A compact VZmore AX9 Max Mini PC completed a real local coding job in a September 2026 review by Jack Wallen, published on Yahoo Tech as a ZDNET article. Running the qwen3-coder:30b model through Ollama, the machine generated roughly 1,500 lines of code for a costume-measurement web app, and Wallen says it stayed usable while doing so. The app still needed database fixes before it worked. Treat this as one reviewer’s account of one setup. It is not a benchmark, and the details below show where its conclusions stop.
What the reviewer ran
Wallen replaced the preinstalled Windows installation with Fedora Linux, then set up a local model stack. The sequence he describes is:

- Install Fedora Linux on the mini PC in place of the factory Windows OS.
- Install the Moose front end.
- Use Moose to install Ollama, the local model runtime.
- Download
qwen3-coder:30b, a 30-billion-parameter coding model. In Ollama this is fetched withollama pull qwen3-coder:30b. - Prompt the model to build a web app for entering theatrical costume measurements, storing them in a database, and letting users sign in.
The model produced about 1,500 lines of code in that one task. The article does not report how long generation took, the tokens per second, or whether the run was repeated. The database commands in the generated code had to be corrected by hand before the app functioned, so the output was a usable starting point rather than a finished product.
Using the mini PC as a model server on your network
Wallen also configured Ollama so that other machines on his local network could send requests to the mini PC. Over the LAN the model felt slower than running it directly on the mini PC, but he judged it faster than the same remote arrangement on his System76 desktop. That comparison is subjective. No latency or throughput figures are given.

From multiple peripherals to high-resolution displays, everything you need stays within easy reach.
Ollama’s server listens only on the local machine by default. Opening it to other devices means changing its bind address, which the article does not describe in detail. Anyone who does this should restrict access with a firewall or keep the server on a trusted network, because an exposed model server has no login of its own.
Hardware as the article describes it
The figures below are the ones the article reports for the reviewed configuration. None were independently measured, and the article did not measure the TOPS figures during the coding task.

What the test does and does not establish
- It does show that one reviewer completed a multi-hundred-line coding task on a compact machine with a local model and reported the system remained usable.
- It does not show generation speed, consistency across repeated runs, or how the machine compares with other mini PCs or desktops under the same conditions.
- It does not confirm the peak NPU and system AI TOPS figures. The author links the experience partly to the processor’s NPU and AMD XDNA 2 architecture, but the article offers no measurement that isolates that effect.
- It does not show that the generated code was correct. The database commands needed fixing, and the article presents that as part of the workflow.
- It does not establish that the machine will run every local model. Results depend on model size and configuration.
What to verify before buying
- The exact configuration offered by the seller, including memory, storage, and whether the price includes Windows or any other OS.
- Current price and stock, since $1,499 is the figure from the article’s September 2026 publication.
- Whether the memory and storage expansion limits apply to the model you buy. If you plan upgrades, check the DDR5 SO-DIMM and M.2 PCIe 4.0 specifications against the manufacturer’s documentation before buying parts.
- Whether the model sizes you need fit in the installed memory. A 30-billion-parameter model was the case tested here; the article does not give a memory requirement for it.
- Fedora, Ollama, and Moose compatibility with the hardware, since the reviewer’s results came from that specific OS and tool combination.
The original article is at Yahoo Tech’s copy of Jack Wallen’s review. Wallen wrote, after the test: “I was wrong. Very wrong.”

The Bottom Line
The VZmore AX9 Max Mini PC was credible enough in one reviewer’s hands to run a 30-billion-parameter coding model and produce a substantial first draft of an app. Whether it fits your work depends on the model sizes you need, the configuration you can buy at today’s price, and how much generation speed matters to you. Confirm those points before treating this review as a reason to buy.
