Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf your Android home screen keeps snapping back to portrait, first check whether your phone has a separate home-screen rotation setting. Samsung Galaxy phones have one, labeled Rotate to landscape mode. If your phone does not offer it, a third-party launcher with a documented orientation option can do the same job. The exact controls differ by phone, launcher, and app version, so confirm them on your own device.
Check the built-in home-screen setting first
Many people assume that the home screen simply follows the phone’s general screen rotation. On some devices it does not. Samsung documents a home-screen switch that is separate from the general rotation control, so you can use the phone in landscape without the home screen rotating with it, or you can allow it to rotate on purpose.

On a supported Galaxy phone, follow Samsung’s US support instructions:
- Turn on Auto rotate. Samsung’s guidance calls for this before you change the home-screen switch.
- Open Settings, then tap Home screen.
- Turn on Rotate to landscape mode.
- Return to the home screen and turn the phone sideways. The home screen should now stay in landscape.
If the switch is missing, your phone or One UI version may not offer it. Samsung’s instructions refer to Galaxy devices, so treat them as device-specific rather than a general Android path.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.

What changes when the home screen goes landscape
Turning on landscape does more than rotate the wallpaper. Samsung says apps and widgets realign when the orientation changes, and it gives an example where a 4×6 grid in portrait becomes a 6×4 grid in landscape. Your icons are not lost, but they will not sit in the same positions.
Landscape also limits editing. According to Samsung’s documentation, you cannot move or delete apps and widgets, or resize folders, while the home screen is in landscape. You will need to switch back to portrait to rearrange anything. That restriction is documented for Samsung’s home screen. Do not assume the same limit applies to other launchers.

Third-party launchers with documented orientation options
If your phone lacks a home-screen rotation switch, or you want more control, a launcher can handle orientation itself. Each of the following documents a different approach, so check the exact setting after installing.

Niagara Launcher
Niagara’s help documentation describes an Allow Home Screen Rotation setting. To find it, open Niagara Settings, go to Productivity, and enable Allow Home Screen Rotation. Niagara says landscape is enabled by default on large devices such as foldables and tablets, so phone users will usually need to turn it on.

BIG Launcher
The BIG Launcher manual for version 5.9.0 documents a screen-orientation option under Preferences > Appearance > Select screen orientation. It offers three choices: Automatic, Horizontal (always landscape), and Vertical (always portrait). If you only ever use the phone sideways, Horizontal is the most direct option, because it does not depend on sensor behavior. Later versions may move or rename these options.
Square Home
Square Home’s app listing says it supports foldables, tablets, and phones. The developer’s description also says tile layouts can differ between portrait and landscape. The listing does not, in the material reviewed for this article, give a step-by-step path to lock orientation. Check the installed app’s settings before relying on landscape behavior.

Expressive Launcher
Expressive Launcher’s listing advertises landscape and large-screen support for foldables, tablets, and ChromeOS. That is a developer claim. The listing does not describe the specific orientation controls, so test the home screen on your own phone before you commit to it.
Comparing the options
| Option | Orientation control documented | Editing in landscape | What the documentation does not establish |

| Niagara Launcher | Allow Home Screen Rotation in Niagara Settings > Productivity; on by default on large devices | Not stated | Whether phones get landscape by default |
| BIG Launcher (v5.9.0 manual) | Automatic, Horizontal (always landscape), or Vertical (always portrait) | Not stated | Behavior in versions after 5.9.0 |
| Square Home | Not stated in the listing; developer says layouts can differ by orientation | Not stated | Exact controls and whether they are tested on your phone |
| Expressive Launcher | Not stated; listing advertises landscape support | Not stated | Specific orientation controls and independent testing |
Choosing the right setup

- Look for the built-in switch. On Galaxy phones, Settings > Home screen > Rotate to landscape mode is the first place to look.
- Confirm your phone and Android version. Documentation often names specific devices, and behavior can change with system updates.
- Decide whether you need to edit the home screen in landscape. If you do, avoid a setup that locks editing while sideways.
- Pick fixed or automatic. A fixed landscape option stays sideways regardless of sensor input. An automatic option follows how you hold the phone.
- Test before relying on it. Rotate the phone, place a few apps and widgets, reboot, and check that the layout holds.
If the home screen still flips to portrait
A launcher’s setting only affects the launcher that owns the home screen. If you have installed a third-party launcher and changed the built-in Samsung switch, or the reverse, the setting you changed may not apply to the screen you are looking at. Check which launcher is set as your default home app, then open that launcher’s own settings. Also confirm that general Auto rotate is on, because a launcher’s landscape option usually depends on it.
The Bottom Line
If you use your phone only in landscape, start with the built-in home-screen switch if your phone has one. If it does not, choose a launcher whose documentation shows a fixed or clearly labeled landscape option, and test editing and rearranging on your own device before you rely on it.
