Connecting compatible mesh nodes with Ethernet can improve the link between them: the nodes send backhaul traffic over cable instead of using Wi-Fi for that hop. Your phones, laptops and other clients still connect wirelessly. The result can be a more reliable connection at a distant node and more wireless capacity for clients—but it is not a guaranteed speed boost, and the outcome depends on the equipment, cabling and network layout.
What “less wireless” means in a mesh network
Mesh systems have two kinds of connections to think about: the links from devices to a nearby node, and the link that carries traffic between mesh nodes. That second link is called the backhaul. ASUS defines backhaul as the underlying data connection between nodes in a mesh system, or between a node and the router; it can be wired or wireless (ASUS support).

With wireless backhaul, nodes exchange network traffic over Wi-Fi. With Ethernet backhaul, that inter-node traffic travels over cable instead. Ethernet does not make the mesh clients wired: they continue to use Wi-Fi to reach their node.

A wireless node-to-node hop uses radio capacity that may otherwise be available to client devices. Moving that hop to Ethernet can also avoid a weak wireless link between nodes, which is especially relevant when nodes are far apart or their wireless connection is poor. ASUS recommends considering a wired connection in those conditions (ASUS AiMesh guidance).

TP-Link says its EasyMesh wired-backhaul setup provides a faster, more stable connection between nodes and can improve network performance and reliability (TP-Link EasyMesh guide, updated June 11, 2026). That is vendor guidance, not a universal measured result. There is no established percentage that applies to every home: wiring may make little difference if wireless backhaul was already strong or another part of the connection is limiting speed.
Check compatibility before running cable
Wired backhaul requires support from the specific mesh hardware and, in some cases, its firmware. Do not assume that every device in a product family—or every node from the same brand—can use Ethernet in the same way.

- Cat 6 performance at a Cat5e price but with higher bandwidth
- High Performance Cat6, 30 AWG, RJ45 Ethernet Patch Cable provides universal connectivity for LAN network components such as PCs,computer servers, printers, routers, switch boxes, network media players,NAS,VoIP phones
- Jadaol cat6 standard cable support Cat8 and Cat7 network and provides performance of up to 250 MHz 10Gbps and is suitable for 10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX (Fast Ethernet), 1000BASE-T/1000BASE-TX (Gigabit Ethernet) and 10GBASE-T (10-Gigabit Ethernet)
- UTP(Unshielded Twisted Pair) patch cable with RJ45 gold-plated Connectors and are made of 100% bare copper wire, ensure minimal noise and interference
- The unique flat cable shape allows for a cleaner and safer installation. You can easily and seamlessly make the cable run along walls, follow edges & corners or even make it completely invisible by sliding it under a carpet.
- TP-Link EasyMesh: Both the main router and satellite must support Ethernet backhaul. For compatible devices already joined to EasyMesh, TP-Link says to connect a LAN port on the main router to an Ethernet port on the satellite. The router interface may show an Ethernet icon; if the cable is unplugged, the system falls back to wireless backhaul. See the EasyMesh instructions.
- TP-Link Deco: Set up the units wirelessly first, then connect them by Ethernet. The correct wiring depends on whether the system is in Router mode or Access Point mode. A network can also mix wired and wireless Deco nodes. Follow the Deco wiring instructions for the mode you use.
- Google Nest Wifi and Google Wifi: Google documents hardwiring supported router devices, but Nest Wifi points have no Ethernet port and cannot be hardwired. Check the exact device combination and follow Google’s hardwiring instructions.
Wire the nodes using the right topology
The physical connection is not the only detail that matters; the required port and network layout can vary by system and operating mode.

For TP-Link EasyMesh routers
- Confirm that both the main router and satellite support Ethernet backhaul and have joined the EasyMesh network.
- Connect a LAN port on the main router to an Ethernet port on the satellite.
- Check the router interface for the Ethernet backhaul indicator. If you disconnect the cable, the system should fall back to wireless backhaul.
TP-Link’s EasyMesh guide describes this arrangement.

- Wide Compatibility: With the RJ45 Connector, network cable can be perfectly compatible with computers, laptops, modems, routers, PS5, X-Box and other networking devices. It can also be fully backward compatible with Cat7, Cat6e, Cat6, Cat5e, Cat5
For TP-Link Deco units
- Complete initial setup while the Deco units are connected wirelessly.
- In Router mode, connect each satellite to the main Deco’s LAN port, or to a switch connected to that LAN port.
- In Access Point mode, use the wiring options in the Deco guide; do not assume Router-mode wiring applies.
For Google mesh devices
Google advises completing setup before connecting other devices in its documented arrangement. Use the Google hardwiring instructions for the exact Nest Wifi or Google Wifi combination. A Nest Wifi point cannot be wired because it has no Ethernet port.
Account for cable, port and switch limits
An Ethernet cable cannot make a link faster than the ports and other components on its path. Google says Nest Wifi and Google Wifi support Ethernet at 10/100/1000 Mbps and recommends Cat 5e or Cat 6 for internet speeds above 100 Mbps. Google also notes that a connection may drop to 100 or 10 Mbps if a component on the path does not support a higher rate (Google troubleshooting guidance). Check the ratings of the mesh ports, switch ports and upstream equipment as well as the cable.

A switch is optional. It can provide extra Ethernet ports when the router or node does not have enough, but the supported placement depends on the mesh system. Google recommends an unmanaged switch for its supported configurations. Its instructions for managed switches call for disabling Spanning Tree Protocol and forwarding BPDUs when STP is disabled to avoid some routing and loop issues; those are Google-specific directions, not a rule to apply to every mesh system. See Google’s switch guidance.

- Start with the node location: Ethernet is most promising when a node’s wireless link to the main unit is weak, or when a suitable cable run already reaches its location.
- Verify support: Check the exact node and router models, firmware and operating mode—not just the brand name.
- Check the whole Ethernet path: Confirm that each port, switch and cable can handle the link rate you need. A faster-rated cable does not upgrade a slower port.
- Follow the system’s wiring rules: Confirm which LAN port to use and whether the setup differs between Router and Access Point modes.
- Measure your own result: Compare performance near the wired node before and after, under similar conditions. Without measurements for your specific layout, a speed increase cannot be assumed.
There is no controlled, cross-vendor figure establishing a typical speed gain from Ethernet backhaul. The practical benefit depends on the existing wireless hop and the slowest component in the path; vendor claims about improved speed or stability should not be mistaken for a guaranteed result in every home.
