If you don’t trust Google’s AI Overviews, you can steer them with a more specific query, ask follow-up questions, name preferred sources, or challenge a claim. None of those steps proves an answer is accurate. To bypass an Overview on a results page, select Google’s Web filter for text-based links; Google says there is no general switch to turn AI Overviews off.
1. Make the search query specific
A short keyword query leaves more room for interpretation. Describe what you actually want to know, including relevant context, instead of relying on a few broad terms. For example, a question about a movie’s cast can specify the character or scene you mean.

More detail can help shape the response, but it does not verify the Overview’s claims. Check important details against the linked sources.

Google’s interface may let you select Show More beneath an Overview and continue into AI Mode. A follow-up can clarify what you mean—for example, correcting which actor you’re asking about. The available controls and workflow can change, so this describes the interface reported at publication time, not a guaranteed path for every user.

A follow-up is still an AI-generated response. Treat it as another answer to check, not independent confirmation.
3. Put your constraints in the first query
If the answer depends on your circumstances, state them up front. A question about whether a graphics card is “worth it” may be more useful if it also gives your budget and the performance you want. That context can lead to a different response, but a changed answer is not necessarily a more accurate one.

4. Name a source or set Preferred Sources
Name a source in the query
If you want a particular publication considered, include its name in your search. In an example reported by Ruben Circelli, adding “PCMag” changed the sources shown in the Overview. That illustrates a way to signal a preference; it does not guarantee that the Overview will rely on that source or that its answer will be correct.

Use Google’s Preferred Sources setting
Google’s Preferred Sources feature lets you select publications to highlight more often in AI Overviews and AI Mode. To set it up, open Search personalization, choose Source preferences, and select sources. This is a prominence preference, not an exclusive-source setting: Google does not promise that every Overview will use only your selections. Google also says sources that are not updated regularly may not be available. Google’s Preferred Sources help page explains the feature.

5. Challenge a claim you doubt
Ask a focused follow-up about the specific detail that concerns you, or run a new search for that claim. A different answer may expose a discrepancy, but it does not settle which answer is right. Open and assess the cited material directly, especially before relying on a consequential price, specification, health, legal, or financial claim.
Google accepts feedback on an Overview through the thumbs-up or thumbs-down controls; you can report a problem and add details. Google Search Help cautions: “Generative AI is experimental and can make mistakes.” Google’s AI Overviews help page describes the feature and feedback options.
6. Ask for a format that is easier to inspect
Terms such as “table” or “short answer” in your query can signal how you want information presented. You can also ask for a graph in a follow-up. These are requests, not guarantees: Search may not return the requested layout, and a neatly formatted answer is no more trustworthy just because it is easier to scan.

Google says AI Overviews are a core Search feature and cannot be turned off globally. After searching, select the Web filter to see a text-based results view without features such as AI Overviews. Depending on the interface, Web may appear under More. Google documents this option in its AI Overviews help and Search Community guide.

In practice, the choice is between steering an Overview and bypassing it for that results view. For a claim that matters, use the Overview as a starting point and check the underlying sources rather than treating a more specific prompt, preferred publication, follow-up, or requested format as proof.
