I Easily Switched from ChatGPT to Gemini—But Going Back Is a Nightmare

Moving ChatGPT conversations and context into Gemini has a dedicated import flow. Going back is less complete: OpenAI’s documented method lets ChatGPT refer to an uploaded export in a new conversation, but does not rebuild your old chats in the sidebar. That difference explains why the switch can feel easy in one direction and frustrating in the other—though “nightmare” is a personal reaction, not a universal result.

Why switching feels different in each direction

Google documents two ways to bring information from another AI platform into Gemini: import a chat-history ZIP, and separately import remembered preferences or context. OpenAI’s documented route for bringing exported conversations back into ChatGPT is narrower: upload the export to a new conversation so it can be used as reference. OpenAI says this does not recreate the old conversations as individual chats.

In other words, the two workflows do not produce equivalent results. Gemini’s import is designed to bring chats into Gemini, while ChatGPT’s documented upload method gives a new conversation access to an export without restoring the original chat list. Google Group Product Manager Maryam Sanglaji described Gemini’s feature in a March 26, 2026 announcement: “You can now import your AI memories and chat history into Gemini.” That is Google’s description of the feature, not a guarantee that every detail transfers perfectly.

Move ChatGPT chats and context into Gemini

Import the ChatGPT chat archive

  1. In ChatGPT, open Settings > Data controls > Export data and confirm the export. OpenAI says the ZIP includes chat history and other account data. You can read its export instructions.

  2. When the ZIP is available, open Gemini on the web and select Settings & help > Import memory to Gemini. Under Import chats, choose Add and select the ZIP file. Google’s Gemini import instructions specify a maximum ZIP size of 5 GB and up to five ZIP uploads per day; processing can take up to a day. These are limits and timing stated on Google’s help page reviewed in 2026, not permanent guarantees.

  3. After processing, use the imported history in Gemini. Google says the imported chats can be continued there, but its instructions do not provide a field-by-field guarantee for attachments, generated files, formatting, or conversation metadata.

Import remembered preferences separately

A chat archive and personal context are separate imports. In Gemini’s Import memory to Gemini settings, use the memory-import option to copy the prompt Gemini provides. Paste it into the source AI, then copy that AI’s response back into Gemini’s memory-import field. This is for preferences and context; it does not replace uploading the chat-history ZIP.

Check whether Gemini’s import is available to you

Google’s help page reviewed in 2026 says the import feature requires a personal Google Account and an account holder aged 18 or older. It is unavailable for work, school, and supervised accounts, and Google lists the EEA, Switzerland, and UK as regions where the feature is not available. Google announced the consumer-account rollout on March 26, 2026; availability can change, so check the current eligibility details if the setting is missing.

What happens when you move back to ChatGPT

OpenAI’s documented transfer process is to upload an exported conversation file to a new ChatGPT conversation and use it as reference. It can make information from the export available to that conversation, but it is not a full account migration. OpenAI explicitly says it does not merge accounts or recreate each exported conversation as its own chat in the sidebar. The instructions also exclude subscriptions, workspace membership, custom instructions, memories, GPTs, files, and other settings from this transfer. See OpenAI’s conversation-transfer guidance.

Eligibility also differs by account type. OpenAI documents the export route for personal ChatGPT accounts. Edu exports depend on an administrator enabling export, while Business and Enterprise workspaces cannot self-serve an export through ChatGPT settings, according to the same guidance.

What to save or verify before switching

A chat archive should not be treated as a complete copy of everything associated with an AI account. Before leaving either service, make a separate checklist for anything the documented import or export does not promise to preserve.

The practical takeaway

ChatGPT-to-Gemini has documented paths for importing both a chat archive and remembered context. The reverse route documented by OpenAI is useful for consulting an export, but it does not restore the old ChatGPT conversation list or transfer account features. If returning to ChatGPT means picking up each old thread exactly where it lived, plan for manual organization rather than expecting the uploaded archive to rebuild your account.
