Deleting every account is a different decision. Removing the apps can interrupt automatic checking; deactivating can hide an account temporarily; permanent deletion can erase archives, break sign-ins and reduce access to people, groups or work. The sensible choice depends on what you want to stop and what you still need.
What “deleted all my accounts” actually means
These actions are not interchangeable:
| Action | Reversible? | What happens | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Delete the app | Yes | Your account, posts and contacts remain accessible through a browser or after reinstalling. | Breaking automatic checking |
| Log out | Yes | The account stays active, but access requires a deliberate sign-in. | Adding friction |
| Deactivate | Usually | The profile is generally hidden or disabled while its content is retained. | A temporary break or cooling-off period |
| Permanently delete | No after finalization | The platform starts a deletion process for the account and associated content. Backups, legal retention and other users’ copies can complicate what disappears. | A definitive exit |
Facebook describes deactivation as reversible and permanent deletion as irreversible after its cancellation period: official account-status guidance.

Why someone might leave every platform
People commonly leave because checking has become automatic, notifications fragment attention, public posting creates pressure, or feeds bring comparison, political conflict and unwanted contact. Privacy concerns, advertising, influencer-commercialization and harassment can be equally important. A person may simply want uninterrupted time for family, exercise, reading or creative work.
In a first-person account, BGR’s Joe Wituschek said divisiveness, time-wasting and anxiety outweighed the benefits for him. He deleted Facebook, Instagram, Twitter/X, Threads, TikTok, Snapchat and LinkedIn, while keeping YouTube and Reddit for video and interest-based browsing. That is one person’s experience, not proof that deletion improves well-being for everyone: BGR account.
#1 Best Overall
What may improve after leaving
- Fewer reflexive phone checks and less exposure to recommendation feeds.
- More control over when you communicate and less pressure to perform publicly.
- Fewer public posts, metrics and unwanted interactions.
- A clearer boundary between communication and entertainment.
- More time for offline activities, if you deliberately choose a replacement.
These are possible outcomes, not guaranteed mental-health or productivity effects. If the same habit moves to news, shopping, email, Reddit or video Shorts, the underlying problem—automatic checking and boredom—has not changed.
What can get worse
- You may miss family announcements, birthdays, local events and weak ties that are difficult to maintain elsewhere.
- Groups, marketplaces, clubs and professional opportunities may be harder to access.
- Photos, videos, posts, comments, messages, saved items and creator records can be lost.
- Business pages, customer conversations, advertising history and audience reach may disappear.
- Deleting a platform used for single sign-on can lock you out of other websites.
- Messages you sent may remain in recipients’ inboxes; deleting your account does not erase every copy. Facebook documents this limitation in its help center: Facebook deletion guidance.
Are YouTube and Reddit still social media?
There is no single objective boundary. YouTube and Reddit have profiles, subscriptions, comments, recommendations and communities, even if you use them mainly for video or interest-based discussion. Test the behavior rather than the label: if a service causes the same compulsive checking, comparison or outrage that prompted your break, include it in the experiment.
Before deleting anything
1. Inventory every account and dependency
List Facebook profiles and pages, Instagram, X/Twitter, Threads, TikTok, Snapchat, LinkedIn, Reddit, YouTube or Google-linked channels, Pinterest, Discord communities, messaging services, creator or business accounts and every app or website using a social login.

Save photos, videos, posts, captions, important direct messages, contacts, usernames, group lists, subscriptions, receipts, invoices, creator records and two-factor recovery codes. Meta advises exporting information before deleting Facebook or Instagram because export tools may no longer be available afterward: Facebook information export and deletion and Instagram information export.

3. Replace third-party sign-ins
- Open each connected app or website.
- Add an email address and a unique password, or another supported authentication method.
- Enable two-factor authentication and save new recovery codes.
- Test the replacement login in a private browser window.
- Only then delete the social account.
Facebook warns that deleting an account can disable Facebook Login on connected services and affect Meta Quest data, purchases and achievements: Facebook account-deletion consequences.
4. Move important relationships
Tell people who genuinely need to reach you whether to use your phone, email, Signal, a personal website or a professional contact method. You do not need a public goodbye post to leave.
5. Preserve evidence if safety is involved
For harassment, stalking or threats, save screenshots, URLs, dates, usernames and report records before deleting anything. Contact the platform, trusted people and appropriate authorities when necessary.

It says full deletion may take up to 90 days, with some backup or legally retained data lasting longer. Additional profiles may be affected, Messenger access ends, and Meta Quest information can be deleted when it depends on the Facebook account. Menu labels can differ by app version, region and account type, so use the current official help page if an option is missing: Facebook Help.

Instagram says to export information first. Its help guidance states that the account and information are permanently deleted after 30 days, subject to regional variation, and that the process may take up to 90 days: Instagram Help. For X, TikTok, Snapchat, LinkedIn, Reddit and YouTube, use each service’s current official account-management or privacy center rather than relying on an old menu path; controls change and creator, business, advertising and messaging products may be separate.
Choose the least destructive option that solves the problem
Choose permanent deletion when
- The account has no remaining personal, professional or community value.
- You have exported needed data and replaced every dependent login.
- You have alternative ways to contact important people.
- You accept losing posts, followers, groups, messages and reach.
Choose deactivation when
- You want to disappear temporarily or are unsure.
- You may need memories, Messenger, Facebook Login or linked services.
- You want a reversible cooling-off period.
Choose app removal or restrictions when
- The account is needed for work, events or groups.
- The problem is compulsive checking rather than the account itself.
- You want to keep archives and contacts while making access deliberately inconvenient.
Keep a minimal presence when necessary
A creator, freelancer, small business, journalist, organizer or job seeker may be harmed by total deletion. Consider retaining a professional profile or business page, delegating management, separating public work from private accounts, or replacing feed activity with a website and email newsletter.
A reversible seven-day or 30-day test
- Export important data and record account dependencies.
- Disable notifications and remove the apps for seven days.
- Tell close contacts how to reach you.
- Write down what you miss, what improves and where your checking habit moves.
- Extend the test to 30 days if it helps.
- Choose selective return, deactivation or permanent deletion based on those observations.
Use direct text, email, phone calls, private group chats, newsletters, RSS, forums, offline clubs or a personal website as replacements. None is automatically healthier; judge each by whether it serves a clear purpose without recreating the same compulsive loop.
