Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →A Raspberry Pi can make a useful always-on appliance, but a year-long uptime story only means something when you know what the Pi was doing, which model and software it used, and what “untouched” means. The headline’s claim doesn’t specify those details, so it can’t establish that a particular task or Pi setup will run without maintenance. What it does point to is a practical idea: give hardware you already own one small, continuous job, and design the setup around reliable power, storage, and recovery.
What a year of “untouched” operation does—and doesn’t—tell you
“Untouched” can mean no physical intervention, no manual software updates, or no maintenance of any kind. Those are different claims. A Pi that stays powered and reachable for a year may still have restarted, received updates, or needed attention to its storage or network. Without the task, model, operating system, and maintenance history, uptime alone can’t show how dependable the setup is or whether another Pi will behave the same way.

There is no sufficiently applicable published statistic establishing how long a Raspberry Pi lasts or the odds that one will run untouched for a year. Treat a year-long account as an anecdote about a particular installation, not a lifespan guarantee.

A small device assigned a single, stable role can be easier to understand than a general-purpose computer running many services. If it is already on hand and the task is modest, repurposing it can be a sensible way to keep a service available without dedicating a larger machine. The trade-off is that a small computer still depends on its power supply, storage, network connection, and software being suitable for the job.

Home Assistant is one documented example of an always-on service designed to run on a small device. Its hardware FAQ lists Raspberry Pi, mini PC, NUC, and virtual machine as options for people with suitable hardware or those combining services; it recommends Home Assistant Green for most users seeking a plug-and-play route. That makes a Pi a possible choice, not a universal best choice. Home Assistant’s hardware FAQ
What a Home Assistant Pi setup calls for
These are Home Assistant’s recommendations for its own Raspberry Pi installation, not requirements for every project or evidence of what the headline’s Pi used. Its installation guide recommends a Raspberry Pi 4 or 5 with at least 2 GB of RAM, an A2-class microSD card with at least 32 GB capacity, a suitable power supply, and Ethernet where possible. The guide describes Ethernet as more reliable than Wi-Fi and cautions that some mobile chargers may not provide appropriate power. It recommends Home Assistant OS for most users; the documentation describes it as a minimal embedded operating system that includes Home Assistant Core and Supervisor. - Includes Raspberry Pi 4 4GB Model B with 1.5GHz 64-bit quad-core CPU (4GB RAM)
- Includes Pre-Loaded 32GB EVO+ Micro SD Card (Class 10), USB MicroSD Card Reader
- CanaKit Premium High-Gloss Raspberry Pi 4 Case with Integrated Fan Mount, CanaKit Low Noise Bearing System Fan
- CanaKit 3.5A USB-C Raspberry Pi 4 Power Supply (US Plug) with Noise Filter, Set of Heat Sinks, Display Cable - 6 foot (Supports up to 4K60p)
- CanaKit USB-C PiSwitch (On/Off Power Switch for Raspberry Pi 4)
An A2 card of at least 32 GB is therefore a workload-specific recommendation for this installation—not a guarantee of long life, a universal Pi requirement, or proof of the card used in any year-long setup.
Power and storage are part of uptime
Use an appropriate power supply
A device expected to stay on needs a power source suited to the board and its connected hardware. Raspberry Pi documentation warns that sudden power-downs can contribute to storage corruption. A suitable supply and orderly shutdowns reduce avoidable risks; they cannot guarantee uninterrupted operation. Raspberry Pi computer hardware documentation

Understand what a read-only overlay changes
Raspberry Pi’s overlay filesystem can make the root filesystem read-only while keeping runtime changes in RAM. Changes outside the boot partition are then lost at reboot or power-off. This can help where a project does not need to retain those writes, but it is a poor fit for a service that must persist its database, settings, or other state there. Use it only after identifying what the application writes and where durable data will live. Raspberry Pi configuration documentation
Plan for failures rather than assuming none will happen
The Raspberry Pi bootloader includes a watchdog that can help recover if the operating system fails to start. Its scope is limited: Raspberry Pi documents that the bootloader watchdog stops monitoring once the Arm CPU starts. It is not protection against every operating-system hang or application failure, and it does not replace a recovery plan. Raspberry Pi computer hardware documentation

For an unattended service, decide how you will notice an outage, restore the system, and recover its data. Home Assistant says it makes an automatic backup before each update and has a repair system that flags issues. Those safeguards apply to Home Assistant; they do not prove that an unidentified Pi has backups or self-recovery configured. Home Assistant’s reliability FAQ

“Untouched” doesn’t necessarily mean “up to date”
Home Assistant states: “A new version of Home Assistant is released on the first Wednesday of every month.” A service can keep running while new releases become available, so a device left alone may accumulate updates it has not installed. The release schedule does not establish that updates install automatically on a particular system. For any always-on service, decide whether updates are automatic or manual and how you will review, back up, and recover before applying them. Home Assistant’s reliability FAQ

Local control can reduce dependence on the internet
For Home Assistant, supported local protocols and automations can continue working when the internet connection or a vendor’s cloud service is unavailable. That is a useful property for a home service, but it applies to a supported local setup—not to every smart-home device or every feature. Check whether the specific devices and automations you rely on operate locally before treating internet independence as part of the design. Home Assistant’s reliability FAQ
