Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Short answer: An internet outage does not necessarily stop smart home devices from working. Devices controlled over a functioning local network or hub may keep responding, while cloud-dependent controls and remote access can fail. But the title alone does not provide the results of a specific 20-device test, so no device-by-device verdict can be reported without the actual test notes.
What an “internet unplugged” test can—and cannot—tell you
Unplugging the internet is not the same as turning off the router, disabling Wi-Fi, or cutting power. If the router and home network stay on, devices may still communicate with one another locally even though they cannot reach online services. If the router goes down, local Wi-Fi and hub connections may disappear too. A power cut is a separate test, and battery-backed devices may behave differently from devices that need mains power.

For a useful account of more than 20 devices, each result needs to identify the outage condition, the control path, and the function tested. “The light still worked” might mean its wall switch worked, not that its app, voice command, schedule, or remote access still worked.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

- Router or Wi-Fi down: Does the device communicate directly, through a hub, or only over the home network?
- Power cut: Is the device itself powered, and does any hub or network equipment it depends on have backup power?
- Action tested: Was it app control, a voice command, an automation, a notification, remote access, or the device’s basic operation?
Without those conditions and the observed outcomes, general product documentation cannot establish which particular devices in the author’s home continued working.

Why some smart home devices keep working offline
The deciding factor is often where communication and control logic run. Home Assistant says devices using local protocols—including Zigbee, Z-Wave, Matter, Thread, and ESPHome—do not need internet access for device communication. By contrast, an integration that requires a brand’s cloud cannot reach the device through that service during an internet outage. That distinction concerns communication; individual integrations and features can still have their own online dependencies. Home Assistant’s offline-use FAQ explains the distinction.
A device can therefore remain reachable locally while losing cloud-based features. Likewise, a product may continue its basic operation without supporting app control, voice control, notifications, or automations. Check each function separately instead of assigning one blanket “offline” verdict to a device.

What the major control paths mean during an outage
Local Wi-Fi or LAN control
A phone and a device may be able to communicate over the home network without internet service, provided the router and relevant local services remain available. IKEA says its smart products can still be controlled by a remote or app during an internet interruption when the phone stays connected to the same Wi-Fi. That route is unavailable if the Wi-Fi router is disconnected or restarted, according to IKEA’s support guidance.
Hub-based Zigbee, Thread, or Z-Wave
These protocols can support local device communication, but the hub or controller still needs to be present and working. A locally controlled sensor or switch may continue to communicate with its hub during an internet outage; any feature that depends on an external cloud may not. If the router, hub, or power supply is lost, the result can change.

Matter over Wi-Fi, Thread, or Ethernet
Matter is designed for local connectivity, but it is not a way around the need for local infrastructure. The Connectivity Standards Alliance says Matter uses Bluetooth Low Energy for setup and Wi-Fi, Thread, or Ethernet to connect devices, with an in-home Matter controller for local control. Controlling a Matter device while away from home requires internet connectivity and an internet-connected controller. See the Connectivity Standards Alliance Matter FAQs.
Cloud-based control and remote access
If an app or integration sends commands through a vendor’s cloud, loss of internet service can interrupt that control route even while the device remains powered. Away-from-home access also requires a connection beyond the home network. A device being locally reachable does not prove its cloud features are available, and a cloud outage does not necessarily mean its physical controls or local routines have stopped.

Direct physical controls
A wall switch, button, or device-side control is a separate path from app and cloud control. Whether it remains usable depends on the product and whether power is available; an internet test alone does not answer that question.

Offline does not mean every feature works
Schedules and fallback behavior can matter as much as connectivity. Netatmo says its Thermostat and Valves continue controlling heating according to the current weekly schedule or last setpoint during an internet outage. The same support article says anticipation/Auto-Adapt is disabled because outdoor temperature readings are unavailable. This is a product-specific example, not a rule for all thermostats. Netatmo’s support article also distinguishes internet or Wi-Fi loss from a power cut.

Can Alexa voice control work without internet?
Sometimes, depending on the devices and connection. Amazon’s Alexa developer documentation lists BLE mesh, Matter over Wi-Fi, Matter over Thread, and Zigbee as local connectivity options. It says a local connection between an Echo and a device can allow voice interactions while internet or cloud infrastructure is down. That is conditional guidance—not a guarantee that every Echo, skill, command, or smart-home setup works offline. See Amazon’s local connectivity documentation.
How to report results from a 20-device test
A clear result should be recorded per device and per action, rather than as a single working/not-working label. Use a table like this and fill it only with observations from the actual test:
| Device | Outage condition | Control path | Action tested | Observed result | Schedule or fallback |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Device name and model | Internet only, router/Wi-Fi down, or power loss | Cloud, local Wi-Fi/LAN, hub, Bluetooth, or physical control | App, voice, automation, notification, remote access, or basic operation | What happened in the test | What continued, if anything |
Also note whether the router stayed powered, whether Wi-Fi remained available, which hub or controller was running, and whether a phone was on the same local network. Those details let readers distinguish an internet outage from a home-network failure and understand what a result actually demonstrates.
What to check if offline operation matters to you
- Look for explicit local-control support for the function you care about; protocol support alone does not guarantee every feature works offline.
- Identify which controller, hub, router, or local service must remain powered and connected.
- Check whether schedules and automations run locally or rely on a cloud service.
- Test the specific outage you want to prepare for: internet loss, router failure, Wi-Fi loss, or power loss.
- Try each important action—app, voice, automation, and physical control—separately, and record the result.
Home Assistant describes Home Assistant Green as its official plug-and-play smart home hub and notes optional Connect ZBT-2 accessories for Zigbee, Thread, and Matter in its FAQ. A controller can be part of a local setup, but buying one by itself does not guarantee offline operation: device compatibility, network availability, and feature-level behavior still determine the result.
