Valor Mortis makes a first-person Soulslike sound less like a novelty and more like a deliberate design challenge: keep stamina, parries and enemy-reading central, while asking players to fight without a third-person view of the battlefield. Its announced mix of melee, firearms, supernatural abilities and traversal tools gives that idea a convincing shape. But as of October 5, 2026, the game is still unreleased, so the strongest honest verdict is about why its design changed my expectations—not proof that the finished combat succeeds.
Why a first-person Soulslike seemed like a mismatch
Soulslike combat depends on reading threats, choosing when to commit, and managing stamina while an opponent attacks. A third-person camera makes it easier to see the player character’s position and watch enemies around them. In first person, that broader awareness can be harder to maintain, and close-range animation cues may be less obvious.

That is the tension Valor Mortis has to solve. One More Level—the studio behind Ghostrunner—sets the game in a supernatural, plague-ravaged version of 19th-century Europe and casts the player as William Dowsett, a resurrected soldier in Napoleon’s Grande Armée. The premise supplies an unusual arsenal, but the perspective only works if the combat gives players clear, useful decisions to make. Unreal Engine’s February 3, 2026 developer interview and the publisher’s game announcements describe the intended systems; neither establishes how readable or satisfying they feel in practice.

How Valor Mortis is designed to make first-person combat work
Stamina and timing, not just fast attacks
The publisher describes combat built around stamina, parries, dodges and counterattacks. That framework matters because it gives each encounter a rhythm: observe, decide whether to defend or evade, then take an opening. High mobility is also part of the design, but it is meant to sit alongside deliberate combat rather than replace it.

Different weapons create different kinds of decisions
The September gameplay overview identifies the Claymore as a slow, high-impact two-handed blade and the Musket as a two-handed ranged firearm. The publisher says choosing weapons to suit enemies rewards considered fighting. In principle, that variety can help a first-person view feel intentional: the player is not simply repeating the same close-range exchange, but weighing when to use reach, force or distance.
Transmutations add a second layer
William’s left-hand Transmutations are presented as both combat options and movement tools:
Rank #2
- Item is intended for adults, over the age of 18. This is not a child’s toy.
- Solitaire Play
- 22 x34 Map
- 300+ Counters
- Unit Size: 1 Plane
- Fire burns enemies.
- Shield absorbs damage and releases a shockwave.
- Grapple pulls William to designated points in the environment.
These abilities could broaden the player’s options when a straightforward attack is risky, while Grapple can connect combat with navigation. That is a design rationale, not a claim that the abilities are balanced or that every encounter uses them well.
Exploration and progression support the combat idea
The publisher describes interconnected, Metroidvania-style areas with environmental secrets. Grapple points provide a stated movement mechanic, while exploration can also uncover Ambers. Together, those features suggest a world in which looking beyond the next enemy matters as much as winning the immediate fight. The publisher’s gameplay announcements outline these systems, but do not establish the size or quality of the finished areas.
Progression is tied to Lanterns. Catalysts are dropped where William dies and can be spent at Lanterns to improve attributes such as health, stamina and parry. Ambers found during exploration can also be equipped there to personalize a build. That gives the game a familiar risk-and-recovery loop while leaving room for players to shape how they approach encounters. The announced mechanics alone do not tell us how forgiving losses are, how much build variety exists, or whether upgrades are well balanced.
The setting gives the familiar formula a different frame
Valor Mortis places its action in an alternate history where plague follows Napoleon’s eastward campaign. William hears Napoleon’s voice, and the story introduces rebel leader the Shrike, fellow soldier James Stewart and Polish craftsman Lucjan Skawiński. In an August announcement, the publisher framed William’s path around whether he trusts survivors and remains loyal to the Emperor or follows the Shrike. That announcement describes the premise and choice; it does not establish how much those choices change the story.
Rank #4
The setting also explains the combination of period weapons and supernatural powers: the game is not aiming for historical realism, but for a plague-horror interpretation of Napoleonic Europe. Steam’s developer content notice says, “Gameplay is focused around combat in a brutal wartorn landscape. Players are exposed to violence throughout the game.” That is a content notice, not an independent assessment of the game’s tone or intensity. Steam listing

Release date, platforms and announced editions
As of October 5, 2026, the publisher’s latest announcement schedules Valor Mortis for October 13, 2026 on PS5, Xbox Series S|X and Steam, with day-one availability on Xbox Game Pass. The same September 30 announcement lists the following standard and Deluxe Edition prices:
Best Value
| Edition | USD | EUR | PLN | Announced contents |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | $39.99 | €39.99 | 149.99 zł | Not stated in the publisher’s September 30, 2026 announcement. |
| Deluxe | $59.99 | €59.99 | 199.99 zł | A major story DLC planned for the following year and several cosmetic packs. |
These are publisher-announced prices and plans, not a guarantee of current storefront terms; check the relevant store for availability and final pricing. The publisher’s September 30 release announcement supersedes its earlier June 7 announcement, which had listed September 24 as the release date. That June post also said a Steam demo was available at the time; its present availability is not established here. June 7 announcement
What “proved me wrong” can—and cannot—mean before launch
The idea changed my mind because the announced design answers the first-person objection with concrete tools: stamina and defensive timing make combat deliberate; melee and ranged weapons introduce different choices; Transmutations add combat and movement options; and interconnected exploration gives those abilities a purpose beyond a single duel.
That is a reason to take the concept seriously, not a post-launch review. At the October 5, 2026 evidence cutoff, there are no established post-launch reviews or verified performance tests in the available material. The publisher’s previews explain what Valor Mortis is trying to do, but they cannot prove whether enemy cues are readable, encounters are fair, or the systems remain compelling over a full playthrough. The firmest pre-release conclusion is that first-person Soulslike combat is plausible when the game gives the perspective enough tactical variety—not that Valor Mortis has already demonstrated a finished success.
