I Had a D&D Designer Make the Perfect Monster to Torment My Group

To challenge a level-5 Dungeons & Dragons party without simply giving a monster more hit points, Keith Ammann designed the Mooncrow around what that group could—and couldn’t—do. The flying creature used illusions, cold attacks and a rising Armor Class to pressure a party strong in melee but short on ranged attacks and broad spellcasting. In the author’s account of running it, the encounter knocked characters down, consumed healing and spell resources, and kept the players talking afterward. The encounter and its outcome were reported in Polygon-syndicated coverage; they are one table’s experience, not a guarantee that the same design will work for every group.

Why this party needed a different kind of challenge

The request to Ammann was specific: make a moderate challenge for four level-5 characters in a homebrew world under a permanent eclipse, where warmth was scarce and dangerous mutations shaped the setting. The party was good at close combat, but had few ranged options and limited broad spellcasting. A monster that merely charged into melee would play to the group’s strength. Ammann instead built a flying plains hunter that could keep its distance and unsettle its targets.

The result, named the Mooncrow, was described as a Monstrosity, though Fey and Aberration were also considered. Its appearance and habitat fit the campaign’s dark, cold world; its abilities addressed the party’s specific tactical gaps. That connection between setting, creature role and player capabilities is the design’s central idea: choose abilities because they create a meaningful problem for this party, not because a monster needs a longer list of powers.

How the Mooncrow’s abilities put pressure on the group

Illusions create uncertainty

Mirror Image makes it harder to tell which image is the real Mooncrow, helping it survive while complicating player choices. Phantasmal Force targets the party’s Intelligence weakness, while Bane hinders attack rolls. Together, those spells interfere with reliable targeting and effective attacks rather than simply increasing the creature’s damage.

Illusions also create a table-level challenge: players may know that what they see is an illusion even when their characters do not. That gap can be exciting if everyone enjoys uncertainty, but frustrating if it feels like the rules are asking players to ignore what they know. Before using an illusion-heavy enemy, consider how you will describe what characters perceive and how players can test or respond to it.

Defense rises as hit points fall

The Mooncrow’s Ecliptic Veil raises its Armor Class as its hit points are reduced. This pairs stronger defense with declining health instead of simply raising both defenses and hit points together. The design changes how the creature feels as a fight progresses: wounded does not automatically mean easier to hit.

Flight and cold reinforce its role

As a flying hunter, the Mooncrow can exploit a party with few ranged attacks. Some of its attacks deal cold damage, tying its threat to the eclipse-bound setting’s scarce warmth. These details make its tactics and atmosphere part of the same design rather than unrelated decorations.

Why use a flock instead of one powerful enemy?

The Mooncrow was described as CR 2 and intended to hunt in small flocks, not as one large solo monster. The author planned to use five or six against four level-5 characters. According to the Polygon-syndicated article, that plan drew on the 2024 Dungeon Master’s Guide’s stated moderate encounter range of 2,000–3,000 XP for four level-5 characters, with the article applying the guide’s cited 450 XP per CR 2 creature. The same article cites 200 XP for a CR 1 creature. The five-or-six-creature calculation is the article’s application of those figures, not an independently verified rule quotation; treat the budget and calculation as specific to its 2024 rules context.

Multiple lower-CR enemies change the encounter in two important ways. They can threaten several characters and create more tactical decisions, but each additional creature also adds actions and work for the DM. A flock can better express the Mooncrow’s hunting behavior than a single oversized specimen, yet the practical cost is more turns to track and run.

What happened when the author ran the encounter

The author reports that characters were knocked down and the group spent healing and spell resources to get through the fight. The players continued discussing the encounter afterward. That is a useful account of the intended effect—a difficult fight that demanded attention and left an impression—but it is not a controlled test or a promise that the Mooncrow will produce the same result at another table. Party composition, player choices and how the DM runs the illusions can all change the experience.

What DMs can take from the design

  • Start with a party-specific problem. Identify what the characters handle easily and where they have fewer options. Here, flight pressured a melee-focused party with limited ranged attacks.
  • Make the setting do design work. The Mooncrow’s cold damage, hunting role and environment reinforced a world defined by darkness and scarce warmth.
  • Trade durability rather than piling it on. A feature that increases defense as hit points fall changes the fight’s rhythm without simply adding more hit points.
  • Consider how players experience information. Illusions can produce uncertainty, but establish descriptions and opportunities to respond so that the gap between player knowledge and character perception remains engaging.
  • Budget for the DM’s attention. A flock changes action economy and can make a fight more dynamic, but running many enemies takes more work than running one.

Where to read more about Ammann’s monster-design approach

Ammann’s book Remonstered! The Monsters Know What They’re Doing became available October 6, 2026, according to his official site. The revised edition updates tactics to reflect changes in the 2025 Monster Manual; the original book for 2014 fifth-edition rules remains available as well. The publisher, Simon & Schuster, describes the revised hardcover as covering monster design, including challenge, habitat, motivations and customization. See the publisher’s catalog listing. These sources do not establish that the Mooncrow stat block appears in the book.
