What’s actually slowing this PC down?

I stopped my smart TV from buffering without paying for a faster internet plan by isolating the fault first. The fix turned out to be local: a power-cycle, better Wi‑Fi placement, and a wired test showed whether the problem was the TV, one app, or my home network.
First, identify what is actually slow
Before changing settings, reproduce the problem and note which symptom you see. Slow menus point to the TV or its software; a spinning buffer during playback points more often to the connection or streaming app.

- Play the same title for several minutes in the affected app.
- Repeat the test in a second streaming app.
- Open the TV’s network-status or connection-test screen, if available, and record the result.
- Note whether every app fails, only one app fails, or playback improves at certain times of day.
Netflix says slow loading or repeated rebuffering can result from a weak or unstable connection or a device that needs an update. A second app is a useful control: if only one service fails, treat that app as the primary suspect rather than upgrading your internet plan.
Use speed numbers as a check, not a verdict
Roku publishes these typical minimums for its players and TVs: 3 Mbps for standard definition, 5 Mbps for high definition, and at least 25 Mbps for 4K Ultra HD (Roku, 2026). These are reference points, not a guarantee that every TV or app will stream smoothly. Other devices can consume bandwidth, and individual services may set different minimums.

| Reference stream | Roku typical figure | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| SD | 3 Mbps | Basic reference for standard-definition playback |
| HD | 5 Mbps | Reference for high-definition playback |
| 4K Ultra HD | 25 Mbps or more | Reference for 4K playback; congestion can still cause buffering |
A speed test on a phone beside the TV can be misleading because the phone’s Wi‑Fi hardware and location differ. The TV’s own network test, followed by an Ethernet comparison, gives a more useful diagnosis.
Power-cycle the TV, modem, and router
A complete restart clears temporary software and network-state problems. Follow the devices’ timing rather than simply toggling a remote-control button.
- Turn off the TV or streaming device.
- Unplug it from power. Press its physical power button once, then wait one minute; alternatively, leave it unplugged for three minutes.
- Plug it back in and retry playback.
- If the problem remains, unplug the modem and router for 30 seconds.
- Reconnect the modem and router, wait until their indicator lights settle, then test the TV again.
Do not factory-reset the TV at this stage. A restart is reversible and has high diagnostic value; a reset erases accounts, app data, and customized settings.

Improve the Wi‑Fi path before buying hardware
Reduce distance and obstructions
Move the router closer to the TV if practical and remove dense furniture, cabinets, and other obstructions. Do not enclose the router, and avoid placing a streaming stick tightly behind the TV. An HDMI extender can help only when a stick’s position behind the television is blocking its wireless signal.
Pause competing traffic
Temporarily stop large downloads, cloud backups, game updates, and other high-bandwidth streams. If playback becomes stable, the issue is local congestion rather than an inadequate internet plan.
Try the other Wi‑Fi band
If the router offers both bands, test the TV on 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz separately. The 5 GHz band can provide higher throughput at short range; 2.4 GHz generally travels farther and can work better through walls. Keep the band that is stable at the TV’s actual location.

The internet wifi repeater can also function as a wireless adapter to connect wired devices such as Blu-ray player, game console or smart TV. Enjoy a smooth, lag-free network.
Test Ethernet—the clearest no-upgrade check
Ethernet is generally more stable than Wi‑Fi. If the TV has a LAN port, connect one end of an Ethernet cable to the TV (or its One Connect Box) and the other to a router or modem, then select the wired connection in the TV’s network settings. Roku specifically recommends a wired connection when an Ethernet port is available, and Samsung documents this LAN-port/One Connect connection method.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsInterpret the result this way:
- Ethernet fixes playback: concentrate on Wi‑Fi placement, congestion, band or channel selection, or an aging router.
- Ethernet changes nothing: continue with app and TV software checks; the fault may not be wireless.
- The TV has no LAN port: use the band and placement tests, or test a supported external player later.
Repair a single failing app before resetting the TV
When one service buffers while others play normally, use the app-specific sequence recommended by the TV maker.
- Cold-boot the TV using the power-cycle procedure above.
- Install any available TV software or firmware update.
- Update the affected app.
- Delete and reinstall only that app, then sign in again.
- If it still fails, reset Smart Hub (on supported Samsung TVs) as a later step, understanding that this can remove app accounts and settings.
LG provides a network-status screen and likewise recommends updating or reinstalling a specific failing app before broader troubleshooting. A single-app failure is not evidence that your whole internet connection needs a faster tier.

Run the hotspot split test
A phone hotspot separates the TV from your home router. Enable the hotspot, connect the TV to it, and try the same app and title.
- Works on the hotspot: LG states that the TV is working normally; investigate the Wi‑Fi router or internet service.
- Fails on the hotspot too: the TV or its app may need inspection, especially if multiple apps fail.
Use the hotspot briefly for diagnosis. Mobile data limits, signal strength, and carrier congestion make it unsuitable as a permanent replacement test without checking your plan.

Only consider new hardware after the tests identify a persistent local limitation. Roku notes that routers older than five years may lack the range or speed needed for current streaming, and that newer dual-band or mesh systems can help ongoing coverage problems. This improves the connection inside your home; it does not increase the speed purchased from your internet provider.
| Fix | Typical cost | Diagnostic value | Stability | Reversibility |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Restart devices | Free | Shows whether a temporary state caused the fault | Temporary | Fully reversible |
| Move router/TV; pause traffic | Free | Identifies obstruction or congestion | Can be high if placement is the cause | Fully reversible |
| Change Wi‑Fi band | Free | Identifies range or interference differences | Varies by location | Fully reversible |
| Ethernet cable | Low one-time cost | Separates Wi‑Fi faults from TV/app faults | Usually higher than Wi‑Fi | Unplug to undo |
| Router or mesh upgrade | Hardware purchase | Addresses persistent coverage or capacity limits | Potentially higher throughout the home | Replaceable, but requires setup |
| External streaming player | Hardware purchase | Tests whether the TV’s built-in software is the bottleneck | Depends on its network connection | Can be removed without resetting the TV |
Escalate only after the local tests
Contact the TV maker when multiple apps fail on both your home Wi‑Fi and a hotspot, or when a wired connection also fails. If Ethernet works but Wi‑Fi does not, report that specific result and focus support on placement, interference, channel selection, or router age. Keeping a record of which apps failed, the connection type, and the restart or update steps already completed makes support faster.
