Whether that trade is right for you depends on the console’s video output, the CRT’s inputs, and the kind of image you prefer. In my setup, the switch made the whole experience feel more cohesive—but the useful lesson is to check compatibility before buying.
Why the CRT made the setup feel right
A modern display can be convenient for current devices yet awkward with older consoles. Compatibility varies: a flat-screen may not accept a console’s original signal or timing, so getting a picture can involve extra signal processing or conversion. A consumer CRT can be a more direct match for some older systems, avoiding that extra layer.

That does not make CRTs universally better. The appeal is partly the image and partly the simpler signal path. RetroRGB distinguishes consumer CRTs from RGB monitors, which can provide a sharper picture; which looks better is a matter of preference and the particular screen and connection. RetroRGB’s display guide also notes that consumer CRT inputs vary by region and model, while finding a modern flat-screen with both low latency and broad older-console compatibility can be challenging.
Check the console and TV before you buy
Start with the console’s video output, then compare it with the inputs on the exact CRT you are considering. The word “CRT” alone does not tell you which cable will work. RGB SCART was common on European CRTs; in other regions, consumer sets may more often offer S-Video or component, but availability depends on the individual television. RetroRGB’s guide to displays describes these regional and model differences.

- Console: Confirm which video signals it can output and which cable or adapter that requires.
- CRT: Check the actual input sockets and, if available, the TV’s manual or model specifications.
- Connection path: Make sure the console signal can reach the TV’s input without an incompatible conversion in between.
RGB is not just a cable choice: the console, cable, display, and connection path all need to support a compatible signal. For guidance on how to display RGB on a TV, see RetroRGB’s RGB guide. If you want to skip upscaling and custom adapters, a consumer CRT that directly accepts the console’s output may be the simpler route.
RGB to component, or S-Video?
An input mismatch does not always mean you need a different television. If your console setup outputs RGB and the CRT has component inputs, an RGB-to-component transcoder is one possible bridge. RetroRGB recommends considering this conversion and names the RetroTINK RGB2Comp as an example; confirm that the specific console cable and transcoder support your signal before choosing one. RetroRGB’s converter guide discusses the available conversion paths.

S-Video can be a less complex, lower-cost alternative when both the console and TV support it. On a basic consumer CRT, the visible difference between S-Video and RGB or component may not be large, so the more elaborate connection is not automatically worth the extra equipment. Choose based on the inputs you actually have and the picture you want.
A CRT monitor is not the same as a CRT television
A VGA computer monitor may look like a CRT, but that does not mean it can accept a classic console’s signal. RetroRGB says nearly every VGA monitor will reject 15 kHz 240p or 480i directly. Conversion or line-doubling can provide a route to a compatible signal, but it adds equipment and has compatibility limits; light-gun games and some accessories built for 15 kHz may not work through those conversions. Check the monitor’s scan-rate compatibility before planning a console setup around it. RetroRGB’s converter guide explains these trade-offs.

What to check when buying a used CRT
Used CRT availability, condition, and price vary locally, so there is no dependable universal model or price recommendation here. Make signal and input specifications part of the decision rather than assuming any CRT will suit any console. OmaCRT’s “What to buy” advice is for its documented PC-to-CRT setup, not a universal console guide, but its emphasis on checking signal and input specifications is useful when assessing a particular set: OmaCRT’s buying guide.
- Write down the console’s output options before viewing televisions.
- Verify that the CRT has a compatible input, or identify the specific converter needed.
- Decide whether a direct consumer-TV connection matters more to you than the sharper image associated with an RGB monitor.
- Check the particular set’s condition and specifications; a familiar connector label alone does not establish full compatibility.
Keep CRT modifications out of the casual setup plan
If a television lacks the input you want, do not treat an internal modification as a simple DIY workaround. RetroRGB warns that “modifying a CRT has the potential to cause injury and death.” Its warning is explicit: CRT RGB modification is specialist work, not a routine step in setting up a retro console. RetroRGB’s guide to CRT RGB modification states the risk.
