A splatter guard that folds down or clasps shut can be easier to put away than a rigid screen, which matters if cabinet space is why yours stays unused. Folding and clasping designs are available, but the exact guard in this headline—and the author’s personal experience with it—are not established here. The useful takeaway is to compare how each model stores, fits your pan, and works while you cook rather than assuming all screens are alike.
Why storage can decide whether a splatter guard gets used
A screen may be helpful at the stove and still be a nuisance in a cupboard. In a public cooking discussion, one commenter said a skillet splatter screen took up more cabinet space than its occasional use justified. That is an individual comment, not evidence that this is a common complaint, but it captures the practical trade-off: a tool you cannot conveniently store is easy to leave unused.

Some current product listings address storage directly. PADERNO says its guard’s handle and sides fold, Sur La Table describes sides that clasp together, and HexClad calls its screen a compact folding design. Those descriptions establish that collapsible options exist; they do not establish which one occupies the least space. The listings do not provide comparable folded dimensions.

Check pan fit before choosing a folding screen
Nominal diameter is a starting point, not a guarantee of fit. PADERNO lists a 13-inch screen for its frypans up to 12.5 inches; HexClad gives the same maximum pan size for its screen. Sur La Table offers 10- and 12-inch guards, while IKEA’s KLOCKREN is listed as 13 inches. These figures are not interchangeable guarantees across brands: a pan’s rim, shape, or handle arrangement may affect how a screen sits and how easily you can lift it.
#1 Best Overall
- Protects against food splatter while cooking and keeps food warm after cooking
- Cover interior 10.4 inch diameter at lip, measures 9.7 x 2.2 inches inside the lip and with the dip on top and exterior dimension 10.5 inch diameter and 3.1 inches in height. See dimensional drawing for details.
- BPA and Melamine free plastic, top rack dishwasher safe
- Vents in lid prevent steam build up
- Made in the USA
- Check the guard’s stated size and the manufacturer’s fit guidance against your pan.
- Consider whether the handle and rim leave enough room to lift or reposition the screen.
- If you use pans of different sizes, make sure the guard is appropriate for the one you use most often.
Think about access while cooking, not just storage
A screen needs to let you work around the pan. Sur La Table lists venting holes, and the folding designs have moving parts intended to make storage easier; product descriptions alone do not establish how convenient any model is to lift during a particular cooking task. Consider whether you will need to stir, turn food, or add ingredients frequently, and whether the handle can be reached without disturbing the screen.
A screen is also not a lid. HexClad’s product page explains that a grease screen shields against sputtering fat while allowing moisture to escape, unlike a lid that traps it. That is the manufacturer’s explanation of the distinction, not an independent performance test. If your recipe needs covered cooking or retained steam, a splatter screen does not serve the same purpose.

Compare care instructions and use limits
Dishwasher care is listed for all four examples, but their materials differ: PADERNO lists silicone; Sur La Table and HexClad list silicone with stainless steel; IKEA’s KLOCKREN is stainless steel. Follow the specific product’s current care instructions rather than assuming similar-looking screens can be treated identically.
HexClad’s listing specifies stovetop use only, requires the handle to be locked during use, and gives a maximum heat resistance of 480°F. Treat those as product-specific limits, not general ratings for splatter screens. PADERNO displays a one-year limited warranty, while HexClad describes a one-year manufacturer-defect warranty with exclusions; consult each listing for the terms that apply to the product you buy.

How to decide whether the storage trade-off is worth it
- Identify the storage problem. If a rigid guard is awkward in your cupboard, look for a listed folding or clasping mechanism.
- Match the guard to your pan. Use the product’s stated fit guidance and check the pan’s rim and handle clearance.
- Check cooking access. Decide whether you can lift and reposition the guard easily for the way you cook.
- Read the care and use limits. Confirm dishwasher instructions, allowed use, handle requirements, and any temperature guidance for that particular model.
- Choose based on the storage shape you need. Product pages describe folding or clasping mechanisms, but without comparable folded measurements, they cannot tell you which one will fit your drawer best.
Customer reviews can add individual perspectives, but they are not controlled comparisons. PADERNO’s listing, for example, displays both praise for compact storage and complaints about weight or dishwasher spotting. Those comments may help surface considerations to investigate, but they do not establish how the guard will perform for every user.
