The “one thing” in Derek Malcolm’s September 27, 2026 How-To Geek article (syndicated by Yahoo Tech) was his decision to assemble and wall-mount a large ambient light rejecting (ALR) screen himself. The near-miss was physical and maddening rather than dangerous. The screen’s aluminum finishing edges cut his fingers, tensioning the screen was slow and fiddly, and getting the image aligned for a ultra short throw (UST) projector was unforgiving. He still likes the picture the screen produces.
What the screen was
Malcolm’s setup pairs a BenQ SNS21 100-inch Fresnel ALR screen with a UST projector. The ALR design is meant to reduce the effect of room light on the image. This is the screen he used, not a recommendation that it is the best option. Because UST fit depends on projector geometry, confirm that a given screen is designed for your projector before you buy it.

Why assembly cut him
Aluminum finishing edges
Malcolm reports that the aluminum edges of this screen cut his fingers during assembly, even though the screen came with cotton gloves. His account does not establish that any glove type prevents these cuts, and he does not say whether other screens have the same edges. Treat the cut risk as something he experienced with this product, not a general finding about ALR screens.

Fitting the screen’s nearly two dozen spring-loaded tension screws was the most laborious part of the build by his description. Each one has to be set so the surface stays even, and that takes patience and repeated adjustment.

Hoisting and improvised tools
A helper matters when lifting a screen this size onto a wall. Malcolm improvised with clamps and a power drill during the mounting. The article does not endorse any particular tool, and it does not set out professional lifting requirements, so plan for an extra person and check the manufacturer’s instructions for handling guidance.
Why UST projectors make alignment unforgiving
A UST projector sits just inches below the screen and throws the light up at a steep angle. In Malcolm’s explanation, that geometry makes the screen’s level and flatness especially consequential. He also says that keystone correction, which is often used to square up a skewed image, can degrade the picture or cause artifacts and light spill. This is his explanation in a first-person technology article. It is not a measurement or a statement from an independent engineer or manufacturer, so treat it as a plausible account rather than a verified specification.

What he would do differently
Malcolm says he would pay for professional assembly and mounting next time. He also notes that some specialist shops align UST images, and he suggests looking for local home-theater shops, which he believes may be better equipped for complicated UST screens. His article does not name a specific installer for the service.

- Does the installer handle UST image alignment, and is it included in the quoted price or billed separately?
- Have they assembled this specific screen model, including the tensioning step?
- Who supplies the mounting hardware, and what wall types do they cover?
- Will they confirm the final level, flatness and keystone setting with your projector before they leave?
Wall-mounted ALR or motorized floor-rising ALR
Malcolm says a motorized floor-rising ALR screen is the alternative he would consider if his budget allowed. The comparison below uses only what the article describes. It is not a controlled test of image quality, and the article provides no verified specifications across models.
| Factor | Wall-mounted ALR (his BenQ setup) | Motorized floor-rising ALR |
|---|---|---|
| Assembly burden | Substantial by his account: frame assembly, aluminum edges, nearly two dozen tension screws | Arrives as a finished unit, per the article |
| Wall drilling and mounting | Required for mounting; a helper is important for hoisting | Not required; the screen avoids wall mounting |
| Placement | On the wall, at a fixed height | Rises from a cabinet on the floor |
| Fit with UST projector geometry | Level and flatness matter closely, per the author’s explanation | Not stated in the article |
What the prices do and do not tell you

Fastener design as a buying factor
The article also suggests that screen designs with easier-to-reach fasteners are worth considering. It cites an AWOL Vision screen with bowed leaf-spring fasteners as the example, and it mentions Elite Screens and Vividstorm as other brands in the same discussion without comparing them. If you expect to adjust or re-tension a screen over time, check how the fasteners are accessed before you buy.

- Choose DIY only if you have a second adult, a sturdy wall, and the patience to set many tension points.
- Expect cut risk from exposed aluminum edges, and handle the frame slowly.
- Plan for a UST alignment check before you call the job finished, because keystone correction is a poor fix for a tilted or uneven screen by the author’s account.
- If the setup needs to be right the first time, a professional installer or a floor-rising screen removes the most demanding steps.
