The useful idea is a locally running check that decides when the server is unresponsive, then operates a suitably rated power switch. The title’s $5 is a personal framing, not a verified current price or bill of materials.
What the ESP32 is—and is not—watching
There are two separate machines and two different recovery actions in this setup:

- The ESP32’s watchdog timers monitor execution on the ESP32 itself. Espressif’s ESP32 datasheet describes three watchdog timers and configurable actions that include interrupts and resets. Those mechanisms can help recover a wedged controller; they do not establish that a separate home server has frozen. Espressif ESP32 Datasheet
- The server check and power switch are the external recovery layer. Some logic must decide that the server has failed, and a relay or other switch must interrupt power to the server to force a restart. ESPHome documents relay-control actions, but does not prescribe a relay board or establish that any specific board is suitable for a server power supply. ESPHome actions documentation
In other words, an ESP32 reset means the controller restarted; a server power cycle means the monitored machine lost and regained power. A project that does the latter needs a reliable way to distinguish a server fault from a failed connection or a temporary service problem.
Why local ESPHome logic helps
ESPHome automations run on the microcontroller. ESPHome says they continue working if Wi-Fi is down or the MQTT server is unreachable. That means a monitor can make its decision and operate its switch without depending on a Home Assistant automation for every step. ESPHome: Actions, Triggers, Conditions

Home Assistant’s ESPHome integration attempts to reconnect after a connection is lost. But losing that integration connection is not proof that the server itself has frozen: the cause might be Wi-Fi, the network, or the integration path. Home Assistant ESPHome integration
A robust monitor therefore needs to define what “frozen” means for its particular server and what evidence is strong enough to trigger a power interruption. The available documentation establishes local automation and relay actions, but not a validated check sequence, threshold, or timing for this particular build. Treat those decisions as part of the project design rather than as settings guaranteed by ESPHome.

What to decide before switching server power
- What is being tested? A network response, operating-system response, or application response each points to a different kind of failure. A check aimed at one layer may miss trouble at another.
- How will false alarms be limited? A momentary outage or unreachable service should not automatically be treated as a confirmed system freeze. Choose the trigger and recovery behavior for the failure you intend to address.
- Can the switch handle the actual load? Match the relay or other switching hardware to the server’s power supply and the electrical design. ESPHome’s example of controlling a relay is not a rating or safety approval for a particular module.
- What happens after power returns? A power cycle only helps if the server can boot and resume operation afterward. Consider the effect of interrupted writes and the server’s own power-recovery behavior.
- What happens if the controller itself fails? ESP32 watchdogs address faults in the controller’s execution, but a failed controller or switching circuit can still leave the server without the intended recovery.
Alternatives and recovery tools
Use a watchdog on the server where supported
If the server is a Raspberry Pi, Raspberry Pi documentation describes configuring kernel and systemd watchdogs. It notes that systemd’s runtime watchdog is not enabled by default on Raspberry Pi OS Bookworm, so an on-device watchdog should not be assumed to be active without configuration. This approach is specific to supported hardware and operating systems; it is not interchangeable with an external power switch in every failure mode. Raspberry Pi config.txt documentation

Diagnose ESPHome resets rather than assuming their cause
ESPHome’s troubleshooting guide explains crash backtraces for supported chips and warns that long-running component operations can block the main loop, potentially contributing to watchdog resets or Wi-Fi disconnections. Its safe mode can help recover from repeated boot failures by disabling most components. These features help diagnose or recover the ESP32; neither alone proves that the separate server is frozen or restores its power. ESPHome troubleshooting ESPHome safe mode
