Google Docs can now open, edit, comment on and share .md and .markdown files without converting them into Google Docs files. For Obsidian users, that creates a practical two-part workflow: keep the source note in a local Markdown vault, then use Docs as a collaborative and AI-assisted editing surface when a team needs to work on it.
Google Workspace announced the feature on October 5, 2026. The rollout is gradual, taking up to 15 days, and is intended for both Workspace customers and personal Google accounts.

What Google Docs now does with Obsidian files
An Obsidian vault is made from ordinary Markdown text files. Previously, sharing one with people who work in Docs usually meant exporting, pasting or converting the note. With native Markdown support, you can upload the original file to Drive and open it in Docs while it remains a Markdown file.

Google says the open document keeps its Markdown identity and displays an .md label. The rendered view makes headings, links and tables readable without asking collaborators to edit raw syntax. Docs then adds familiar sharing, comments and real-time collaboration controls.

This is not a replacement for Obsidian’s local-note model. It is a collaboration layer beside it: the same text file can be edited in Docs for a group task and reopened in Obsidian when you need your local links, vault structure or preferred Markdown tools.
How to open and collaborate on an Obsidian note
- Upload the source file. In Google Drive, upload the
.mdor.markdownfile from your Obsidian vault. Upload a copy if you want an untouched local original. - Open it in Google Docs. Select the uploaded file and choose the Docs opening option. Google says the file remains Markdown rather than becoming a separate Google Docs-format document.
- Use the rendered document. Read the formatted headings, links and tables, then use Docs comments and sharing to collect feedback or make joint edits.
- Return to your vault. Reopen the Markdown file in Obsidian or another Markdown editor when you need the local, linked-note workflow. Keep track of which copy is authoritative if several people edit separate copies.
The feature is rolling out over a window of up to 15 days from Google’s October 5 announcement. If the option is missing, your account may not have received the rollout yet; check again after the window rather than assuming the file is unsupported.

Native opening versus Markdown conversion tools
Docs has long offered ways to translate Markdown into or out of a Google Docs document. Those tools are different from the new native-file workflow.

Google documents support for common syntax including headings, links, italics, bold and strikethrough. A conversion operation can produce a new representation; native opening is intended to let you work with the Markdown file itself.

Where Gemini fits
Gemini in Docs can draft and refine writing using information from Drive, Chat, Gmail and the web. Google also documents a feature that can match the writing style of an existing file, provided the account has an eligible Google Workspace or Google AI plan.
That puts an AI assistant next to a Markdown note instead of requiring a manual format change before drafting. A note stored in Drive can be part of the information you make available to Gemini, but Google does not say that every Obsidian vault, linked note or plugin-generated asset is automatically indexed. Treat Drive access and your account’s Gemini eligibility as prerequisites, and verify the sources Gemini cites before accepting a rewrite.

A safe AI editing pattern
- Open the Markdown note in Docs and confirm that the correct file is displayed.
- Ask Gemini for a focused task, such as restructuring a section or producing an outline, rather than an unrestricted rewrite of the entire vault.
- Review the draft in Docs and use comments to mark decisions for collaborators.
- Check the resulting Markdown in a local editor before merging it back into your Obsidian vault, especially if the note contains links, embeds or syntax beyond basic Markdown.
What is preserved, and what can be lost
Native support does not provide full Obsidian feature parity. Google’s Help Center warns that editing an .md file can change or remove several presentation features:
- Smart chips may become ordinary text or links.
- Web formatting, including HTML, may become plain text.
- Font colors, highlights and text alignment are removed.
- Other Obsidian-specific behavior is not guaranteed by the Markdown file format.
Google says version history can restore the original if an edit damages formatting. Make a backup before a major collaborative pass anyway, and inspect the result in Obsidian afterward. The available documentation does not establish preservation of Obsidian plugins, graph views, automatic vault-wide indexing or every embedded asset, so test those elements in a copy of your own vault.

Questions to check before adopting the workflow
- Which copy is authoritative? Decide whether the Drive file or the local vault is the master before several people begin editing.
- Does the note use more than basic Markdown? Test HTML, chips, colored text, alignment, embeds and plugin-created content in a duplicate.
- Is Gemini available on your account? Confirm that your Workspace or Google AI plan includes the feature and that the file is accessible in Drive.
- Has the rollout reached you? The announced deployment can take up to 15 days, so the native opening option may not appear immediately.
For plain Markdown notes that need team review, the change removes a frustrating conversion step. For a complex Obsidian vault, Docs is best treated as a temporary editing and collaboration surface, with a local check before changes return to the vault.
