Plex is more than a library grid and a play button. The features that changed how I use it are Discover for finding where a title is available, Skip TV Show Intros for removing repetitive openings, Downloads for travel, and hardware-accelerated streaming for reducing server strain. Watch Together can still synchronize a group viewing session, but Plex is retiring it on most platforms during its new-experience rollout. Treat that one as transitional rather than permanent.
The Plex features worth turning on
These tools solve different problems: finding content, getting through episodes faster, watching with other people, viewing your own files offline, and making a server transcode efficiently. Their availability depends on your Plex Pass status, the app you use, server hardware, network conditions, and sometimes your country.

| Feature | Main benefit | Where it works | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Discover | Search for a title and see where it can be watched | Supported Plex apps; catalog and outbound behavior vary by region | Availability differs by client and geography |
| Watch Together | Synchronizes playback for a group | Personal media and Plex’s free Movies & TV service; web app remains available for the foreseeable future | Support is ending on most platforms during the new-experience rollout |
| Skip TV Show Intros | Identifies episode openings and adds a Skip Intro control | Playback apps using a server with intro analysis enabled | Requires Plex Pass and detection is not perfect |
| Downloads | Stores personal media for offline playback | Supported Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, and Windows apps | Requires an active Plex Pass; ad-supported streaming titles are excluded |
| Hardware-accelerated streaming | Uses compatible hardware to transcode faster and with less power | Plex Media Server with supported hardware or processor | Results depend on the server, source files, and transcoder settings |
| Remote streaming | Allows playback outside your home network | Clients connecting to an externally reachable Plex server | Bandwidth, upload speed, server capacity, and transcoding determine reliability |
Use Discover as a “where can I watch this?” dashboard
Discover searches your Plex library and can show whether a title is available through other services. Instead of opening several apps one by one, you start with the film or series in Plex and follow the available viewing option.
What to expect
- Rows, catalog coverage, and the behavior when you open another service vary by app.
- Availability is geographic, so a title shown in one country may not appear in another.
- In supported clients, you can pin Discover as a source for quicker access.
Discover is therefore a discovery and routing tool, not a promise that Plex supplies every stream itself. If a service or title is missing, check the same search in another Plex client before assuming the catalog is unavailable everywhere.

Watch Together is convenient—but now a moving target
Watch Together keeps playback synchronized for people watching personal media or Plex’s free Movies & TV service. A pause, seek, or resume is reflected for the group, making it useful when everyone is in different homes.
Plex posted this warning on February 25, 2025: “Note (2025-02-25): As we debut our new Plex experience, we are ending support for some features we’ve grown to love, like Watch Together.” Plex also says the web app remains available “for the foreseeable future.” That means a session may work on the web while disappearing from a television or mobile app after an update.
Before starting a session
- Use the web app if a client no longer offers the feature.
- Confirm that everyone can access the same personal item or free Movies & TV title.
- Expect performance to vary with the server’s hardware, internet connection, disk speed, and the number of streams.
Because platform support is changing, do not plan an important event around Watch Together without checking the current client first.

Plex can analyze episode openings and place a Skip Intro control over an identified intro. It is most valuable for series you watch repeatedly, where skipping the same sequence dozens of times adds up to real time saved.

Requirements and limits
- Intro analysis is a server-side Plex Pass feature.
- The account playing the episode also needs Plex Pass, unless it qualifies through the documented Plex Home arrangement.
- Plex warns that detection “may not be able to detect intros for every show perfectly.” Unusual edits, cold opens, recaps, or versions with different cuts can prevent a match.
After analysis completes, the control appears only when Plex recognizes the opening. A missing button does not necessarily mean the feature is broken; the episode may simply have an intro the detector could not classify.
Download your own library before you travel
Downloads turn personal media on a Plex Media Server into offline files inside supported Plex apps. This is useful on flights, trains, and hotel networks where streaming is unreliable or expensive.
What is supported
- An active Plex Pass is required.
- Supported apps include Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, and Windows.
- The source must be personal media from your Plex Media Server.
- Plex’s free ad-supported Movies & Shows catalog and live-TV services are not eligible for download.
Plan downloads while you still have a dependable connection. The server must prepare and transfer each item, so large files can take time and consume storage on the device. If a title is absent from the download option, first check that it is from your own server and that the app and account meet the requirements.
Hardware acceleration can make transcoding less painful
When a client cannot direct-play a file, Plex may transcode it into a compatible format. Plex Pass enables hardware acceleration when the server has compatible hardware or a supported processor. Plex describes the result as potentially faster and more power-efficient than relying entirely on the CPU.

- Ask to control your TV with your voice, and quickly cast your photos, videos, music and more from your phone, tablet, or PC to your TV with Chromecast built in
- Built-in Virtual Assistant – just press the mic button on the remote to get what you want
- Built-in content and entertainment including YouTube, Play Movies & TV, and more
- Support for thousands of Apps on the Play Store
- 2K resolution TV streaming
Check these conditions before expecting a benefit
- The server must contain supported graphics hardware or a compatible processor.
- Hardware acceleration must be enabled in the server’s transcoder settings.
- The source codec, target device, subtitle mode, and number of simultaneous streams still affect the workload.
Hardware acceleration is not a guarantee that every file will play smoothly. Monitor whether the server is actually using the hardware path and compare behavior with the same file played by direct play. A weak upload connection or an incompatible subtitle burn-in can remain the bottleneck.
Remote streaming: useful outside home, dependent on the whole connection
Remote streaming lets an authorized client reach your home Plex server from another network. A full Plex Pass includes benefits associated with remote streaming; Plex also offers a Remote Watch Pass focused on remote streaming rather than the broader Plex Pass package.
Playback quality depends on the server’s ability to read and transcode the file, the home network’s upload capacity, the viewer’s download connection, and the route between them. Start with a lower remote quality setting if playback repeatedly pauses, then determine whether the server is transcoding or the connection is saturated.
Choosing a TV client
Plex supports Amazon Fire TV. That makes an Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K a plausible television client for Plex playback, but selecting that specific model is an inference from platform support, not a Plex endorsement. Check the current Plex app compatibility and the stick’s video-format support before buying, especially if your library contains high-bitrate or 4K files.
Quick Recap
A practical order for enabling these features
- Open Discover and pin it if your preferred Plex app supports pinned sources.
- Confirm your Plex Pass status before configuring Skip TV Show Intros, Downloads, or hardware acceleration.
- On the server, allow time for intro analysis and verify the Skip Intro control on several episodes.
- Install a supported mobile or desktop app and download a short personal recording as a travel test.
- Check the server’s hardware and transcoder settings, then test one file that normally requires transcoding.
- For remote use, test from a different network before relying on it for a trip or group session.
- Check Watch Together in the exact client you plan to use; the web app is the fallback Plex currently says will remain available for the foreseeable future.
