I gave a local LLM my Steam library—and it found games Steam’s recommendations missed

A local language model can turn a neglected Steam backlog into a conversation: describe your mood, time available, preferred genres or games to exclude, and receive suggestions limited to titles you own. In my test, that control produced more useful picks for a specific evening than Steam’s general recommendation surfaces. That is a personal comparison, not proof that local AI is more accurate for every player.

What I actually gave the model

“My whole library” can mean several different datasets. The workflow I tested treated ownership as the starting point, then supplied game names and recommendation constraints. It did not magically understand every detail of my account.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Ownership: the titles available to recommend.
  • Context: a prompt such as “I have 90 minutes and want something tense but not a horror game.”
  • Optional signals: playtime, genres, tags, completion status and exclusions.

A surfaced open-source project demonstrates one way to build this list: scan a local Steam installation, ignore non-game software, and resolve Steam AppIDs to names before passing the data to a local model. Other tools synchronize a library through an account or API instead. The input path matters because a model working from installed files may not know about games you own but have never installed.

Why the recommendations felt better for a backlog

Steam is optimized for broad discovery and store navigation. A conversational prompt lets me define the decision I am making right now. I can ask for a short campaign, a familiar comfort game, a title I have barely started, or something unlike the last three games I played.

  • System: AMD Ryzen 5 5500 3.6GHz 6 Cores | AMD B550 Chipset | 8GB DDR4 | 500GB PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD | Windows 11 Home
  • Graphics: AMD Radeon RX 6500 XT 4GB Graphics | 1x HDMI | 1x DisplayPort
  • Connectivity: 4 x USB-A 3.2 | 4 x USB-A 2.0 | 1 x LAN | WiFi 5 | Bluetooth 5.0 | 7.1 Channel Audio
  • Tempered Side Case Panel | Custom RGB Lighting | Keyboard and Mouse

The useful difference is not an “AI” quality guarantee. It is controllability. I can require owned games, set a time limit, exclude multiplayer, ask for variety, and request an explanation tied to tags or previous playtime. The model can also surface an overlooked title instead of repeating the most visible releases.

How the local workflow works

  1. Collect the library. Read local installation manifests or synchronize ownership through an approved account method.
  2. Normalize names. Resolve AppIDs, remove tools and other non-game entries, and keep a stable title list.
  3. Add useful metadata. Playtime, genres, tags and completion state give the model evidence beyond a name.
  4. Run inference locally. Load the chosen model in a desktop runner and keep the recommendation prompt on the machine.
  5. Constrain the request. State mood, available time, platform, exclusions and whether unplayed games should be favored.
  6. Check the result. Confirm that every suggestion is owned and that the explanation matches the actual game.

Local inference does not automatically mean the entire process is offline. Gamekeeper, for example, says a Steam Web API key and a public game-details profile are required for synchronization. SuggestMe describes local storage while still using internet access for library sync and metadata. Separate the model’s processing from the data-ingestion step when evaluating privacy.

What I compared with Steam

I judged the two approaches against practical questions rather than a single accuracy score:

Criterion Conversational local model Steam recommendation surfaces
Owned-only filtering Explicitly enforceable in the prompt and validated against the library Depends on the specific Steam surface and its settings
Mood or time constraints Can be stated in natural language for each session Usually less specific than a custom prompt
Discovery of ignored backlog games Can request unplayed or low-playtime titles Often emphasizes store and behavioral signals
Explanation Can explain a pick, but may invent or misread details More standardized, with less conversational tailoring
Setup Requires data collection, a model runner and suitable hardware Works inside the existing Steam account and client
Privacy Inference can stay local; synchronization may still contact external services Uses Steam’s account and service infrastructure

This is a decision framework, not an independent head-to-head benchmark. No published study in the material available here establishes that local language-model recommendations are more accurate than Steam’s system.

Hardware and model choices

One project’s README lists these optional local-AI configurations. They are project-published estimates, not universal requirements or performance benchmarks.

Model tier Published model size Published hardware guidance
Qwen3.5 4B 2.7 GB 4 GB VRAM, or CPU with 12 GB RAM
Qwen3 8B 5 GB 8 GB VRAM
Qwen2.5 14B 15.7 GB 20+ GB VRAM

A graphics card with 8 GB of VRAM is therefore an optional fit for one of the listed tiers, not a requirement for every setup. Quantization, context length and the rest of the desktop can change actual memory use. Smaller models are generally easier to run; larger ones may follow complicated constraints more reliably, but the project figures do not establish recommendation quality.

What existing tools optimize for

Gamekeeper

Gamekeeper presents an offline Taste Engine and an optional local-LLM chat layer. Its README says the Discover feed covers approximately 60,000 Steam games and that it was tested on a 571-game library. Those are the project’s own claims, not audited scale or performance results. The project also states: “All data stays on your machine. No cloud services, no telemetry.” Treat that as the developer’s privacy claim rather than independent verification.

SuggestMe

SuggestMe offers configurable recommendation modes and filters. That makes it useful when you want repeatable rules rather than an open-ended conversation, while still allowing local storage alongside online synchronization and metadata retrieval.

A direct model prompt

A plain local model gives the most flexibility and the least structure. You must supply clean data, prevent recommendations outside your ownership list, and spot hallucinated descriptions yourself.

Failure modes and fixes

It recommends games you do not own

Provide a machine-readable ownership list and instruct the model to choose only exact matches. Post-filter the response against that list instead of trusting prose.

The picks are generic

Add playtime, tags, completion state, a time budget and two or three examples of what you want tonight. “Recommend something good” contains too little signal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It misunderstands your library

Remove demos, soundtracks, tools and duplicate entries during ingestion. Confirm that AppID resolution produced the expected title names.

Privacy expectations are wrong

Document every network call used for account sync, Steam metadata and model downloads. Local inference protects the prompt only if the ingestion and telemetry paths are also understood.

The verdict

For a large backlog, a local model is better than Steam for the narrow job of answering a highly specific question about games you already own. It is not established as a universally superior recommender, and it costs time, storage and setup effort. The strongest case is personalization: explicit constraints, explanations and overlooked titles. If you want zero configuration or broad new-game discovery, Steam remains the simpler default.
