The SilverStone FLP01 is the clearest answer for anyone who wants a modern gaming PC that looks like a late-1980s or early-1990s beige desktop. Unlike a restored vintage chassis, it was designed around current components: SilverStone demonstrated a full-size ATX motherboard, Intel Core Ultra 7 265K processor, GeForce RTX 4060 Ti graphics card, full-size power supply, liquid cooling and modern storage inside it.
What the FLP01 actually is
The FLP01 began as an April Fools-style concept and moved toward retail as a purpose-built retro case. Its horizontal beige shell recalls NEC-era and 1990s desktop computers, while the front uses faux floppy-drive-style panels to disguise optical-drive and front-I/O functions. The result is period styling without requiring a collector-grade original machine.

Tom’s Hardware summarized the idea as “Old on the outside but thoroughly modern within, making sleeper PC building easy.” TechSpot described the appearance as loosely modeled after systems such as the NEC PC-9800 series. Those references explain the visual target, but the internal design is intended for contemporary hardware rather than period parts.
Can it handle a modern gaming build?
Yes, within the published clearance limits. The demonstration used a full-size ATX board, a standard full-size PSU, liquid cooling and a discrete graphics card. Reported limits are approximately 300 mm for GPU length and 138 mm for CPU-cooler height. Check the exact dimensions of your chosen card, radiator, pump, tubing and power connectors before ordering; a card that fits by length can still conflict with a front radiator or cable bend.

FLP01 fit checklist
- Use an ATX, microATX or Mini-ITX board only if the final product specification confirms that format for your region.
- Keep the graphics card at or below the reported 300 mm limit, allowing extra room for front-mounted hardware and power cables.
- Choose a CPU cooler no taller than about 138 mm unless SilverStone’s current specification lists a revision.
- Plan radiator placement around the case’s actual mounting points rather than assuming every liquid-cooling size will fit.
- Confirm PSU length, modular-plug clearance and front-panel connector routing during the build.
FLP01 versus the roomier FLP02
The FLP02 (SST-FLP02) takes the same beige-retro direction into a conventional ATX mid-tower. It supports ATX, microATX, Mini-ITX and SSI-CEB boards, graphics cards up to 386 mm, CPU coolers up to 182 mm, and top radiators up to 360 mm. It also has three genuine external 5.25-inch bays rather than only decorative front panels.

Choose the FLP01 when the horizontal desktop silhouette is the priority and your component list fits its tighter clearances. Choose the FLP02 when you need a long current graphics card, a tall air cooler, a 360 mm top radiator or actual 5.25-inch hardware.

What about the FLP03?
Boing Boing reported that the FLP03 supports microATX and Mini-ITX boards, three external 5.25-inch bays, and internal 3.5-inch and 2.5-inch drive mounts. Japan timing was indicated for February or March 2026, so availability should be treated as region-dependent until a local listing confirms stock, warranty coverage and shipping.

A used beige ATX case can deliver stronger period authenticity, especially if its original vents, badges and drive doors matter more than convenience. It can also be the cheaper route when a suitable local machine is available. However, inspect it as a fabrication project, not a ready-to-build enclosure.

Typical vintage-case work
- Clean accumulated dust, nicotine residue and corrosion; yellowed plastic may not return to its original color.
- Check for missing screws, drive rails, cracked bezels and warped panels.
- Measure the motherboard tray, power-supply opening, graphics-card path and cooler clearance before buying parts.
- Add or enlarge intake and exhaust openings if the original airflow was designed for low-heat period hardware.
- Expect drilling, cutting, replacement standoffs or a custom rear I/O panel when modern parts do not align.
- Trace nonstandard front-panel wiring and replace unsafe switches or brittle cables.
These modifications can produce the most convincing sleeper build, but each case is a one-off. The FLP01 and FLP02 trade some authenticity for known modern compatibility and a shorter installation path.
Price and availability details to verify
SilverStone’s reported FLP01 launch plan was about JPY 19,800, converted to approximately $130 in 2024 coverage. That is a planned regional figure, not a guaranteed current worldwide street price. Amazon stock, seller, shipping cost, taxes and warranty can change by country, so check the live listing before treating the case as available or budgeting a build around it.

The FLP02’s cited $249.99 figure came from a retailer snapshot in 2026 and should likewise be confirmed at checkout. FLP03 availability is especially dependent on region because the reported launch timing focused on Japan.
