256 GB or larger drive leaves room for the archive, the operating system, temporary files, and another release during an update. A high-endurance microSD card is suitable for the operating system or a smaller edition, but a low-capacity card is not enough for the 119G maxi file.

Prebuilt Kiwix Hotspot
Kiwix describes its Hotspot as an optimised, plug-and-play device built on Raspberry Pi 5, with Wikipedia and other offline resources ready for local access. It reduces installation and networking work, but a DIY server gives you more control over the drive, archive mix, and update process. Check current availability and the exact included storage before buying either approach.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteInstall and serve a ZIM archive
- Download while online. Select the desired English Wikipedia release from Kiwix’s official library or download index. Choose maxi, mini, or nopic based on coverage and available disk space.
- Create dedicated storage. Put the file in a dedicated ZIM directory, such as
/data, on the server or its attached drive. For maxi, confirm that free space exceeds the 119G file size before starting. - Install Kiwix Server. Install the Kiwix Server application or the
kiwix-toolspackage for your operating system. - Start the HTTP service. Kiwix’s example command is
kiwix-serve -p 80 /data/*.zim. The-p 80option listens on port 80 and the wildcard publishes the ZIM files in that directory. - Find a stable local address. Reserve the server’s address in your router’s DHCP settings or assign a local hostname. A stable address prevents every client from needing a new bookmark after a reboot.
- Test from another device. Join the same home Wi-Fi or wired LAN and open the server’s local HTTP address in a browser. Load an article, follow internal links, and test an image if you selected an image-containing edition.
Once the ZIM is stored and the service is running, the client does not need an internet route. A phone can browse the archive over Wi-Fi even when the router’s upstream connection is disconnected, provided the local network and server remain powered.

Keeping the archive current
Each ZIM is a snapshot. The dated filenames in Kiwix’s directory mean freshness is a maintenance decision: there is no universal automatic update schedule promised by the official documentation. When a newer release appears, connect the server—or another download computer—to the internet, check available space, download the new file, verify that it completed, and then add or replace the old archive.
For a safer replacement, keep the old ZIM until the new one has been tested. Downloading a second 119G maxi file requires room for both copies plus system overhead; if that space is unavailable, use a separate staging drive or remove the old file only after confirming the new download.

Networking and security limits
Kiwix Server is a local HTTP service. The Kiwix FAQ documents HTTP/1.1 without SSL and recommends a reverse proxy for serious deployments. A home-only installation should normally be restricted to the private LAN by router and host firewalls. Do not forward its port to the public internet merely to make it reachable remotely.
Recommended Free Tools
- LAN access only: allow connections from your home subnet and block unsolicited internet-side traffic.
- Remote access: treat this as a separate project requiring authentication, TLS, firewall rules, patching, and a carefully designed remote-access method.
- Outage resilience: keep the server, storage, and Wi-Fi access point on backup power if you need access during a household power interruption as well as an ISP outage.
Troubleshooting common failures
The page does not open
Confirm the client is on the same LAN, the Kiwix process is running, and the address includes the correct port. Check the server’s local IP after a reboot and reserve it in the router if it changed.

The archive is missing from the library
Verify the file path and permissions, then restart kiwix-serve with the directory containing the ZIM. A partially downloaded or renamed file may not be usable.
There is not enough disk space
Use mini or nopic, attach a larger SSD, or stage downloads elsewhere. The 119G figure describes the maxi archive, not the total space a working system needs.
Images are absent
That is expected with the nopic edition. Choose maxi for image-rich coverage; mini and nopic make deliberate storage trade-offs.

It provides fast local access to the contents captured in the selected snapshot, including internal article links and (where included) images. It cannot show edits made to Wikipedia after that release, fetch external links, or update itself while the internet is unavailable. Those limits are inherent to serving a static offline archive, not a fault in the local network.
