The Galaxy Z Fold8 shows how compelling a phone can look when its screens dominate the front. It also highlights what a visible bezel can contribute: a clear frame for the display, a place to rest your fingers, and a little separation between your grip and the touch-sensitive image. Those are design preferences, not proof that older phones were objectively better.
What “better with bezels” really means
A bezel is the border between a display and the phone’s outer edge. Shrinking that border makes the screen look more expansive, but it also removes a visual and physical boundary. For some people, that boundary makes a phone feel easier to hold and use: there is a clearer place to grip, and the image feels framed rather than stretched to the edges.

That is the appeal of bezels—not simply nostalgia for older hardware. A phone is both a screen and an object you hold. The balance between those roles is subjective, and the available sources do not establish that most people prefer prominent bezels or that bezel thickness alone determines comfort.
What Samsung is optimizing for in the Galaxy Z Fold8
Samsung specifies a 5.5-inch cover screen and a 7.6-inch main screen for the Galaxy Z Fold8. Its design story describes proportions intended to feel familiar and support a natural grip width, alongside comfortable edges, easier opening, and a slimmer visual profile. These are Samsung’s design goals, not independent findings that every user will find the Fold8 comfortable. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8 product page and its design story set out the company’s specifications and rationale.

That tradeoff is easy to see in a foldable. The large inner display makes the device useful for more than a conventional phone-sized screen, while the cover screen keeps a narrower, familiar form available when the phone is closed. An independent Tom’s Guide hands-on preview published July 22, 2026 described the device as light and noted minimized black bars on the main display. That is one reviewer’s impression, not a controlled comparison of comfort or a survey of users.
Why a bigger-looking screen still needs edge rules
Reducing the physical border does not remove the software problem of distinguishing an intentional tap from a hand resting near the edge. Samsung’s One UI layout guidance recommends margins of at least 24 dp on both sides in relevant layouts to avoid conflicts with curved edges or corners. It also describes reject and grip zones that can block some accidental edge, palm, or three-finger touches. Samsung Developer’s grid-system guidance shows how interface design compensates for edge interactions.

This guidance is about designing usable interfaces, not a recommendation that every phone needs thicker bezels. It does, however, make an important distinction: a nearly borderless appearance is not the same thing as an interaction surface that needs no boundaries. Some boundaries are handled through layout and touch filtering; others can come from the phone’s physical frame.

- More visible display: Narrow borders make the screen feel visually dominant. That can suit reading, multitasking, and content that benefits from a larger uninterrupted area.
- A stronger visual frame: A bezel can make the display’s edges easier to read as edges, rather than as content that continues to the sides.
- A distinct gripping area: A border can offer a little separation between fingers and active screen. Whether that improves handling depends on the phone’s shape, software touch rejection, and how a person holds it.
- Different content tradeoffs: A large, edge-dominant display may feel immersive, while a more contained screen can feel deliberate. The sources do not provide a controlled comparison showing which design is better for one-handed use, video, or reading.
Why the Fold8 does not prove one design is best
The Fold8 is an example of a design direction: emphasize display area, keep the device visually slim, and manage edge interactions through software and product shaping. Samsung’s own product information and design explanation support that account; they do not demonstrate that minimizing bezels improves comfort for everyone. Nor do the cited sources establish a population-wide preference for older, thicker-framed phones.

- SLIM, CLEAR PROTECTION WITH MAGNETIC FIT: The Clear Magnet Case keeps the original design of your Galaxy Z Fold8 visible, while adding a layer of everyday protection. The smooth edges and slim profile make it comfortable to hold and easy to slip in and out of your pocket.

So the most defensible case for bezels is also the most personal one. If a visible frame helps a phone feel contained and gives your hand a clearer boundary, you may prefer it even while appreciating what a nearly edge-to-edge foldable screen makes possible. The Fold8 can be impressive without making that preference irrational.
