Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →You probably do not need a $300 DAC if your existing audio interface is quiet, reliable, loud enough for your headphones, and compatible with your computer and sources. An interface already contains a digital-to-analog converter (DAC) and an analog output stage. Replace it only when you can identify a real limitation—noise, dropouts, insufficient power, output-impedance problems, missing connections, unsupported drivers, or a control you genuinely need.
An audio interface is already a DAC
Music files are digital, but headphones and speakers need an analog electrical signal. The interface performs that conversion, then sends the signal through its line and headphone output stages. SoundGuys describes the distinction well: “An audio interface is still a clean DAC under the hood—just one designed for people who do more than press play.” The extra circuitry is intended for recording, microphone inputs, monitoring, and studio connections, but those functions do not make its playback conversion inherently obsolete.

That is why a decade-old interface can remain a sensible playback device. Age by itself does not establish that its converter is audibly worse. In a Sound On Sound comparison, the E-MU 1820M still sounded very good for its price against several standalone converters; subtle differences were difficult to notice without direct comparison. The relevant question is what the unit does in your system now, not when it was released.
Test the interface before spending money
Run these checks at the listening level and with the headphones or monitors you actually use:
#1 Best Overall
- 2 in 1 USB Audio Adapter: UGREEN USB to 3.5mm jack audio adapter supports both listening and talking. In-line control and microphone function allows you to chat while gaming. This USB Aux adapter enables you to connect headphones, headset, speakers with 3.5mm jack to your PC through the USB A port. [*Note: The 3.5mm adapter can support the connection of a single microphone for use. Please note that the 3.5mm male microphone's attribute requirement is TRRS]
- 24bit 96KHz High Quality Sound: Built-in advanced smart chip, USB sound card supports CTIA and OMIP standard headsets. The USB to Aux adapter facilitates high-resolution audio output and noise reduction up to 24bit/96kHz (others are 16bit/48kHz)to enhance the original sound quality of your PC devices. Note: Microphone does not support 24bit 96KHz, only headphones can
- Built to Last: With aluminium alloy shell, the Aux to USB adapter is more durable and portable than other plastic USB audio adapter. Nylon braided design of USB to audio jack adapter ensures stable audio transmission. 10000+ bend tests prove that USB headset adapter can prevent damage caused by tangling and scratching
- Broad Compatibility: This USB external sound card is compatible with Windows 11/10/98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux//Raspberry Pi, MacBook Pro 2019, MacBook Air 2018, PS5/ PS4, Switch 2, Google Chromebook, Windows Surface Pro 3. *Note: Does not support Apple headphone line control
- Plug and Play: No driver is required, just plug and play. USB bus-powered, no external power is required for this convenient sound card. *Note:Supports regular headphones with a resistance of less than 50 ohms, but does not support high-resistance headphones
- Noise: With music paused and the monitor or headphone volume at a normal setting, listen for hiss, hum, buzz, or digital crackle. Check again with the computer, display, and other connected equipment powered on.
- Reliability: Look for dropouts, clicks, sample-rate switching problems, USB disconnects, or output channels that stop working.
- Headroom: Play demanding tracks and confirm that the interface reaches your preferred level without the volume control being at its limit or dynamics sounding compressed.
- Output impedance: Compare the interface’s headphone output specification with your headphones. A high output impedance can change the frequency response of low-impedance or multi-driver headphones.
- Connections: List the inputs and outputs you need now—USB, optical, coaxial, balanced line outputs, multiple monitor feeds, or a second headphone output—and identify anything the interface cannot provide.
- Software support: Verify that the manufacturer still supplies a driver, firmware, or class-compliant mode for your current operating system. A clean converter is not useful if the computer can no longer use it reliably.
If it passes those checks, a new converter is unlikely to deliver a dramatic audible change in ordinary listening. A new product may measure better, but measurable superiority is not automatically an audible improvement in every complete system.
When a headphone amplifier is the better upgrade
If the interface sounds clean but your headphones run out of volume or punch, the missing component may be amplification rather than conversion. A dedicated headphone amplifier can add voltage and current headroom while leaving the interface as the DAC. Connect the interface’s line output to the amplifier, then plug the headphones into the amplifier and keep gain settings conservative.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
This approach avoids paying for a second DAC when the existing one is already transparent enough. Check the amplifier’s output power at the impedance of your headphones, rather than relying on a headline wattage figure, and avoid stacking excessive gain that raises the noise floor.

When a DAC or DAC/amp replacement makes sense
A replacement is justified when it solves a documented problem:
Rank #3

- Complete Accessories: Includes USB charging cable, optical cable, and PC-USB to Type-B cable. Ensures hassle-free setup and immediate use. Seamless connectivity for various devices. (Note: No microphone input.)
- Audible hiss, hum, distortion, or electrical interference remains after checking cables, gain, and grounding.
- The interface cannot provide enough headphone voltage or current for your specific headphones, and a separate amplifier is impractical.
- Its output impedance audibly interacts with your headphones.
- You need a digital input or output the interface lacks, such as optical, coaxial, or a second computer connection.
- Drivers are broken, unsupported, or unreliable on your operating system.
- You need front-panel volume, a remote, balanced headphone output, selectable filters, or another control that your current setup does not offer.
Standalone DACs and DAC/amps can provide excellent measured performance. Sound On Sound’s 2018 review of the RME ADI-2 DAC reported just over 120 dB A-weighted AES17 dynamic range. Hi-Fi News measured the iFi ZEN DAC’s response as ruler-flat to 20 kHz within ±0.02 dB for CD/48 kHz inputs, while reporting a 400 mΩ headphone output impedance. Those are useful engineering data, but they do not predict an audible benefit unless your interface, headphones, or listening conditions expose a shortcoming.
Compare the limitation, not the product category
| Question | Keep the interface when… | Consider a replacement when… |
|---|---|---|
| Noise and distortion | Outputs are quiet and clean at your normal level. | Hiss, hum, clipping, or distortion is audible after basic troubleshooting. |
| Headphone drive | Your headphones reach the desired level with headroom. | You need more voltage/current, or output impedance changes the sound. |
| Connectivity | Existing USB, line, monitor, and digital connections cover the system. | You need an input, output, or routing option the interface lacks. |
| Controls | Its monitor and headphone controls are convenient enough. | You need a remote, display, separate outputs, or other daily-use control. |
| Drivers | It works reliably with your current operating system. | Support has ended or dropouts make it unreliable. |
| Total cost | No missing capability justifies additional hardware. | The new unit solves a specific, recurring limitation. |
Portable and hybrid options
A compact DAC/amp can be sensible when portability or a single-cable setup is the problem. AudioQuest’s DragonFly Copper launched at £229/$250; the review also listed the earlier Cobalt at £269/$300 in 2019. Treat those figures as launch or historical context, not a current guaranteed price, and verify present availability before buying. A desktop unit such as the iFi ZEN DAC is another replacement path when you need a different input arrangement or stronger integrated headphone output. Neither option is automatically an audible upgrade over a functioning interface.

What to do with the money instead
If the interface passes the practical checks, put the budget toward headphones, speaker placement, acoustic treatment, or music. Those changes address transducers and room interaction—the parts of a playback system that are often more consequential than replacing one competent DAC with another. Revisit the decision only when a concrete limitation appears.
