I Paid for Gigabit Internet—Why So Few Devices Can Use It at Full Speed

A gigabit internet plan sets the speed tier delivered to your home; it does not guarantee that every phone, laptop, Wi-Fi connection, or test will reach gigabit speeds. The result at any device depends on the whole path from your provider through the modem or router, ports, cables, wireless conditions, and the device itself. Compare a wired test with a Wi-Fi test before buying new equipment.

What a gigabit plan does—and does not—promise

Your plan describes the internet service you subscribe to, not the speed every device will measure. The Federal Communications Commission distinguishes advertised service speeds from theoretical capacity, while a device speed test also reflects your home network and the capabilities of the device running it. A phone or laptop can therefore test below your plan even when the service reaching your router is performing as expected.

There is no reliable general statistic in the cited official guidance for what share of household devices cannot use a gigabit connection. The practical question is which part of your particular connection is limiting the result.

Where gigabit speed can get lost

Router and wired ports

A connection can be capped by a router WAN or LAN port, a switch between the router and computer, or the computer’s Ethernet adapter. For example, a 100 Mbps port cannot pass gigabit rates. Check the specifications and reported link speed for each device in the wired path before replacing anything.

  • Connect more devices than ever before - Wi-Fi 6 technology simultaneously communicates more data to more devices using OFDMA and MU-MIMO while reducing lag dramatically
  • Powerful Dual-Core 900MHz Processor – Handles multiple data streams simultaneously for reliable performance across your devices. Ensures smooth streaming, online gaming, and video conferencing without buffering or lag.

A USB Ethernet adapter has its own rating, and its performance can also depend on the host computer and USB port. An adapter cannot exceed the limits of either itself or the device it is connected to.

Wi-Fi and the device using it

Wi-Fi performance depends on both the router and the client device, as well as the band, distance, walls, interference, and other active devices. The FCC says 2.4 GHz generally reaches farther but processes data less quickly than 5 GHz. A router’s advertised wireless capability does not mean every connected phone or laptop can use it at full speed. Google Fiber’s Wi-Fi guidance also identifies placement and competing activity as factors that can affect results: Improve your Wi-Fi speeds.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5) | Dual Band Wireless Internet, Gigabit, Easy Mesh, Works with Alexa - A Certified for Humans Device
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

The FCC notes: “When multiple wireless devices are using the same Wi-Fi network, it can impact performance and create lag, or slower responses.” Its Consumer Guide to broadband and Wi-Fi troubleshooting is U.S. consumer guidance; it does not establish a speed outcome for every home.

Cable and test conditions

A damaged or unsuitable cable can affect a wired connection, but changing cables is not a general fix for slow Wi-Fi. NBASE-T Alliance material describes compatible equipment supporting 2.5 and 5 Gbps signaling over existing Cat5e or Cat6 cable runs up to 100 meters. That capability depends on compatible equipment and installation; it is not a guarantee for an arbitrary home run or a reason every gigabit subscriber needs Cat6: NBASE-T Technology.

TP-Link Dual-Band AX3000 Wi-Fi 6 Wireless Gigabit Internet Router for Home | EasyMesh, VPN Clients & Server, HomeShield, OFDMA, MU-MIMO, USB 3.0, Secure by Design - Archer AX55
  • Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
  • A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
  • Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
  • Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
  • Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.

Speed tests also reflect the conditions at the moment they run. A single result is not, by itself, proof that your provider is underdelivering or that your router needs replacement.

How to find the limiting link

  1. Establish a baseline. If your router or provider offers a router-side speed test, run it. Then connect a capable computer directly to the router by Ethernet and test again. Record the device, connection method, time, download and upload results, and whether other heavy traffic was active. Google Fiber explains that a direct Ethernet connection is faster and more stable than Wi-Fi in its Google Fiber 2 Gig guidance; that is provider-specific advice, and a wired result still depends on the equipment and test device.
  2. If both results are low, inspect the wired path. Confirm your subscribed tier and check provider status. Verify the router’s WAN and LAN port rates, any intervening switch, cable condition, and computer adapter and link speed. If the router-side result is also unexpectedly low, ask your ISP to confirm the service handoff.
  3. If Ethernet is good but Wi-Fi is slower, test the wireless conditions. Run a test near the router, compare 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz if both are available, and check the device’s Wi-Fi capability. Then consider distance, walls, interference, and other devices using the network.
  4. Repeat under comparable conditions. Use the same device and test method where possible, and note active network use. Compare like with like rather than treating one Wi-Fi result as a measurement of the provider’s service tier.

What to change—and when to spend money

  • Router: Consider an upgrade only if its specifications or the wired comparison show that it is limiting the subscribed service or the coverage you need. Check whether your router supports your subscribed speed, including the WAN and LAN port rates, and whether its Wi-Fi works with your devices.
  • USB Ethernet adapter: This can provide a wired connection for a laptop without an appropriate Ethernet port. Match its rating to the laptop’s USB capability and the rest of the wired path.
  • Ethernet cable: Replace a cable when inspection or testing points to a cable problem. A higher-category cable by itself will not make a Wi-Fi connection reach gigabit speeds.
  • Router placement: If the wired test is strong but Wi-Fi weakens farther away, first try placing the router in a more favorable location and retesting before shopping for equipment.

Do not buy a router based only on a large theoretical wireless-rate figure. The relevant match is between the plan, router ports and wireless support, client devices, and the coverage needed in your home.
