Changing DNS on a Fire TV Stick changes which service looks up internet addresses for it. It does not add shows to a streaming catalog, change your subscription, or increase the speed in your internet plan. What may be “better” is a different resolver’s behavior—such as its filtering or privacy policies—or a connection that works more reliably in a particular setup. The sources available here do not verify a specific viewing or performance improvement, so that result should not be treated as universal.
What changing DNS on a Fire TV Stick does
When an app needs to connect to a domain, DNS translates that domain name into an IP address the network can reach. Cloudflare describes the role this way: “Nearly everything on the Internet starts with a DNS request.” That is Cloudflare’s explanation of DNS, not a measurement of Fire TV performance.

Changing the configured resolver changes which provider handles those lookups and which provider policies may apply. It does not change the Stick’s hardware or raise the connection speed in the plan you buy from your internet provider; a September 21, 2026 report by Cinco Días makes that distinction.

Why a different resolver is not the same as more content
DNS helps an app find a server. It is not a catalog of films or shows, and changing resolvers does not, by itself, change a service’s licensing, your account’s eligibility, its location rules, or the catalog available to you. The sources do not establish that a public DNS resolver unlocks streaming libraries.

If access to a service changed after a DNS edit, that is an observation about that specific setup—not proof that DNS generally adds content. App behavior, network conditions, service configuration, and the resolver’s policies are separate factors; without details about the device, network, provider, and service, the cause cannot be established.
What might feel better after a DNS change
A resolver’s filtering policy
Resolvers can apply different domain-filtering policies. Cloudflare’s standard 1.1.1.1 resolver does not filter content. Its 1.1.1.1 for Families options add malware filtering, with an additional option to filter adult content. These are Cloudflare’s specific offerings, not a description of every public DNS service.

Privacy terms and encrypted DNS
Cloudflare says standard DNS queries are typically sent in plaintext and documents support for DNS over HTTPS (DoH) and DNS over TLS (DoT). Typing a resolver’s IP address into a device’s network settings does not, by itself, show that the device is using either encrypted protocol; the client and resolver must support and use it.

How to choose a resolver for a Fire TV setup
Before changing settings, compare the provider’s behavior and check that the chosen configuration is supported by your particular Fire TV setup. Useful questions include:
- Filtering: Does the resolver block malware, adult content, or other domains? Filtering can change which sites or services resolve.
- Encryption: Does the Fire TV device or the network configuration support DoH or DoT with that resolver? A resolver address alone is not evidence of encrypted DNS.
- Privacy: What does the provider say it logs, retains, or shares, and for how long?
- Compatibility: Does the configuration work with your Fire TV Stick model, Fire OS version, and network arrangement?
Cloudflare’s descriptions of its standard resolver and Families options are available in its 1.1.1.1 documentation and Families setup information. Treat provider statements as statements about that provider, and check the current documentation before choosing.

Check the connection before changing settings again
Amazon’s Fire TV Network Status tool can help distinguish a device-to-router issue from a router-to-internet issue. Open Settings > Network and select the connected network or Network Status option shown on your device. Amazon notes that compatible models may also offer a speed test and more detailed network information. Menu labels and available diagnostics can vary by model and software version. If an app still cannot connect, follow that service’s guidance rather than assuming DNS is the cause. Prime Video lists updating DNS settings as one possible connectivity troubleshooting step and directs users to the connected device’s DNS configuration (Prime Video help). Netflix’s guidance for the cited playback error says to restore changed connection settings to their defaults and contact the internet provider for DNS troubleshooting (Netflix help). These are service-specific recommendations, not one universal DNS procedure for every Fire TV Stick.

Why there is no single safe DNS recipe for every Fire TV Stick
Amazon’s setup documentation covers connecting a Fire TV Stick to Wi-Fi and points to network troubleshooting, but the sources do not establish one manual-IP procedure that applies to every model. The right steps depend on the Stick model, Fire OS version, Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection, router setup, and resolver address selected. Amazon’s Fire TV setup instructions are a useful starting point for connection help.
If you cannot identify what was changed, use your device or router’s normal network settings to restore the previous configuration, or follow the service provider’s support instructions. Keep a note of the original settings before making further edits. Avoid copying a procedure written for a different model or network arrangement.
