Stop counting dashes and spaces: save a reusable code snippet for a fixed comment-header style, or use a dedicated divider extension if you want commands that generate labeled headers and separators. In Visual Studio Code, snippets are built in; the extension route is optional and third-party. A standard formatter is not a substitute for either.
Choose a snippet or a divider extension
The right option depends on what “automate” means for your comments. A snippet reliably inserts a shape you define. A purpose-built extension advertises commands for creating dividers and headers, with configurable length. Neither the documentation reviewed here establishes independent performance comparisons, so choose based on the behavior you need.

Microsoft describes snippets as templates for repeated code patterns. They are useful here because a comment divider is repeated text, but a snippet is not automatically a title-aware layout engine.

A user snippet stores a repeated pattern in a JSON file. VS Code supports multiline snippet bodies, placeholders, language scopes, and variables. The following is a deliberately simple example: it inserts a separator, a title placeholder, and another separator using the active language’s line-comment token.

LINE_COMMENT is a VS Code snippet variable for the current language’s line-comment token, where configured. That helps a shared pattern use the language’s comment marker rather than hard-coding one, but it does not ensure every language has suitable comment configuration. VS Code language configuration defines line and block comment tokens and also affects comment toggling.

What this snippet does—and does not do
The example repeats a fixed number of dashes. It does not measure the title, center it, or make the separators change length to match it. You can edit the repeated text to fit a fixed-width convention, but arbitrary title-aware padding requires suitable additional logic or a tool designed to generate dividers. If using block comments, VS Code also provides BLOCK_COMMENT_START and BLOCK_COMMENT_END snippet variables.
Use a dedicated divider command for generated headers
The Visual Studio Marketplace listing for Comment Divider describes commands to create a main header, create a subheader, and insert a solid line. The listing also describes a configurable divider length and shows 80 as its default. Those are publisher-described features, not independently tested results; extension behavior and availability can change.

If the extension appears suitable, inspect its current Marketplace page for supported editor versions, language examples, installation details, and recent maintenance before relying on it. Use its documented command or shortcut for the header type you need, and adjust the length setting to your convention. This route is a better fit than a basic fixed snippet when you want the tool itself to generate divider formatting around labels.

VS Code offers document and selection formatting, along with format-on-type, format-on-save, and format-on-paste settings when supported by the active formatter. These features format code according to formatter rules. The reviewed documentation does not describe standard formatting as generating decorative comment dividers, so enabling format-on-save alone will not automate their insertion.

Comment toggling is also a different operation: it adds or removes comment syntax for selected code according to the language configuration. It does not create a styled header or calculate a divider length.

Pick the least complicated option that meets the need
- Use a snippet when you want the same personal header shape repeatedly and a fixed-width divider is acceptable.
- Use a divider extension when you want commands for different header types or generated divider lengths; verify the current listing before installing.
- Do not rely on formatting settings to invent decorative separators; they address code formatting, not divider generation.
