What the proposed GTA 6 “takeover” actually involves
“Takeover” is headline shorthand, not a transfer of public property or control. The reported proposal would let Rockstar brand county facilities and spaces as Vice City, the fictional setting associated with Grand Theft Auto VI. The county would retain ownership and operation of those facilities.

According to The Miamian’s earlier reporting, a pitch deck submitted to Rockstar on June 29 and obtained through a public-records request outlined ideas involving Miami International Airport, PortMiami, Metrorail stations, Tropical Park, other county buildings, and public rights-of-way. GTA BOOM’s October 12 account of the commissioners’ discussion focused on the airport, PortMiami, and Metromover stations. The two reports describe related proposals, but their lists of locations are not identical. The Miamian’s reporting and GTA BOOM’s October 12 report provide the account of the proposal and meeting.
Why commissioners objected
GTA BOOM reported that Commissioner Rene Garcia objected to the county working with a game he said depicts Miami as a crime haven and murder capital. He was quoted as saying, “I feel really uncomfortable with this whole thing.” His description is a criticism attributed to him, not an objective characterization of the game.

Commissioner Danielle Cohen Higgins reportedly pointed to county policy concerning advertising that promotes pornography, prostitution, or violence, and recalled a prior rejection of naming rights. The report supplies her recollection, but a separate primary policy document was not available to confirm the policy’s exact language or how it would apply to this proposal.
What was pending as of October 13
GTA BOOM reported that the county commission was expected to vote on October 20, 2026, on whether the mayor’s staff could continue negotiating or the county would withdraw. That date was still in the future on October 13. The available reporting does not establish that the commission ultimately voted, approved the branding, or rejected it.

The report said a broader county deal could be worth more than $1 million, an amount that would trigger a commission vote. That is a figure attributed to the reporting, not a confirmed final contract value.

These are the statuses reported on October 12, not a guarantee that each activation remained unchanged after that date. GTA BOOM reported the Kaseya Center sign at $975,000. Garcia was also reported to have cited at least $150 million in Rockstar marketing spending, but GTA BOOM said Rockstar and Take-Two had not confirmed that figure. It should be treated as Garcia’s claim, not as a verified company budget.

Why the distinction matters
Miami’s wider Vice City campaign does not settle the county’s decision. A city banner, private venue sign, or scheduled event can proceed under a different owner’s approval than branding at county-controlled transportation and public facilities. The controversy is therefore about whether county government should allow a proposed commercial promotion on its own properties—not whether Miami as a whole has agreed to a single campaign.
