I Moved My Plex Library to Jellyfin—and Kept My Media Files in Place

You can move from Plex to Jellyfin without moving your movie and TV files: point Jellyfin at the folders you already use, then rebuild and review its libraries. In my case, nothing broke on the way. That is my experience, not a guarantee that every Plex user’s metadata, watch history, or remote setup will transfer unchanged.

What moves—and what has to be rebuilt

Your media files and your server’s catalog are separate things. Jellyfin libraries can point to existing folders, including multiple paths, so switching applications does not inherently mean copying your movies or shows to new storage. Jellyfin creates its own database, however; its documentation says its internal databases are not easy to copy or adjust. There is no documented, complete Plex-database import that carries every detail across.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

That distinction explains what “moving a library” means in practice: keep the files where they are, create new Jellyfin libraries, and decide separately what to do about metadata, users, and watched status. See Jellyfin’s migration documentation.

How to move from Plex to Jellyfin

1. Inventory your existing folders

Before changing anything, note the paths for movies, television, music, and any other media you want Jellyfin to serve. Keep Plex available while you set up Jellyfin; that gives you a working reference if a title or setting needs checking.

  • Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.

2. Add the existing paths as Jellyfin libraries

In Jellyfin’s library setup, create separate libraries with the appropriate content type—such as Movies or Shows—and select the existing folders. A library can include more than one path. Avoid mixing unrelated content types in one library: Jellyfin warns that mixed libraries can make metadata results unreliable. Your files do not need to be relocated just because the server application changed.

3. Let Jellyfin scan, then check the results

Jellyfin builds its own catalog and retrieves metadata using its configured providers. Its defaults include TMDb, OMDb, and local NFO files; additional providers can be added through plugins in the official plugin catalog. A fresh scan is not the same as importing Plex’s catalog. Review titles that are easy to confuse, alternate editions, custom episode ordering, artwork, and fields you edited by hand. Correct mismatches in Jellyfin rather than assuming Plex’s choices came across.

4. Decide whether to transfer watched status and users

Jellyfin’s migration documentation points to third-party API scripts that can copy watched status and users from Plex, Emby, or another Jellyfin instance. That is a limited, separate transfer—not a full metadata migration. Before using a script, check what it actually transfers, how it matches items, and whether it handles the users you need. No particular script’s compatibility or matching accuracy is established here.

Plex also documents an opt-in watch-state and rating sync feature, with server-version and metadata-agent requirements. It is not, by itself, a direct Plex-to-Jellyfin exporter/importer. Check Plex’s watch-state sync requirements if you use that feature, but do not mistake it for a complete migration path.

5. Recreate accounts and check access

Set up Jellyfin users and grant each person access to the libraries they should see. Jellyfin’s user controls also include permissions for remote connections; configure those deliberately rather than assuming a new account has the right access. The Jellyfin user documentation describes the available controls.

Will Jellyfin keep Plex posters, metadata, and watch history?

Do not count on a complete carryover. Jellyfin starts with its own database and metadata process, so Plex’s full set of posters, descriptions, custom fields, and other catalog choices is not established as transferable. Jellyfin can use local NFO files as a metadata source, but that does not guarantee every Plex edit or artwork choice will be read as intended. Scan the libraries and inspect the titles you care about.

Watched status and users are a more specific case: Jellyfin documents third-party API scripts for those items. Treat them as optional, separately verified tasks. A successful watched-status transfer would not mean the Plex database or all its metadata had moved.

How remote access differs after the switch

Jellyfin can run without an internet connection, but online metadata providers need internet access. Remote viewing is another matter: it depends on the server’s network configuration as well as the user’s remote-connection permissions. A working local library does not automatically make the server reachable from outside your home. Follow Jellyfin’s networking documentation and test access from outside your local network.

This is a trade-off, not a reason to assume remote access is impossible: Jellyfin gives you control over the setup, but the server and network need to be configured. Check client availability for the particular devices you use; support can vary by platform, and it is not established here for every device.

What Plex’s remote-video policy actually requires

The “creeping paywall” is an opinion; the relevant policy is narrower than “Plex became paid.” Plex says that, since April 29, 2025, remote playback of personal video on affected apps requires one of three subscription routes: Plex Pass on the server administrator’s account, Plex Pass on the viewing account, or Remote Watch Pass on the viewing account. Plex defines remote playback as streaming when the viewer is not on the same local network as the server. Under Plex’s stated policy, an administrator’s Plex Pass permits other users of that server to stream remotely.

Plex says the requirement applies to personal movies, TV, and other video—not music in Plexamp or photos in Plex Photos. Its March 19, 2025 announcement also says the requirement expanded to additional apps and platforms on April 29, 2026. The exact apps affected and subscription details can change; consult Plex’s remote playback support information and its policy update for current details. This is a rule about remote video playback on affected apps, not a claim that all local viewing or every Plex feature requires a subscription.

Which setup makes sense for you?

What matters to you Plex Jellyfin
Remote personal video On affected apps, Plex documents subscription routes for remote playback; the applicable route depends on the server admin or viewing account. Remote access depends on your network configuration and user permissions.
Existing media folders Your existing Plex setup can continue to use its configured media. Libraries can point to existing folders and multiple paths; moving the files is not inherently required.
Users and watched status Plex has an opt-in watch-state and rating sync feature with stated requirements, but it is not a direct Jellyfin migration. Jellyfin documents third-party API scripts for transferring watched status and users; check each script’s behavior.
Metadata and artwork Your current Plex catalog is already set up there. Jellyfin builds its own catalog; scan and review matches and custom choices rather than assuming a full import.
